As well as its fabulous reception areas, spacious bedrooms

and exquisite en suite bathrooms, it also boasts an indoor

coming downstairs for a swim or sauna in the pool area

and then perhaps working out in the gym. “In the evening,

they might dine with friends on the terrace, looking across

the lit-up garden as the sun goes down.”

The attractive, sought-after location of Emerson Park

was the perfect place to build such an exquisite home,

said Ivan. Nestling in just over 0.4 of an acre, it sits behind

electric gates on a tree-lined avenue.

“There were a lot of mature trees there, which made it an

ideal plot. The grounds have now been landscaped, which

means there are pleasant, leafy views from the house,” he

said.

Work began in May 2008 on the bespoke, six bedroom

property. The aim was create a magical home, which

offered impressive levels of modern day comfort as well as

fabulous leisure opportunities. “This is a completely unique

home. Everything at Heywood House is not only of a high

quality, but is also bespoke,” said Ivan.

Strolling out across their land, Michael and Joanne Lee marvel at the beauty of the changing

seasons at White House Farm. Their magnificent 16th century home, with its equestrian facilities,

sits in its own quiet corner of the countryside, allowing them to be close to nature whilst enjoying

a rich and comfortable lifestyle.

“It is so beautiful here that it is hard not to fall in love with the place as soon as you see it,” said Michael,

who bought the country home five years ago. “In spring time, the woods are carpeted with bluebells

and in the late summer you can wander through the orchard just as the apples, pears and plums are

ripening.”

Exquisite Décor

The Lees, who were drawn to the house because of its beautiful situation, equestrian facilities and

extensive accommodation, have decorated extensively since moving in. “The older part of the house

has a lot of character and we wanted to make the most of that,” he said. “There is lots of lovely old

wood here and we love the large inglenook fireplace. Elsewhere in the house we have gone for a more

contemporary style, working our way through each room one at a time.”

Winning RoomsNowhere is more modern than the fabulous cinema room, with its seven foot Arcam screen. Now the owners can settle down in the evening and watch their favourite movies and television programmes in style. “We changed this area completely. It was an office,” said Michael. “This is now a very comfortable room to spend time in. We are into our sports in a big way so it is perfect for us.” Meals are usually taken in the spacious, modern farmhouse-style kitchen while on special occasions the family will gather together in a more formal setting. “The dining room is a beautiful room with all its wonderful beams and the large table,” he said.

Welcoming GuestsWhen not relaxing in the cinema room or gathering in the kitchen, the family can usually be found in one of the sitting rooms in the evening. “We spend a lot of time in the large sitting room. This is a lovely room. We do a lot of our entertaining in here,” he said. “In fact, this house is just fantastic for entertaining. There is so much space.” At parties guests are usually welcomed into the sumptuous entrance hall with its handsome staircase and minstrels’ gallery. They can then flow on through the house and out on to the large terrace. “We often sit beside the outdoor pool in the summer with friends,” he said. “We have had some wonderful parties there over the years.”

Step Back in TimeDating back at least as far as the Saxon era, when much of the land is thought to have belonged to the Bishops of London, who owned an ancient manor here, Wickham Bishops sits on the borders of beautiful Tiptree Heath. White House Farm

itself is thought to date back to the 16th century and many of its exquisite original features remain. Today exposed timbers can still be seen in the beamed ceilings and stud walls, and an inglenook fireplace is still used every winter when the wood-burner brings a cosy glow and sense of the past to the character-filled former farmhouse.

The Changing SeasonsUpstairs at White House Farm, the character-filled bedrooms enjoy views over the gardens and land beyond. From here, the family often spot deer and birds, and can gaze out to enjoy the changing colours of the trees throughout the year. “It is so pretty here. We are very sad to be leaving but with our daughter going off to university soon we really do not need quite so much space,” said Michael. “This has been a home where we have been able to enjoy privacy and the peace and quiet, as well as a lot of the activities we enjoy. With beautiful land that rolls into the countryside beyond and such a fantastic house, it really has been a perfect family home for us.”

Setting the SceneWith its green paddocks, attractive lake and approximately 12 acres (STMS) of woodland, White House Farm offers scenery that is second to none. A former fruit farm, the property still has an orchard that yields generous amounts of apples, pears and plums every year. “We have 18 varieties of apple,” said Michael. “The fruit is wonderful but there is far more than we can ever eat ourselves. We let the local WI and the church come to pick it so they can use it in their jams and pies.” One of the family’s favourite places to walk is the woodland, where they often spot

wildlife. “Every day you see something different here,” he added. “The colours change week by week and in the springtime, when the bluebells are out, it is just so pretty.”

Life of LeisureWith so much to offer, White House Farm has given its owners fabulous leisure opportunities. In the summer, the outdoor heated pool has been the perfect place to entertain friends and while away long, hot afternoons. All year round, members of the family have also enjoyed getting out and about on their quad bikes – and Michael and Joanne’s son has even created a track at the farm. From April to September, the fishing lake comes into its own when they have been able to settle down by the water to catch trout and carp. “The lake is in a beautiful spot, right at the end of our land,” said Michael. “When you go down there in the middle of the summer it really is something pretty special.”

In the SaddleWhite House Farm would be ideal for anyone looking for an equestrian property in an idyllic setting, said Michael Lee. With approximately 66 acres (STMS) of beautiful land as well as quiet rural lanes, there is plenty of wonderful countryside to explore on horseback. “The equestrian facilities here at White House Farm are perfect,” he said. “You could comfortably keep seven or eight horses in the stables. We also have four paddocks and a full international size ménage, which is floodlit.” With the separate annexe that could be used to house staff, the property would be suitable for anyone wishing to run an equestrian business from home.

PROPERTY DETAILS

Surrounded by approximately 66 acres (STMS) of countryside and woodland, 16th century White House Farm offers a rural lifestyle with superb opportunities for leisure.

