FRANCE
A grab bag of the collectible and the highly rated, including ageable Rieslings from Alsace, stunning whites from the Loire and breathtaking oerings from Northern Rhône.
BORDEAUXRED WINE
ALTER EGO 2015Second wine of Château Palmer, AC Margaux
TASTING NOTE: This is sensational, characterized by such purity and beauty and with aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate, walnuts, cedar and lavender. Full-bodied, tight and focused – in part thanks to sensational tannin tension that is intense yet polished. Needs five to six years of bottle age to come together. Great second wine of Palmer. Score: 96 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)
474825 (XD) 750 mL $203.00
CHÂTEAU BELLE-VUE 2015AC Haut-Médoc
TASTING NOTE: This is already a balanced wine, rich in tannins, packed with ripe blackberry fruits and with a dense texture. It has weight and richness from the 50% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend and the 20% of Petit Verdot that adds a great structure. Drink from 2025. Cellar Selection. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2018)
198911 (XD) 750 mL $36.00
CHÂTEAU LAROZE 2010AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé(Jean-Pierre Moueix)
TASTING NOTE: Lovely chocolate, hazelnut and berries. Roses too. Ripe and fresh. Full body, with juicy fruit and a lovely berry and currant aftertaste. Tangy acidity. Delicious now but better in 2016. Score: 92 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 16, 2013)
12501 (XD) 750 mL $67.00
CLOS DU MARQUIS 2000AC Saint-Julien
This wine will have taken on a softer texture and mature bouquet and flavours since Suckling’s 2003 review. TASTING NOTE: The nose shows loads of plum, spice and meat aromas, as well as hints of licorice. It’s full-bodied, with firm, yet velvety textured tannins. It’s big and rounded. If you can’t afford Las Cases, try some of this. Some might call this a second wine, but it comes from a plot of vineyards not deemed worthy of Léoville Las Cases. So it’s like its own estate. Best after 2009. Smart Buy. Ranked #14 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2003.Score: 94 (James Suckling, winespectator.com, March 31, 2003)
397331 (XD) 750 mL $173.00
CROIX DE BEAUCAILLOU 2010AC Saint-Julien
TASTING NOTE: I love the aromas of minerals, flowers, blackberries and blueberries. Full body with a fabulous texture of polished and integrated tannins. It goes on for minutes. Spicy, subtle fruit and a long and marvelous finish. Currant bush undertones. A whole and beautiful wine. Drink or hold. Score: 94 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 16, 2013)
11757 (XD) 750 mL $130.00
LA DAME DE MALESCOT 2015Second wine of Château Malescot St-Exupéry, AC Margaux
TASTING NOTE: Ripe blackberry and dark plums with a wealth of violets and raspberries. This has a very plush palate with slick, smooth and ripe tannins that carry raspberry and red-plum flavors. Quite approachable. Try from 2020. Score: 92 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)
303842 (XD) 750 mL $57.00
LE SAINT-ESTÈPHE DE MONTROSE 2015Second wine of Château Montrose, AC Saint-Estèphe
Antonio Galloni described the wines of Bordeaux’s 2015 vintage as “...specta- cularly rich, racy wines loaded with
personality.” While Jancis Robinson, MW, called 2015 “... a vintage worth making a fuss about.” You can expect this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to feature a round, powerful, fleshy character, with great balance and fruit intensity.
12472 (XD) 750 mL $52.00
BURGUNDYCÔTE DE NUITSRED WINE
DOMAINE BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS ECHÉZEAUX GRAND CRU 2017AC
TASTING NOTE: The stunning floral depth to the nose is very attractive here with plenty of roses and violets, as well as ripe red cherries. Very plush, long and layered tannin weave with an expressive, fleshy and round center. There’s softness, as well as a bit of cut from the 50 per cent whole-cluster ferment. Try from 2022. Score: 93-94 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 12, 2019)
703298 (XD) 750 mL $362.00
HENRI DE VILLAMONT CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY FEUSSELOTTES 1ER CRU 2015AC
This wine is sourced from vines over 30 years old. Look for good concentration and poise, with ripe red cherry, earth, and well-integrated and -applied oak. A wine for tonight with boeuf bourguignon, or set it aside and follow its evolution.
383695 (XD) 750 mL $98.00
CÔTE DE BEAUNERED WINE
ALBERT BICHOT DOMAINE DU PAVILLON POMMARD LES RUGIENS 1ER CRU 2017AC
TASTING NOTE: Impressive winemaking from the Albert Bichot team has produced a classic interpretation of this outstanding premier cru. Serious and deeply coloured,

with 50% new wood and 30% whole clusters, it’s firm and sappy, with the concentration to age but nothing in the way of rusticity. Drinking window: 2023-2030. Score: 94 (Tim Atkin, MW, decanter.com, Oct. 31, 2018)

ALBERT MOROT BEAUNE TOUSSAINTS 1ER CRU 2016AC
TASTING NOTE: This round red exhibits cherry, plum, earth, tobacco and iron flavors. The dense structure leaves a grainy feel on the lingering finish. Balanced, if a bit chunky. Best from 2022 through 2033. Score: 91 (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, 2019)
712182 (XD) 750 mL $64.00
ANTOINE OLIVIER LES TEMPS DES C(E)RISES SANTENAY 2017AC
The 2017 Santenay Le Temps de C(e)rises (a French pun on “cerise” (cherry) and “crise” (crisis)) will be characteristically aromatic, with plenty of sweet cherry and strawberry fruit, complex herbs and spices. It will have the structure and tannins to cellar till 2028+.
14553 (XD) 750 mL $44.00
DOMAINE ALBERT MOROT BEAUNE AIGROTS 1ER CRU 2016AC
TASTING NOTE: (the yield here was just 15 hectoliters per hectare): Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Very dark aromas of cassis, blackberry, blueberry, violet and licorice pastille. A step up in sucrosité and texture from the foregoing samples, offering an enticing sappiness to its dark berry and licorice flavors. This concentrated, very juicy wine spreads out on the back end, finishing with rather suave palate-dusting tannins. Geoffroy Choppin de Janvry noted that this wine used to be harder but since he started farming organically in 2009 the tannins have become rounder. Score: 90-92 (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, Jan. 2018)
42416 (XD) 750 mL $67.00
DOMAINE P. DUBREUIL-FONTAINE PÈRE & FILS POMMARD ÉPENOTS 1ER CRU 2017AC(Louis Latour)
TASTING NOTE: This is very dark colored with lots of dried berries, olives and blackberries. Full-bodied, rich and layered. Juicy at the same time. Just before bottling. Needs four to five years to come around. Try after 2023. Score: 93 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 12, 2019)

WHITE WINE
CHARTRON ET TRÉBUCHET MEURSAULT 2017AC
Chartron et Trébuchet was founded in 1984, but the company’s roots in Burgundy run deeper still – Domaine Jean Chartron has owned premier and grand cru sites in Burgundy since 1859. The wines of Meursault are some of the most impressive in Burgundy. These powerful, aromatic, rich Chardonnays, with their notes of nuts, butter, toast, vanilla and mineral, are lush declarations of Burgundy’s mastery of the grape.
226407 (XD) 750 mL $81.00
DOMAINE POTINET-AMPEAU LES PORUZOTS MEURSAULT 1ER CRU 2008AC
Domaine Potinet-Ampeau is now under the stewardship of Vincent Durrieu, who represents the fifth generation of this family to work the domaine. The Les Poruzots site features red-tinged clay soils. This will be a rich, structured wine, with citrus fruit and a pure minerality that hints at flint. You will find that it strikes a fine balance between freshness and weight. Try it with grilled salmon or a creamy chicken dish.
12505 (XD) 750 mL $159.00
DOMAINE SYLVAIN LANGOUREAU SAINT-AUBIN 2018AC
This will be a pretty, rich, round Chardon-nay with impressive apple, citrus and pear tones. Look for a lifted floral note as well. It will have the characteristic steely minerality that Saint-Aubin is known for, as well as good precision and focus through to the close.
538454 (XD) 750 mL $37.00
MAISON SHAPS MEURSAULT 2018AC
Maison Shaps is a small “garage” winery that sources the grapes for this wine from two prime sites in the village of Meursault. The subtle variation in terroir translates to different textures coming together to create the distinct richness of this wine. This will demonstrate the classic minerality of the best Burgundian Chardonnay, with a refined, delicately applied oak. Expect a pure, crisp wine with great ageing potential.
14277 (XD) 750 mL $96.00
PIERRE BRISSET PULIGNY- MONTRACHET LES CHAMPS GAINS 1ER CRU 2016AC
This wine will have bright floral tones artfully underpinned by fresh fruit and minerality. Expect a wine of elegance and provenance that can be enjoyed this evening with veal in a white-wine sauce, or fish terrine with salmon roe and dill. It will continue to evolve, effortlessly rewarding 10-15 years, if not more, in your cellar.
13756 (XD) 750 mL $208.00
REMOISSENET CUVÉE MAURICE CHEVALIER MEURSAULT 2017AC
The wines of Meursault are among the finest examples of Chardonnay in the world, and the Remoissenet Cuvée Maurice Chevalier is always a benchmark expression. This will be a complex, layered Chardonnay with bright acidity and fine minerality framing a rich, full-bodied texture. Look for a powerful, utterly gratifying wine.