With its own equestrian facilities, including stables, paddocks and an international-size, floodlit ménage, it would be ideal for any horse-lover and with its outdoor swimming pool and fishing lake it offers the chance to simply relax and unwind at weekends. Chatting together in the beautiful, hand-built kitchen at the heart of Walcot, a magnificent six

bedroom Arts and Crafts home, the owners admit this is where they enjoy spending most of their

time. The house has an imposing exterior yet inside it offers a careful combination of contemporary

style and modern day comfort. “I don’t know why, but we always seem to congregate in the kitchen,” said

the owner. “It is a spacious room with a table that seats up to 10 people and we have a large 52” flat screen

where we like to eat.”

The house, which is locally listed, is situated in the Bickley Park

conservation area. It has been lovingly and sympathetically

restored by the current owners who purchased it eight years

ago. “I often used to drive along Woodlands Road and I always

liked the look of the house. I had always wanted a home

from the Arts and Crafts period, so when we were looking to

move and discovered Walcot was up for sale, I was very keen

to buy it,” said the owner. At that time, however, the back of

the original house had been made into a separate home but

the owner of this property agreed to sell too and the two

sections were brought back together. “We made Walcot

liveable first by decorating throughout half of the property. I

wanted to create a house that had all of its original features

on show, but also provided luxury amenities for a more

modern way of life.”

French polishers were called in to clean and restore all of

the original oak flooring on the ground floor. “The flooring

in the hallway is truly magnificent,” he said. “But much of it

could no longer be seen when we moved in. “The billiards

room, with all of its original oak wall panelling is mentioned in

the property’s listing by the local conservation officer as one

of the finest examples of a drawing room in the whole of

Climbing the exquisite original staircase, past the three tier chandelier, Derek and Aeysha

Clarke admire the handsome period features of their magnificent home. Once part of the

glorious Burley-on-the-Hill estate, in Rutland, beautifully converted Griffin House has been

their home for the past 11 years.

A bright, spacious property, the five bedroom house still retains much of its 17th century splendour

and has been a magical place to live. From its attractive internal columns to its delightful walled garden,

every corner of their stunning home has been enjoyed to the full.

“This is a lovely house, which in many ways is quite dramatic,” said Derek. “We love its location and all

the character it offers. It has been a wonderful place to live.” Griffin House itself dates in part back to

the 16th century. Once part of the former Burley-on-the-Hill estate, it was built by Daniel Finch, once

Earl of Nottingham, to replace the Duke of Buckingham’s house, which was destroyed during the Civil

War. Still Grade I listed, much of the property as it is seen today dates back to the late 17th century.

His luxurious five-bedroom property, which also features a separate villa, offers truly unique seclusion while, unusually, also being in a fabulous location for reaching London.

“The layout of this house on the ground floor makes it ideal for hosting large parties.”

Tucked away in the heart of Ashley Hill Forest, three-storey Clifton was built in 1991 on the site of an old hunting lodge. The property was carefully planned to provide light and space, as well as comfort.

In every room at Clifton there are lots of windows, which bring the panoramic views, as well as the light, right into the house.

The main house opens up into the glorious entrance hall, with a beautiful winding staircase and then into fabulous reception spaces.

Another open plan area has doors out on to the terrace and also leads into the kitchen/breakfast room.

Guests are always welcome at Clifton. On the first floor are five large bedrooms, each of which has its own en suite bathroom and a study. A staircase leads up to the second floor.

With its three bedrooms, two bathrooms and sunken seating area, the detached villa also provides ample additional accommodation for visitors.

Summer parties at the Burchetts Green house are often held out in the garden, where the tennis court is always an attraction.

“I wanted to make the most of the full views of the forest.”

“But I also wanted it to be a modern, airy house, which was very bright and had plenty of room for guests.”

Relaxing in the drawing room with the French windows open in the summer is the perfect way to spend an afternoon at Deeves Hall. Surrounded by fields yet within easy reach of Boreham Wood, the attractive, period house has given the Mohammed family an idyllic

lifestyle.

“When we saw the house it did need a lot of work but we fell in love with it immediately,” said Laike. “Being the place where Deep Purple was formed, it does have an interesting history, but what we love most is being so close to nature.” The couple bought the house, which was originally built as a “gentleman’s residence” in 2006. They decided to renovate the entire building inside and out,

With four reception rooms, there is plenty of space to spread out. “I spend a lot of time in the study and the formal drawing room is perfect when we have friends here. We open up the French windows in the summer and can walk out into the garden,” he says. “Then there’s another family room that is ideal for the kids and is where we all watch television.”

The kitchen is another room that is well-used. It is a large space where a great deal of cooking takes place and the family enjoy breakfast together. “The kitchen is lovely because you can open doors on both sides of it to enjoy the views,” he added. “We have a terrace just outside where we sit and drink tea in the summer. Later on in the day we sit out at the front and watch the sun set.”

and to spend time landscaping the gardens as well.“It was a very charming place and we just loved it when we saw it,” said. Laike “We did take it on as a project - my wife is an interior designer. We worked our way through the whole house, keeping it fairly simple but replacing folding shutters and fireplaces, and maintaining the wooden floors.” Today the interior of the house is an exquisite combination of the old and the new.

A contemporary finish in some spaces contrasts beautifully with period-style features and carefully chosen pieces of furniture. “We have a fairly eclectic mixture of furniture, which does work well in the house,” said Laike. “We have a bar, for example, that we bought in Marrakesh. This is in our drawing room and is great when we are entertaining. We also have a Chinese day bed that we use as a main

Standing in their sun-filled kitchen, looking out on to

the garden, Ferdi and Paul Abbott still remember the

day they decided to buy their stunning new build

Surrey home. They had only stepped into the show home

for the seven-bedroom, detached property, moments

before - but they were struck by its light, space and

impressive design.