CHABLISWHITE WINE
DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE VAILLONS CHABLIS 1ER CRU 2017AC
TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons bursts from the glass with a pretty, aromatic bouquet of citrus blossom, white peach and spring flowers. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample and expressive, with an open-knit, satiny-textured core, tangy acids and a precise, mouthwatering finish. From bottle, this confirms Didier Séguier’s confidence and merits a higher score than I gave it from barrel. Drink date: 2019-2035. Score: 92 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, April 30, 2019)
700369 (XD) 750 mL $63.00
SIMONNET-FEBVRE MONT DE MILIEU CHABLIS 1ER CRU 2017AC
TASTING NOTE: A very light and fresh nose with a cool, stony mineral edge. The palate is super plush and smoothly rendered with bright, fleshy fruit, carrying long and even. Great tension here. Try from 2021. Score: 92 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 12, 2019)
101600 (XD) 750 mL $52.00
MÂCONNAISWHITE WINE
LOUIS JADOT DOMAINE FERRET TÊTE DE CRU CLOS DES PROUGES POUILLY-FUISSÉ 2017AC
TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Pouilly-Fuissé Tête de Cru Clos des Prouges unwinds in the glass with a delicate bouquet of crisp orchard fruits, honeycomb, almond paste and fresh pastry. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and mineral, with a firm, structured core that’s built around a bright girdle of acidity and chalky structuring extract. This is very promising, but it will reward a little bottle age. Drink date: 2022-2035. Score: 92+ (William Kelley, robertparker.com, Aug. 30, 2019)
404632 (XD) 750 mL $70.00
REMOISSENET PÈRE & FILS CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 2017AC
Remoissenet is a producer with a long-standing reputation for crafting some of the greatest white Burgundy. The vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet are the most southerly of the grand cru sites in Burgundy and are renowned for both their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Chardon-nays from Chassagne-Montrachet are notably powerful and offer suggestions of apple, honey and toasted nuts.
433375 (XD) 750 mL $86.00
ROCHE DE BELLENE PULIGNY- MONTRACHET LES FOLATIÈRES 1ER CRU 2015AC
TASTING NOTE: A whiff of petrol can be found on the pretty and ever-so-mildly exotic aromas of both white and yellow orchard fruit that includes hints of wood and white flowers. I like the richness allied with verve and detail of the medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the delicious, vibrant and agreeably dry finale. While this is clearly a child of its vintage, it’s more vibrant than many 2015s and worth a look. Drink: 2022+. Outstanding. Score: 91 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, June 15, 2018)
12507 (XD) 750 mL $145.00
VINCENT GIRARDIN MEURSAULT LES PERRIÈRES 1ER CRU 2015AC
TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru comes across slightly richer on the nose than its peers, offering scents of orange peel, mandarin and light peachy scents, albeit less crushed stone/mineral expression. The fresh, vibrant palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and a tang of blood orange toward the finish. This constitutes an enjoyable Les Perrières but not the most profound expression of the vintage. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Drinking window: 2020-2032. Score: 91 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Nov. 2018)
13404 (XD) 750 mL $187.00
BEAUJOLAISRED WINE
DOMAINE DES SOUCHONS CÔTE DU PY MORGON 2016AC
TASTING NOTE: The volcanic soil of this impressive vineyard gives powerful wines, like this. It is about tannins as much as fruit, but this will change. Wood aging has already done much to smooth the up-front structure and the fruit is developing well. But wait until 2021 for the wine to be at its best. Cellar Selection. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, March 1, 2019)
13396 (XD) 750 mL $44.00
RHÔNENORTHERN RHÔNERED WINE
DAUVERGNE RANVIER VIN RARE SAINT-JOSEPH 2017AC
TASTING NOTE: Looking much better than previous vintages, the 2017 Saint Joseph Vin Rare does show some oak influence in its aromas of baking spices and creamy, lush texture, but it retains sufficient berry fruit and crushed-stone mineralogy to impress. It’s full-bodied, concentrated and complex, with a long, mouthwatering finish. Drink date: 2018-2025. Score: 92 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Dec. 28, 2018)
13394 (XD) 750 mL $41.00
E. GUIGAL LA MOULINE 2015AC Côte-Rôtie
TASTING NOTE: Full-bodied and powerful yet elegant, the 2015 Cote Rotie La Mouline is potentially close to perfect. Espresso, grilled meat, caramelized plum and cassis pick up hints of vanilla and herbal-floral notes on the nearly limitless finish. I can’t wait to try this again next year. Drink date: 2025-2045. Score: 97-99 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Dec. 29, 2017)

CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2016AC(Famille Perrin)
TASTING NOTE: This is a stunning Beaucastel. A classic! Has a superb array of fruit, ranging from red, through to blue, darker purple and black. Nuances of dark, stony minerals, spices, wild flowers and herbs. So fleshy. This has impeccable balance, super-silky tannins and an extraordinarily long finish. This has decades ahead of it. TASTING NOTE: Wild, garrigue herbs and dark berries in a fresh style with violets and dried roses. There’s a savory, tarry, salt-licorice edge in the mouth. Moody wine. Silky, lozenge-like, glossy and polished tannins. Dark fruit and dark chocolate with a kick of bitter herbs. Finishes with impressive freshness and effortless depth. Charming. Drink or hold. XAVIER VIGNON ARCANE LE SOLEIL 2015AP Côtes du Rhône-Villages
TASTING NOTE: Coming from 100-year-old Grenache vines (there’s 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre in the blend) mostly in the northern part of the Southern Rhône, the 2015 Côtes du Rhône Villages Arcane le Soleil saw 15 months in one-third each of new barrels, concrete tanks, and stainless-steel tanks. This inky colored beauty offers a terrific perfume of blueberries, scorched earth, graphite, and crushed violets. Deep, full-bodied, incredibly pure, and elegant, with silky tannin, it’s a sensational Côtes du Rhône that’s better than most Chateauneuf du
LAURUS 2016AC Côtes-Rôtie(Gabriel Meffre)
TASTING NOTE: This négociant has done well with its 2016 Cote Rotie Laurus. While not hugely expressive of the terroir, it’s a sexy, oaky wine, loaded with cedar, vanilla and espresso notes. Medium to full-bodied, it’s velvety on the palate, picking up some meaty notes on the finish. Drink date: 2018-2027. Score: 92 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Oct. 31, 2018)

WHITE WINE
DOMAINE GRANGIER LES TERRASSES CONDRIEU 2018AC
The wines of Condrieu are sourced from steep granite slopes. The vines face south and south-east, allowing them maximum sun exposure. The Viognier crafted here is typically voluptuous and complex. Expect a full-bodied, fresh, pure white wine with layers of citrus and honeyed tones.
14032 (XD) 750 mL $61.00
E. GUIGAL LA DORIANE CONDRIEU 2017AC
TASTING NOTE: Slightly more forward and flamboyant than the more classically structured 2016, the 2017 Condrieu la Doriane is full-bodied, plush and opulent, loaded with flowers, melons and apricots. Yes, the oak is noticeable, but it adds a relatively restrained note of toasted almonds, serving to focus and lift the waves of succulent fruit. I’d drink this silky-textured beauty over the next few years, while it’s still as showy as can be. Drink date: 2018-2023. Score: 96 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Oct. 31, 2018)

PAUL BLANCK SCHLOSSBERG RIESLING 2015AC Alsace Grand Cru
TASTING NOTE: Juicy plum, ripe apple and yellow pear are wrapped in a zesty citrus haze. The palate speaks with the same fruity generosity and exuberance but corrals it with wonderfully bright zesty vivid lemon. Underneath all that is a stony firm precision that anchors all of that lively fruitiness and allows the subtlety of the citrus to surface. The finish is serene, dry, zesty and whistle clean. Drink now through 2038. Score: 95 (Anne Krebiehl, MW, Wine Enthusiast, Nov. 1, 2018)

RENÉ MURÉ CLOS SAINT LANDELIN RIESLING 2015AC Alsace Grand Cru
TASTING NOTE: The heady aromatic scent of fresh tangerine peel takes turns with the refreshing perfume of green Seville oranges. The palate takes these enticing aromas and bundles them into one arrow-like force of concentrated freshness. This is a high-wire act of piercing brightness and layered citrus aroma. This is like a self-generating well of freshness that convinces with its luminosity, raciness and rapier-like purity of citrus flavors. Everything is heightened: Fruit, dryness, freshness and vibrant verve. It is tempting but it would be a shame to drink this now. Keep this genie in its bottle for a while longer, if only to see what fascinating direction it takes. This is wondrous. Drink 2022-2037. Score: 97 (Anne Krebiehl, MW, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 1, 2017)