Since then, the exquisite three-storey house, with its

indoor pool complex, has provided them with the most

heavenly home. It has been the perfect place to host

summer parties for friends and has given them sumptuous

and relaxed spaces in which to enjoy family life together.

“This is a beautiful house, which has a lot of character

as well as space,” she explained. “You step into it and

there is a beautiful entrance hall with a marble floor and

black wrought iron staircase leading up. There is also a

wonderful sense of space here. You can look up and see as

far as the top floor.”

THE ABBOTTS KNEW THEY WANTED THEIR GLORIOUS NEW HOME, WITH ITS INDOOR POOL, BEFORE IT WAS EVEN COMPLETED – SINCE THEN, LIFE AT RUSHSTEAD HOUSE HAS BEEN SIMPLY DIVINE

SUMMER PARTIES

With several different reception rooms, there are

dedicated spaces for entertaining and for children to

spread out in. “But it is great because there is an easy

flow between rooms,” explained Ferdi. “Double doors

everywhere open right up, making it ideal for parties.

“This has been a very happy house. We have had some

great occasions here. We usually have a summer party

with about 150 people and a marquee in the garden.”

Careful decoration combines with fabulous design inside

Rushstead House. Light colours have been used in many

rooms as a backdrop for both stylish, contemporary items

of furniture and antique pieces. Elsewhere, stronger shades

have been brought in. The dining room features a deep red

and the hall a warm yellow.

FRIENDLY KITCHEN

The centre of the home is the kitchen, she continued. A

large space, which combines moss green walls with subtle

yellow cupboards, and granite work surfaces, is both stylish

and practical. “This is where everybody congregates and

where friends gather round the central island. From here

people wander outside or through into the drawing room

or dining room,” she said.

STUNNING BEDROOMS

On the first floor of the house are five bedrooms. A

further two can be found on the top floor, creating an

almost self-contained living area, where the Abbotts’

housekeeper and family live.

“The layout of the house works very well,” said Ferdi. “My

bedroom is just lovely. It overlooks the back garden and I

can see towards the church spire. I also have an internal

staircase within my bedroom that leads up to a library

area. There is a balcony where you can sit to have coffee

Ferdi and Paul still love their beautiful home, with its many

THE FIRST TIME HE STEPPED INTO THE MAGNIFICENT HALL AT CHURCH

END FARM, TONY KNEW THAT IN THIS BEAUTIFULLY CONVERTED

300-YEAR-OLD BARN HE HAD FOUND HIS HOME

Relaxing on the galleried landing above the entrance hall and looking out towards the neighbouring church and the unfolding countryside, Tony reflects

on how much he will miss this lovely home.

“I was looking for an old, historic property with character and some land. I loved it as soon as I walked in,” Tony said. “It has fantastic views from the galleried landing and throughout the house, and it’s very private. “He added: “My favourite part of the house is the hall, without a doubt. I like to sit on the landing on a Sunday, and read and look out toward the church and fields.”

The stunning floor-to-ceiling windows in the barn mean natural light cascades through the open plan living area. “It’s a fantastically light home with loads of windows,” he said. With light walls – many painted in Farrow & Ball China White – contrasting with exposed beams and brickwork, this is a home where contemporary style beautifully complements period character, downstairs the warm hues of the American pine flooring add to the effect.

THE BEAUTIFUL PERIOD HOME CAPTURED HER HEART THROUGH ITS

EXQUISITE CHARACTER, FANTASTIC POTENTIAL FOR KEEPING HORSES

AND GLORIOUS VIEWS TOWARDS THE NORTH DOWNS AND BOX HILL

Walking out to see her Spanish horses on a dewy morning or sitting around the pool watching the sun set, the current owner of Horsehill Farm has

fallen in love with her home. She bought the stunning rural retreat just a year ago, with the aim of transforming it into the perfect equine property.

This she has achieved - but now, she admits, she will find it hard to leave her fabulous home. “This is an attractive country house with 10 acres of land, a swimming pool, a separate cottage and stables. I bought it because I wanted to make it more equestrian and to do up the house,” she said. “But I breed horses and unfortunately I need more land now. I know I will miss everything about this place when I leave. It is absolutely beautiful.” The main five bedroom house at Horsehill Farm has two halves, each built in different periods.

Enjoying an elevated position with breathtaking views of the North Downs, Horsehill Farm is a fabulous Grade II Listed 5 bedroom home. Amid the 10 acres of grounds (STMS), there is a 2 bedroom cottage, pool house, stables and outbuilding making it ideal for equestrian pursuits.

PROPERTY DETAILS

The front of the property is Georgian while the rear, once a Tudor coaching inn, dates back to the 15th century. “It’s wonderful because we have these beautiful high ceilings at the front and then lovely beams at the back. Inside, the two areas blend together so well,” she said.

“There really is a feeling of so much history in this house and yet at the same time you are enveloped in a real sense of warmth as soon as you come in. I knew I would enjoy living here.” Each room in the Grade II listed house has been renovated and redecorated.

The Tudor rooms have been given neutral shades to accentuate the dark beams. The Georgian areas have been decorated in subtle Farrow & Ball shades. “I bought furniture especially for the house, to go with the style of each room,” she added.

Exquisite homes that could be found in the most upmarket of glossy magazines and stunning interiors that would grace the pages of any Sunday

supplement.Premium estate agent Fine is making a name for itself through the lifestyle promotion of its properties - but there’s more to its techniques than simply striking presentation.Property guru and industry spokesman Peter Knight has recently revealed that women tend to be the decision-makers in the home buying and selling processes. And, following survey results from his leading creative agency, Phoenix, has suggested agents across the UK ought to be doing more to appeal to their female client base.“We work with over 2,000 estate agent offices across the UK and they have said to us that where there is a choice - ie they are dealing with a couple rather than an individual - more than 80 percent of the time it will be the woman they are speaking to,” said Peter, chairman of Phoenix and author of the best-selling HEMP – the Highly Effective Marketing Plan. “At the same time, however, most of them are not appealing to women through their marketing. From the point of view of winning business, many estate agents are simply getting it wrong.”