CHAMPAGNE
ALAIN THIENOT CUVÉE THIENOT CHAMPAGNE 2007AC
TASTING NOTE: Impressive complexity and freshness with brightly spiced peach pastry and some ripe yellow plums. The palate is very crisp, fine and steely with a composed, smooth and very polished palate. Superb completeness. Complex now, but more to come, if you can wait. Tasted again in 2019, this really starts to emerge as elegance and precision, the toasty build of umami at the finish is coming now. Superb! This mature Champagne will continue to offer intrigue and satisfaction through 2020.
TASTING NOTE: For the pleasure of drinking a mature Champagne, this is just right at this moment. Any longer and it will tip over, but through 2019 it is poised between rich fruit and nuts, toast and spice. Drink now. Score: 94 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 1, 2018)

EDOUARD BRUN 1ER CRU BRUT CHAMPAGNE 2008AC
TASTING NOTE: Disgorged in June 2017 with a dosage of six grams per liter, the 2008 Brut Premier Cru Vintage is an assemblage of 50% Grand Cru Chardonnay fermented in cuves and 50% Premier Cru Pinot Noir from Aÿ fermented in 205-liter oak barrels. The wine displays a beautiful yellow-golden color and an impressively evolved bouquet that reveals matured (pretty tropical) fruit flavors intermixed with very fine limestone, spicy/floral and complex brioche/caramel aromas from the long lees aging. Although the overall impression is the maturity, it is
the purity and freshness on the nose that give this Premier Cru its sexiness. Full-bodied, mouthfilling and round but also pure, dry and fresh on the palate, this is a seriously structured, very mineral and persistent cuvée with an intense and expressive finish. This has great finesse and complexity as well as lingering lemon flavors and bitterness. This is another gorgeous 2008. Tasted from lot 1728402 in August 2018. Drink date: 2018-2028. TASTING NOTE: This mouthwatering Champagne shows a lovely sense of finesse, with firm acidity deftly married to a rich profile of crème de cassis, toasted brioche and lime blossom, accented by hints of café au lait, singed orange peel and exotic spice. Long and plush on the finish. Disgorged 2014. Drink now through 2024. Score: 95 (Alison Napjus, winespectator.com, Oct. 31, 2018)

LOIREWHITE WINE
DOMAINE HUËT CUVÉE CONSTANCE VOUVRAY 2015AC
TASTING NOTE: This is stunning from the start, with a silky and refined feel despite the panoply of dried quince, fig, pear and apricot flavors that are exotic in nature. KIR-YIANNI DIAPOROS 2016Yianakohori Vineyard, PGI Imathia
TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Diaporos Block 5 (the new labels just say “single vineyard” not “Block 5”) is mostly Xinomavro, with 13% Syrah blended in. It was aged for 18 months in new French oak and comes in at 13.9% alcohol. After tasting through a bunch of silky and tannic Xinomavros, I came to this blend. Of all the Xinomavro-based wines this issue, this would be my favorite. In its youth, it seems lusher, more expressive and less closed. The wide-open Syrah may have something to do with that, but this Block 5 is pretty special as well. This will have a more approachable feel than a lot of young
Xinomavros (including Kir-Yianni’s), but don’t be confused – there’s power underneath and plenty of aging ability. These are all just relative comments. There’s enough depth this year, not the most ever, perhaps, but enough. Then, it might win extra points for finesse and balance. It is this wine’s expressive fruit, beautiful finesse and long finish that are its most impressive features. You can try it now, if you must, but you’ll just be wasting it if you do. It will become far better with a few years in the cellar. Drink date: 2021-2040. Score: 94 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, April 30, 2019)