BEHIND EVERY GREAT MANThe survey is carried out once a year and asks a total of 35 different questions. Results are then collated and used

by the company to offer its clients up-to-date marketing advice. “Of course there is a danger of stereotyping people and making blanket statements, but we have found that, in a typical household, it tends to be the woman who organises valuations, considers available properties and makes the choice on which ones to view,” said Peter.“The man often becomes more involved when figures start being discussed and tends to be the one to do any negotiating.”

IN THE NETAdvertising, websites and brochures should therefore be carefully designed to appeal to women as well as to men,

he went on. But, quite simply, this is not happening. “A classic example was four years ago when the World Cup was on and a lot of agents were making comparisons with the football in their marketing campaigns,” he said.“But this was only likely to turn many women off. What they should have been doing was suggesting that while their husbands were glued to the TV and they were fed up with the football, they could escape

the World Cup by arranging to visit some properties.”

A FINE EXAMPLEOne exception, however, was Fine, he went on. With its magazine-style marketing techniques, it was bucking the trend. “Men typically prefer information to be provided to them in terms of brief facts and figures whereas women prefer to be told a story. “This is what Fine is doing with its

WHAT women want

MOST MEN WILL STEP IN TO DEAL WITH THE FIGURES BUT IT’S OFTEN THE WOMEN WHO DO MUCH OF THE DECISION-MAKING IN HOME BUYING. ABIGAIL SALTMARSH TURNS THE PAGES TO DISCOVER WHY FINE’S MAGAZINE-STYLE MARKETING IS THEREFORE SO EFFECTIVE

“Men typically prefer information to be provided to them in terms of brief facts and figures whereas women prefer to be told a story.”

vendor interviews. It is giving the story behind a home and that is what many women seem to enjoy.”

THROUGH THE KEYHOLEDean Heaviside, a director of Fine, pioneered the lifestyle marketing techniques, which include the use of pictures taken by an experienced magazine photographer and editorials written by professional journalists. “Our approach is based on features in glossy magazines. Millions of people in Britain pour over homes and interiors magazines every year, and are glued to property shows on television,” he said.

“This is because they love to see right into homes and to find out more about the stories behind them. Yes, this technique does particularly appeal to women but we also find it does not alienate men, as many of them also find it an interesting approach. Furthermore, it also gives us the opportunity to really highlight the individual attributes of the very special properties we sell. This helps them to really stand out when potential buyers are deciding which ones to view.”

POPULAR WITH VENDORSOne recent success story for Fine has been the sale of a beautiful, bespoke lakeside property on Bilbrook Lane, in Milton Keynes. Owners Sam and Alan, who had seen little interest in their stunning six-bedroom home when it was previously marketed with another agent, were

simply thrilled when it sold within just two weeks of being promoted by Fine.

“The house sold within five days of the newspaper advertisement,” said Sam, who with her husband oversaw the design and build of the exquisite Tudor-style manor.“We were exceptionally pleased with Fine and everything they did. The professional approach of the staff combined with the lifestyle marketing has really impressed us.“Using a professional photographer to take beautiful pictures and a writer to describe the home in a lifestyle manner is something very different for the industry - but it really seems to work.”

THE INSIDE STORYSharon Barrett and Anthony Church, who are in the process of buying the contemporary house, admit that it was Sharon who initially found the Fine magazine-style brochure so appealing “I looked at the brochure first and thought it was fantastic, so I showed it to him,” she said. “I think it’s nice to have the inside story on a house and I spent time reading it. I’m sure a lot of other women would agree. My husband really looked quickly at the pictures then at the floor plan, which was what he wanted to see and I think a lot of blokes would be the same.”

And she added: “I can see why this works particularly well with women. They enjoy reading the brochure, then, if they like the property, they show it to their husband and

suggest going to see it.”

TIME FOR CHANGEGill Holdstock and her husband Phillip have recently bought Peacocks, in Colchester, through Fine. Gill admitted she did a lot of the initial ground work in seeking out their next home. “I did most of it because I work part-time,” she explained. Peter said this was typical of many potential home buying couples. “Women often do the organising because they perhaps work part-time or are at home with children,” he said. “I am just surprised that so many agents are still not recognising this.”

“I think it’s nice to have the inside story on a house and I spent time reading it. I’m sure a lot of other women would agree.”

SITTING OUT ON THE TERRACE OF THEIR BEAUTIFUL BESPOKE HOME,

THE OWNERS OF THE STABLES CAN ABSORB THE PANORAMIC VIEWS

AND ENJOY THE SKYSCAPES OF BOTH NIGHT AND DAY

Splashing in the pool on a sunny day or looking out over the garden from the comfort of the conservatory – the owners of The Stables have

created a home that meets their needs perfectly. When they first came to visit the property more than 16 years ago, it was only four years old yet was little more than a shell. But having decided to take it on and make it their own, they have transformed it into a welcoming home, which really makes the most of its far-reaching views and beautiful open skies.

“We liked the location of the house and the fact it was so open plan,” said the current owner. “It also had an unusual design, was light and airy and had rooms that were really well proportioned.”

After moving in, the owners set to work bringing the modern four bedroom house to life. They removed the existing conservatory and built an architect-designed extension, which gave them more living space downstairs and an extra bedroom above.

An individually designed stylish residence in semi-rural location with amenities of the city close by. Bespoke kitchen/breakfast room. 3 reception rooms, 4 bedrooms. Garage with studio. Swimming pool and approx one acre

(STMS) landscaped gardens.

Lighting the fire on a winter’s day and settling down to relax in the beamed dining room, Terry and Brenda Clayton can easily conjure up a sense of their property’s past. The Old House, which dates

back to 1760, has been beautifully restored by the couple and, today, once again displays many of its beautiful original features. Once a cottage on the Haynes Park Estate, the property was auctioned off in 1914 and was bought by a member of the family of the Marquess of Bath. She employed the services of an architect from the Royal Academy who built a new wing and worked on the property’s interior design.

“We have had lots of wonderful parties here. When my daughter was married we had a marquee in the garden and we also had a superb party for her 21st birthday.”

RELAXING IN THE EARLY SPRING SUNSHINE TO THE SOOTHING

LANE HOME SOAK UP THE ATMOSPHERE OF PEACE AND TRANQUILITY

This has been their home for almost 30 years now and has always been a true retreat, somewhere to escape to after a busy day at work.

In the decades that they have owned the home, it has been remodelled some three or four times, explained the owner. This has been to ensure it remains up-to-date in style and is always able to offer a whole host of modern day comforts. “The property is wonderful and the setting is just gorgeous,” he said. “The house is extremely comfortable and is great for entertaining friends or for relaxing in at weekends.”

Set in approximately an acre of land (STMS), the property at 5 Chapel Lane was originally a bungalow. During its many renovations, however, it was transformed into a spacious family home, which now sits beautifully within its surroundings. “The last time we remodelled the house we had it almost completely rebuilt in stone,” he said. “It was like a completely new development in many ways - and today still retains that feel.”

Watching his children exploring the grounds and sitting out in the beautiful gardens with his parents and brother - The Coach House

at Goff ’s Oak has provided the current owner with a wealth of wonderful memories. The past 14 years at the elegant home on Silver Street are to be treasured times spent in a stunning location with his family all around him.

“This is a wonderful building, set in the most beautiful grounds. At the time we also bought the gatehouse and gardener’s cottage. My brother and his family moved into the Gardener’s Cottage and we also built The Lodge for my parents. “My brother and I each have five children and it has been just idyllic for them. They have been able to ride their bicycles and play together and we have been able to enjoy a lifestyle that has been just perfect.”Once the coach house to an impressive mansion, the five-bedroom, Grade II listed property sits in approximately three acres (STMS) of glorious grounds. And along with the main building, the owner is also selling a separate annexe.

“When we bought The Coach House, it had been divided into two apartments. We brought it back into one home and renovated it,” he said. “Our aim was really to keep as much of the original style as we possibly could and to save original features such as the beautiful windows. We also built the detached annexe which is ideal for guests.”

Today the interior of the home has a bright, contemporary feel that works beautifully within the period building. Spaces have been kept as open as possible and light comes pouring in through the large sash windows, some of which are circular or arched. The house opens up into a magnificent entrance hall with a flagstone floor and minstrels’ gallery. Here the family have chosen to arrange the space as a dining hall. “This is just ideal for entertaining. We sit in here with friends and can look right up two and a half storeys into the vaulted ceiling,” he said.

The idea behind the design of the house was to create a home with large bedrooms and plenty of en suite bathrooms, said Gill. “We wanted

” The kitchen is also a sizeable space. As well as a full range of high specification appliances, it features bespoke maple and American walnut cupboards and star galaxy black granite work surfaces. There is a large, semi-circular seating area. “This room is very modern. With sofas and the television at one end it is more of a living room really, somewhere we all use - all day and every day,” she said. “This where we all head to as soon as we come in, and it’s where our friends sit down for coffee and a chat.”

THE OWNERS TRANSFORMED THEIR IMPOSING EDWARDIAN HOUSE INTO

NATIONAL GLOSSY MAGAZINE

Sitting on the balcony with a cup of tea, the current owners enjoy relaxing at their Dorking home. The house boasts many original features and its imposing Edwardian

elegance gives it plenty of character.

Outside, the substantial home, which is set in 1.3 acres (STMS), has an attractive elegance. Inside, its spaces are spread over three floors and have been beautifully designed to combine period style with modern day comfort. “The house is so lovely that it has been featured in magazines, including Homes and Gardens and Surrey Life,” said one of the owners.

ARCHITECT DESIGNEDThe spacious accommodation at Sandells is spread over three floors, but one of the things that appealed most to car collector owner was the extensive garaging the property offered. “It is a beautiful-looking house and has a lovely driveway lined with laurels leading up to it,” he said. “But what I liked about it most was that there is garaging for up to six cars.

” The house was one of several designed and built by an architect in 1908. There are a couple of others nearby designed by the same chap, but ours is the biggest and I understand the architect lived in it himself,” he added.

“There are balconies off two of the bedrooms and they were both in need of some work, so I had them refurbished,” he said. “You can seat two or three people on one of them, but the other is much larger and you can get quite a few more people on it.”

REFLECTING LIGHTOn the ground floor, the large hallway features original wood panelling and at one end has a floor to ceiling gilt edged mirror reflecting light all around the entrance room. The double-aspect drawing room has a fireplace, which the owners had re-tiled in slate, and original parquet flooring. It is the place where the family like to sit and watch TV.

There is also a formal dining room, with doors opening out to a covered terrace, a study and a children’s play room. “The kids have got their own TV and DVD player and there are bean bags all over the floor,” he said.

Stepping into the large hall at Three Gables, in Harlow, visitors are immediately impressed with the bright, open feel of the 13 year-old home. Owner Siew was also wowed by the magnificent area when she first visited the modern Edwardian-style property, which has a heated swimming pool, some four years ago. “I loved the fact that all the rooms

were a good size and that the whole house had a very light, spacious feel. When you first come in, the entrance hall almost feels like another room. In fact, when I have parties at the house, people often gather here to chat before moving on into the other rooms and the garden,” she said. With a passion for interior design, Siew was also keen to find a home in which she could indulge her love of simple, classical style. With its well-proportioned rooms and airy feel, Three Gables was perfect for her elegant furnishings and furniture. Siew was also drawn to Three Gables’ unusual location. Tucked away on a quiet road, she knew she would be able to enjoy tranquillity as well as easy access to the town itself and its many amenities. “I think houses of this size, in this kind of position are very rare indeed around here,” she admitted.