TASTING NOTE: Ama’s 2015 L’Apparita is shaping up to be phenomenal. That is the good news. But readers are going to have to give the 2015 at least another 8-10 years before the wine starts to drink well, as today, the flavors are remarkably primary. That is hardly a surprise given how this Tuscan thoroughbred ages. A rush of blackberry jam, spice, menthol, and graphite build into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures. TASTING NOTE: I love the way this wine has absorbed and reflects the sunny and warm personality of its maker, the brilliant Donatella Cinelli Colombini. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne has her spirit and her vision, and I recognize that as I taste through these samples. Her distinctive winemaking mark is achieved with botte and tonneaux aging, and her style is definitely fuller and more generous than most. It’s a modern Brunello, if you care to categorize wines in this way. Only 6,660 bottles were produced. in Chianti. I’m told that berry size was smaller in this vintage, thus resulting in densely concentrated wines that are teeming with flavor and spirit. You most certainly get a sense of that here. This is a forward-moving and determined wine that leaves a lasting mark on the palate. It ages in tonneaux but then moves into cement for one year to complete its tannic and structural integration. After that, it rests in bottle for one more year to shake off any nervous youthfulness. This vintage possesses impressive energy and depth. Drink date: 2019-2035. QUINTA DO CRASTO TOURIGA NACIONAL 2016DOC Douro
TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Touriga Nacional was aged for 16 to 18 months, depending on plot, in 90% new, light-toast French oak. It is sourced from two different vineyards plots, one with southern exposure and the other north-facing, averaging 35 years in vine age. The two plots were fermented separately. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol, a decline from the 2015. Overall, this seems every bit its equal, probably its superior. Tight and aromatic, this throws off big blue-fruit aromas and flavors turning to a bit of blackberry on the end. Bright, silky and very focused, this precise Touriga has superb structure, a certain sexy demeanor despite its elegance and plenty of finesse. When all is said and done, this is likely to be one of Crasto’s finest Tourigas. Maybe the 2015 will overtake it. Maybe not. I’m still a little wary – this 2016 was only in bottle about 90 days when seen and is very unevolved. I’m leaning up for the moment, though, as the combination of elegance and sex appeal makes this seem very special just now. Note that this was double decanted for about six hours before being tasted. It was quite drinkable at that point, and the tannins are moderate, but that’s not how it will show from a newly opened bottle. This will acquire balance and more complexity around 2023 or so. The rest is from Nicasia, a vineyard that Catena planted 22 years ago in Altamira. CONCHA Y TORO DON MELCHOR CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2016Puente Alto, Maipo Valley
TASTING NOTE: The Don Melchor vineyard has 127 hectares and was primarily planted to cabernet sauvignon in the early 1970s. Today the vineyard is 90% cabernet along with smaller percentages of cabernet franc, merlot, and petit verdot. This year those percentages are more or less reflected in the wine. The
blend is 93% cabernet and 3% petite verdot, a variety that is used to support the tannins in a year with greater dilution due to the rain that fell in April. Petit verdot has only been used in 2015, and even then it was just 1%. This new version of Don Melchor – number 30 of this modern classic – has the delicate fruity side of a year that was cold and – it bears clarifying – quite complicated due to the rain and the cooler weather. Under these conditions, the cabernet from Puente Alto shows its herbal side and the red fruits that, in this case, appear over a subtle-yet-firm weft of tannins. For fans of this wine, this is sort of a new version of the 1996, a classic year that is now showing better than ever. Score: 96 (guiadescorchados.cl, 2019)

UNDURRAGA ALTAZOR 2015DO Maipo Valley
TASTING NOTE: This Altazor debuted with the 1999 vintage and initially came from the traditional Santa Ana Vineyards that surround the Undurraga winery in Isla de Maipo. However, after winemaker Rafael Urrejola joined the winery in 2007, he wanted his cabernets to have the Andean stamp of Maipo Alto – cabernets that are much finer, more herbal, and fresher than those grown in Santa Ana. This wine offers extremely delicate tannins, fresh fruit, and herbs and spices in a light-to-medium-bodied wine with sharp, vertical, linear acidity. The finish has an herbal touch and an earthy detail that gives it even more complexity. An archetypal Maipo Alto wine. Score: 96 (guiadescorchados.cl, 2019)

This is a blend of Howell Mountain fruit and purchased valley floor fruit. It spent 32 months in new French oak. The resulting wine is more approachable young than Dunn’s Howell Mountain offering and contains all the classic Napa Cab traits. CHÂTEAU BRANE-CANTENAC 20162e cru, AC Margaux
TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Brane-Cantenac is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Carmenere picked from 22 September until 17 October (the tiny parcel of Carmenere picked three days later). The yields came in at 51 hectoliters per hectare and it is matured in 75% new oak and 25% one-year-old barrels, the final alcohol level 13.3%. It has a beautifully defined, very detailed bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit laced with cedar and graphite notes, living up to its nom de plume as the “Pauillac of Margaux.” The palate is simply the best that I have ever tasted at the estate, without question. This has presence, but also weightless-ness, filigree tannin and perfectly pitched acidity, with real intensity and drive. The tension here is outstanding and the persistence is incredibly long. It is not the showiest of all the 2016s by a long stretch, and yet it is everything you could possibly want from a Margaux. Like Beychevelle this year, the 2016 Brane-Cantenac puts recent vintages in the shade, thanks not only to the growing season, but also a new punching down system in their gravity-fed winery that was completed in 2015. TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has the prettiest bouquet among Romain Taupenot’s Village Crus, offering precocious red cherry, crushed strawberry and orange pith aromas. The detailed palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and a poised finish. Just superb. Drinking window: 2020-2030. Score: 90-92 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Jan. 2019)

HENRI DE VILLAMONT LES DAMODES NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES 1ER CRU 2014AC
Les Damodes is in the northern part of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, just to the south of the premier cru appellations of Vosne-Romanée. Local legend says there were fairies that inhabited this rocky hillside above the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and that these feminine figures inspired the “dames” decipherable in the name of the vineyard. The wine is matured 8-10 months in oak barrels and a further several years in cellar.

LOUIS JADOT CHAPELLE- CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2011AC
TASTING NOTE: Bright, full medium red. Knockout nose shows an almost candied character to the aromas of strawberry, cherry, dark berries, lavender, menthol and Indian spices. Dense, suave and juicy, with a distinctly silky texture to the broad flavors of red fruits, menthol and spices. Utterly seamless, suave, classically dry Chapelle with outstanding energy and definition. Still tight today but the wine’s fine-grained tannins and superb breadth and length suggest that it will make a great bottle a decade hence. Score: 95 (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, March 2014)

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is already extremely charming, bursting from the glass with a lavish bouquet of cassis, dried rose petals, coniferous forest floor and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, with an elegantly textural attack, a nicely concentrated core of fruit and lively acids, concluding with a precise, vibrant finish. TASTING NOTE: An exceptionally floral-inflected nose reflects notes of plum, violet, lavender, lilac and plenty of spice nuances. There is both excellent volume and fine mid-palate density to the medium weight flavors that possess fine depth and persistence on the balanced finish that is shaped by much more finely-grained tannins. TOLLOT-BEAUT CHOREY-LÈS-BEAUNE 2017AC
TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Chorey-lès-Beaune Village is the usual blend of three sectors of the appellation that Nathalie Tollot blended in the proportion of what will represent the final blend, since each is raised separately. It sees no new oak. The perfumed cranberry and wild strawberry bouquet is nicely defined, and the pretty palate shows quite sharp acidity that lends freshness and edginess. I like the fruit profile here – very pure and full of life with a vigorous, refreshing finish that leaves a spicy residue. Very fine. Drinking window: 2020-2026. The palate has a super plush, fleshy and flamboyant feel. There’s concentration of flavor, density of texture and fluidity to the shape and depth in the finish. TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet en Cailleret 1er Cru has a slightly more reduced bouquet than its peers, just a touch of struck match clouding the terroir expression at the moment. The fresh, lively palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Touches of white peach and grapefruit mingle with lemongrass toward the composed, persistent finish. The grapes for this wine are sourced from three vineyards that each reflect the nuanced differences in soil types. The Narvaux vineyard, which provides most of the grapes, is on a steep slope and planted in gravelly limestone soils. The Crotots vineyard is predominantly clay with a limestone base and some gravels. The Grand Charrons is very gravelly with limestone and clay and very fertile alluvium soils. The resulting wine will be an elegant, floral, vibrant expression of Meursault, with delicate shading courtesy of 14 months in French oak.

SICILYRED WINE
MORGANTE DON ANTONIO RISERVA NERO D’AVOLA 2016DOC Sicilia
TASTING NOTE: Behold the venerable Don Antonio, one of the first wines to put Nero d’Avola on the world map of native grapes. On the label of the 2016 Sicilia Nero d’Avola Riserva Don Antonio, you’ll notice that this wine is now identified as a Riserva, making use of the newly expanded appellation laws of the Sicilia DOC. This is a beautiful medium to full-bodied wine with the type of extraction and thickness that we remember from vintages past and the typical characteristics of the grape. Black fruit and Morello cherry is followed by black olive, grilled fennel, scorched earth and toasted pistachio with bitter chocolate. The aromas are all Sicily. Drink date: 2019-2026. PLANETA SITO DELL’ULMO MERLOT 2014IGT Sicilia
TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Sicilia Menfi Merlot Sito dell’Ulmo is a darkly concentrated wine with soft cherry layering that segues to spice, plum and moist earth. This is not your usual Merlot by any stretch because there is a wild, slightly green side here that resembles olive or Sicilian caper. But there’s plenty of ripe cherry fruit to round off any hard edges. The wine becomes increasingly focused
solid intensity and firmness of its aromas, which transcend fruit and veer toward balsamic herb, licorice, tar and smoke instead. The tannins offer a moment of sweetness and softness, before you are aware of their undeniable firmness. In all, there is a certain glossiness or satiny quality to the mouthfeel that underlines the wine’s carefully crafted integration. I would describe this as a classic and also a somewhat austere Barbaresco that fully deserves extra cellar time to stretch those tight muscles and grow in volume. This wine will award those who wait. TASTING NOTE: Another vivid wine, the 2015 Matarocchio marries freshness with power and depth. In 2015, the 100% Cabernet Franc Matarocchio has a more red fruit and floral profile than it has in the past. TASTING NOTE: Cortonesi works through the challenge with a sangiovese in 2014 that finds critical mass and therefore celebrates la vita bella in Brunello. With no reason to choose a Vigna-designate nor a Riserva to produce, the best of the best therefore finds its way into this eponymous family Brunello. TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Saffredi brings full-throttled intensity in a very well-balanced wine. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Petit Verdot (10%) spends 18 months in mostly new oak. This vintage is compact, firm and precise, with lovely floral aromas on the bouquet in front of blackberry and plum. Long oak toasting gives the wine tasty notes of spice and cinnamon and rounds the bouquet off nicely. The mouthfeel is soft and velvety. This is a complex, integrated and absolutely beautiful wine. Like the other cuvées, it’s made in tiny quantities and there’s just 326 cases out there. Score: 97 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Aug. 2, 2017)