An impressive house, beautiful mature gardens and a separate

bungalow, The Wickets is a property that never fails to leave

visitors feeling bowled over

“Having a bungalow with independent access from the main house has enabled us to live in harmony with our mother and to look after her as well.”

After a hard day, the owner of The Wickets likes nothing better than to fill up the original 1930s cast iron bath in the master bedroom suite, pour a glass of something cold and lie back to watch television on the screen fitted into the bathroom wall. “It has been designed with many special

features that make it an ideal place for a spot of pampering.” Indeed, this 1930s family home has been refurbished to a very high standard.

The current owners were specifically attracted to it because of its location and the fact that within the grounds was another single storey building, which they have converted into a one-bedroom bungalow with private access for their mother.

The current owners Riding Bank Barn had the vision to transform this

delightful former apple store into a fabulous family home with gorgeous

views

“Originally it was a storage barn for fruit – the land around here was planted out with pear and apple trees that were ploughed up years ago.”

Relaxing in his drawing room and enjoying splendid views of the surrounding countryside, the owner of this wonderful home reflects on the transformation of this lovely old barn. It was the delightful situation of the building, just outside Melbourne, that first drew the owners to the property, which they bought

and converted into their family home 12 years ago.

“It was the location that appealed to us. The barn has fantastic views,” said the owner. “You can look as far as the eye can see, right into the Derbyshire Peak District.” The owner of Riding Bank Barn has a passion for breathing new life into old buildings. This was his second conversion project. “This building was part of the Melbourne Hall estate and was built around 1875,” he explained. “Originally it was a storage barn for fruit – the land around here was planted out with pear and apple trees that were ploughed up years ago.”

Artist Sue Macgregor and her husband Paul have gone to great lengths to create a beautiful interior in keeping with the style and grace of their Victorian farmhouse

“I am a huge fan of the Arts and Crafts period in house design and I suppose that is the kind of style we have tried to give this house.”

The owner loves the natural light that floods into her conservatory. She is currently doing an MA in contemporary art and admits that this room is perfect as a very fine studio for her work. “I have got an old pine dining table, which doubles very nicely as a work table. I love spending time

in there,” she said.

Ask Sue about the rest of the fabulous home she and husband Paul have created and her the passion is never in question. The couple bought the 19th century farmhouse 15 years ago and set about painstakingly and lovingly transforming it into the breathtaking property it is today. “It is just a beautiful house,” she said. “When I first saw it I was struck by its serenity. It is so quiet here.” The main part of the house was built in 1860 and further additions were made in later years. “When we bought it, the house had not been decorated since the 1970s, so we stripped it back to the bare bones,” said Sue.

Gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh is a man who likes some order in his life - and away from the hectic world of TV presenting, his Hampshire

garden offers him just that. “My garden’s relatively formal,” he admits. “I like good lines in the garden and my house lends itself to a bit of formality. There’s quite a lot of clipped box and yew, but as you get further away from the house it winds and bends a bit more and is more informal.“It has good hard lines, with overflowing borders with perennials, lavenders and all kinds of plants. I do like order. I have to stop myself from being OCD but, that said, within hard lines I do like areas where plants can billow and bubble out.

Alan says such rigid order has an extremely calming effect on him. “The garden has always been an oasis. There are some great sweeps of lawn. I love lawn. I love the moronic task of mowing and the fact that I know I’ll have to do it again next week. It’s lovely that I can create strips – it gives me a sense of order and calm.”

The one-acre garden surrounds his old Georgian farmhouse, where he lives with his wife, Alison, his cat, Spud, half-a-dozen chickens and six quails.

He’s tried to create a garden that is in-keeping with the farmhouse, but which is not too regimented, he says. It’s crammed with sumptuous fruit and vegetables like apple, pear and plum trees, and there’s also a small vegetable patch where he grows onions, climbing French beans, courgettes, carrots and parsnips.“I’ve not gone to the point where I don’t have anything in the garden which isn’t Georgian, but it does look comfortable with the house.”

Titchmarsh, 60, who has his own ITV1 chat show and is soon to begin filming a new BBC series, Alan’s Garden Secrets, has an even more important family project in hand. He’s growing several varieties of lilies for his eldest daughter Polly’s wedding in July.

Family is all-important to the seasoned horticulturist, who dotes on his two grown-up daughters, Polly and Camilla.“When you get to my time of life, you’ve worked out what’s really important to you and what you really love. I’m very close to my family. I’ve worked for 45 years now and been to a heck of a lot of places.“I don’t think anything would persuade me to go and work abroad for three months. It just couldn’t match what I’ve got at home. I’m not driven by fame or fortune to that degree.”

Of course, with his busy TV schedule, hosting his own chat show, recently co-presenting Popstar To Operastar with Myleene Klass, and filming his new series Alan’s Garden Secrets, he doesn’t spend as much time as he’d like in his own garden. “Like everybody else who is working, I’m able to get into the garden in between working, which is usually part of every day.”

He’s reluctant to expose too much of his own personal space to the TV masses, so you won’t see pictures of his garden or house on the screen.

When he was the main presenter of Gardener’s World, he allowed cameras into his old garden, Barleywood, a couple

“I like good lines in the garden and my house lends itself to a bit of formality. There’s quite a lot of clipped box

and yew, but as you get further away from the house it winds and bends a bit more and is more informal.”

of miles away, but when he moved to his present house seven years ago he decided not to allow filming there. “When we moved from Barleywood I said this one’s ours. We’d had so many years of having camera crews in the garden most days and I felt I owed it to myself and my family to have a private garden.”