STONESTREET UPPER BARN CHARDONNAY 2016Alexander Valley, Sonoma County
TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Chardonnay Upper Barn Vineyard comes from the oldest vines on the estate, planted in 1982. Fermented in barrel and aged for 11 months in 47% new French oak, it is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal pink grapefruit, white peaches and Granny Smith apples with nuances of honeysuckle, lemon tart and praline. Medium to full-bodied, it explodes in the mouth with citrus and savory layers, with

a gorgeous silkiness and loads of ginger and mineral sparks coming through on the finish. Wow! Drink date: 2019-2028. Score: 97+ (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, robertparker.com, Feb. 28, 2019)

ROSEROCK ZÉPHIRINE PINOT NOIR 2016Eloa-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley(Domaine Drouhin Oregon)
TASTING NOTE: Super pure aromas of vibrant, red and darker cherries and subtle, foresty complexity. The palate has a very supple, lithe and juicy feel with abundant and intense, concentrated and very pure, red and black-cherry flavors. Drink or hold. BETZ HEART OF THE HILL CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2016Red Mountain, Yakima Valley, Columbia Valley
TASTING NOTE: Tasted from barrel, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Heart of the Hill is very promising indeed, offering up brooding and youthfully primary aromas of cassis and plums. On the palate, it’s tightly coiled and impressively complete and seamless, with superior detail, definition and dimension to the 2015. Powerful and richly structured but succulent, even tangy, I’m expecting it to show very well indeed in bottle. Score: 96-98 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, June 29, 2018)

HEDGES RED MOUNTAIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2016Red Mountain, Yakima Valley, Columbia Valley
TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain (76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 5% Syrah, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec) was brought up in mostly American oak (13% new). It’s one of the darker colored reds in the lineup and offers a Bordeaux-like bouquet of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, earth, and leather. Medium to full-bodied, pure, seamless, and beautifully layered, it shines on its purity of fruit and balance. It will keep for 10-15 years. Score: 93 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, April 11, 2019)

FORTIFIED WINEStunningly aordable sweeties and a rare, dry Madeira from 35 seasons past.
COCCHI BAROLO CHINATODOCG, Piedmont, Italy
TASTING NOTE: This is fortified (16.5%) vermouth-style wine – based on Barolo but flavoured with quinine bark, rhubarb stem and root ginger. So very particular flavours to say the least, but flavours that I adore. It pours pale garnet colour. The nose lifts off with intense cranberry-rhubarb frutiness, peppery spice, ginger and all kinds of evergreen. It is full bodied, slightly sweet, hot and intensely bitter. Real power on the palate, so you might want to pour it over ice to chill a bit, without altering the lovely flavours. Score: 94 (David Lawrason, winealign.com, July 18, 2018)

COSSART GORDON SERCIAL MADEIRA 1985DOC, Portugal
TASTING NOTE: Frankly dry, with singed almond, walnut and alder notes leading the way, backed by sesame, sandalwood and date flavors. A lingering hint of Brazil nut adds length and cut. Drink now. Score: 95 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, Feb. 28, 2019)

POÇAS JUNIOR VINTAGE PORT 2016DOP, Portugal
TASTING NOTE: Densely textured with dusty tannins and full of black plum skin and prune flavors, this is a ripe, complex wine. Its sweeter character does not spoil the great structure and dry core that will allow this exemplary wine to age. Drink from 2029. Ranked #30 in Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wines of 2018.