He is, however, working on a book about his garden so people can see pictures of it. “The difficulty is that I love sharing it. If you have something coming out, you want to say, come and look at this! But it’s been nice to have used my present garden as an oasis rather than a workshop.”The son of a plumber, Titchmarsh grew up in the Yorkshire Dales and worked as an apprentice gardener with Ilkley Council before studying horticulture at several colleges and later gaining a place at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, where he both studied and worked before pursuing a career in gardening journalism.

He presented Gardener’s World for seven years and Ground Force for six, but won’t comment on the news that Gardener’s World is to return to its roots after its youthful relaunch proved a ratings failure. “I can’t comment on that because I haven’t watched it enough and neither would I comment on fellow gardeners’ and gardening broadcasters’ work any more than I would hope they would want to comment on mine. It’s for the public to say what they think and for the viewing audience to vote with their eyes or not and I don’t really want to comment, except to say that I think gardening programmes do need to be lucid and clear and instruct. But I don’t think it’s my place to criticise current regimes.”

He’s also quashed rumours that he is returning to the show, although he will be presenting a new BBC series,

Alan’s Garden Secrets, in the autumn, demonstrating how to recreate some of Britain’s show-piece gardens. “At the moment I have no plans to return to Gardener’s World. It filled thirty-odd weeks of the year and it was in my garden when I did it so there’s a lot of preparation to do.”

“We’d film on the Friday for the following Friday, with a week’s worth of preparation to get everything ready so it’s all in place to do on a Friday, so it’s a big commitment.”As well as a keen horticulturist and broadcaster, he has also made a name for himself as an author of many gardening books and has just added another five titles to his latest series, How To Garden, three autobiographies and a string of romantic fiction novels, including Mr MacGregor, Love And Dr Devon and Folly.

He’s also working with the RHS, providing funds to give grants to primary schools to make gardens and nature areas and has so far funded more than 500 gardens.“It’s good to put something back,” he says simply.

He writes in a converted stone barn next to the house, overlooking the garden, and you’ll often see him standing looking out of the skylight above his desk. He also does some writing at his second home in the Isle of Wight. He has help from two gardeners who help maintain a further 35 acres of field and wood beyond the old house at Barleywood, which has been kept as a nature reserve, and a further three acres on top of his acre of garden surrounding the existing house, which contains a wild flower meadow and avenues of beech trees.

“Being out there and pottering about has got more important to me as I’ve got older,” he continues. “I find great solace in it. I like being a part of nature.”

“When we moved from Barleywood I said this one’s ours. We’d had so many years of having camera crews in the garden most days and I felt I owed it to myself and my family to have a private garden”

The London Knowledge From the throbbing atmosphere of the city centre,

filled with hope and aspiration, to the near rural tranquillity of the leafy suburbs, life in Britain’s capital

is most certainly varied. With the enormous diversity of lifestyles comes an almost overwhelming selection of premium homes, says Dean Heaviside, of prime property specialists Fine.

From stunning penthouse apartments overlooking the River Thames, exquisite period properties on historic streets and bright executive homes on leafy resi-dential avenues - Fine’s selection of city properties offers a full spectrum to suit all London lifestyles.

It seems living the London life is an attractive offering, and for good reason. A city enveloped in style, business, entertainment and culture, people flood to London from far corners of the earth to experience the London lifestyle. We explore exactly what the capital city has to offer, bring-ing you our pick of the best haunts around town.

City Nights

The glittering lights of London are always switched on, no matter what your taste in nightlife. With an eclectic mix of bars, pubs, music and entertainment venues, you will spoilt for choice.

From rock concerts at the O2 Academy to intimate gigs at the ultra cool Tabernacle at Notting Hill, the music scene of London is bursting with choice and energy.

Why not get a real taste of old London and spend an evening in one of the cities traditional atmospheric pubs? We love The George in Borough. Dating back to 1542, this is the only remaining galleried coaching inn in London, thought to have been frequented by Shakespeare himself.

For a taste of contemporary London, experience the sights and sounds of world-class DJ sets at some of Britain’s most famous bars and clubs scattered throughout the city.

Or for a more sophisticated taste of the London social scene, venture into the heart of Knightsbridge and spend an evening at the exclusive Blue Bar, a chilled-out venue with a striking interior designed by David Collins. Enjoy a range of personally recommended wines and whiskies while taking in the utterly unique surroundings where the white onyx bar and black crocodile print leather floor combine with listed features from the original Berkeley of Berkeley Square.

Culture Capital

From art exhibitions to fashion shows, dance events to west-end musicals, and stand-up comedy to live cabaret, London arguably has a more diverse and energetic cultural scene than any other city. There is always an exhibition to visit, event to take part in, or show to watch, that’s what London life is all about.

Admire the canvasses painted by the greatest artists of our time at The Tate Britain or The National Gallery, and revel in the delights produced by up and coming artists in artist exhibitions dotted around the city.

Take in the wonders of the trend-setting capital of the world during a host of never-ending fashion events. From London Fashion week to the alternative fashion week held at Spitalfields, the latest looks of London are never far from making a direct impact on the worldwide fashion scene.

Be the first to experience the latest theatre productions and celebrated musicals to step onto London’s West End. We highly recommend the sequel to the great Phantom of The Opera, Love Never Dies, showing at the Adelphi Theatre until October 23rd 2010.

“World-renowned for its fast pace of life, cutting edge industry, diversity of culture and unadulterated glamour, London Life is an enticing prospect.”

Park Life

Relax and while away an afternoon in one of the many Royal parks, botanic gardens or common greens, each the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, and always a short distance from wherever you are in the city.

At the heart of London park life is the festival fun that goes on annually throughout the city. From food festivals to music festivals, and dance festivals to drama festivals, the capital city certainly knows how to celebrate. There is even a festival to celebrate the parks themselves. Love Parks Week, from the 21st July - 1st August is a perfect excuse to spend a day in the park - if you needed one.

Shopping Haven

A shopping mecca, London offers a treasure trove of retail outlets for every taste. Delve into the hidden boutiques scattered throughout Covent Garden, take a step back in time to explore the world of vintage on Brick Lane, haggle at Camden Market or revel in world-renowned tailoring on Saville Row.

If it is gourmet food shopping you are after, why not pay a visit to Harrods where the freshest of food can be found in the most decadent surroundings, or pay a visit to one of the cities independent boutique-style grocers - we love Neals Yard Dairy in Covent Garden.

Dining Out

Whatever your taste, London has a five star restaurant to provide just that. Whether you prefer Thai, Indian, Italian, or British in an indoor restaurant, outdoor restaurant or fast food restaurant, London has something for you available 24 hours seven days a week.

For a touch of al fresco extravagance, pay a visit to Babylon restaurant at The Roof Gardens in Kensington where you can dine100ft above London at the award-winning establishment that boasts a garden of fully grown trees, water features and wildlife. A ‘simply must’ for the summer, Babylon even offer a barbeque menu from May 2010. For bookings go to www.roofgardens.virgin.com.

Londons hotels are not exclusive to tourists. From The Ritz to the Waldorf, the choice of gourmet treats and dining sensations within London hotels is unbelievable. Enjoy a Chefs table with Gordon Ramsay at Claridges or Afternoon Tea at the Lanesborough where the array of indulgences and personal tea sommelier service are certain to lead you straight into temptation.

When the Aspins bought their six bedroom home it was only partly renovated.

But today it is a modern day haven with every comfort - and where the living is

definitely easy

“The pond and stream, waterfalls and slate paths are complemented by mature trees, stone steps cedar decking and thoughtful lighting.”

Sitting around the supper table with friends on the terrace overlooking the garden, John and Judy Aspin relax knowing their six bedroom home has everything they and their guests need. Thinking back over their time here they realise the house has come a long way since they bought it partly renovated six years ago.

“We liked the feel of it and could tell what it could become,” said John. “It really is beautiful now.” John remembered they loved the location of the house, tucked away down a drive, secluded by trees and hedges. It was the perfect place for a couple or family who wanted privacy and seclusion only a few minutes drive from the vibrant city of Nottingham. “It was hard work but with a good architect and a team of local craftsmen we were able to transform it in two years,” he added.

Spectacular views across the boats in the marina and out to sea is what makes

“I understand from locals that it was regarded as the grandest property in Torquay.”

Relaxing on the balcony over a sunrise breakfast and enjoying the breathtaking views of Torquay harbour is what owner Christopher Miller enjoys most about his fabulous home. He bought his three-storey apartment just over three years ago, when the conversion of Sovereign House into 12 luxury apartments had just been completed.

“The views are simply amazing and can change so dramatically with whatever the weather is doing,” said Christopher. “Living here is like being at one with the elements.”

For sailor and boat owner Christopher, the apartment’s prime location also has the added advantage of enabling him to keep an eye on his catamaran which is moored in the harbour. “The location was what first attracted me to the property,” he said. “I have my own boat and being able to pick out its masts from among all the other boats out there was very appealing.”

Whether spending a quiet evening at the baby grand piano or playing with

“It had a lovely atmosphere with high ceilings, attractive cornices and a style that would suit traditional furniture.”

The couple, who moved to the house about nine years ago to be close to friends, have enjoyed the space and comfort of their Regency style home and have found the new house has offered them traditional character as well as comfort. “We were visiting our friends in Mansfield when we noticed someone was building these

properties,” the owner recalled. “We pulled over to have a look and were really impressed.

“We liked the Regency style and they seemed to be very well built homes that were extremely light and airy. The doors inside were half-glass, which added to the feeling of bright spaciousness.”The couple were also keen on the location of Burley House. “It was fabulous having the pool when the girls were young and they often used to have friends over for pool parties.”

If you asked owners of Extra Cover, Chris and Jill Locke, what makes their home really special, they would say the glorious hall. When they first entered the property 29 years ago it was the fabulous staircase and vaulted ceiling that took their breath away.

“At the time, my two daughters were just 11 and 13, but when I saw the splendour of the staircase, I could imagine them both in their wedding gowns walking down it,” admitted Jill. Her vision has since become a reality - and the family has really made the most of this light and airy space, with its marble flooring and a galleried landing.

“In fact, we love the whole house, which is very attractive from the outside,” added Jill. “We particularly like its position and location.”

In his latest cookery book, Antony Makes It Easy, the 58-year-old wants to prove that producing home-cooked food is just as simple as heating up a pre-

packaged meal. The father-of-four, who regularly shows off his culinary skills on TV programmes including This Morning, explains: “The recipes here are what I would call real food, food that for the most part doesn’t come out of any packets in ready-assembled, part-cooked ingredients. It’s food that you can cook easily from scratch.”

To see if Worrall Thompson’s book lives up to the promise, we put three of its recipes to the test.

Deciding on which ones to pick is tough. With 120 dishes on offer - all of which look thoroughly appetising, it’s hard to pick just three. After finally plumping for Roast Butternut Squash, Twice Baked Potato and the Warm Chocolate Nonsense pudding, it’s time to see just how easy the recipes are.

There are two sets of ingredients for each recipe. While both sets are necessary for the dishes, Worrall Thompson has divided the ingredients into those which he thinks you’ll already have and those which will require a quick trip to the shops. So, for example, for the Warm Chocolate Nonsense, Worrall Thompson presumes you’ll have 250g of dark chocolate in the cupboard but that you’ll need to buy whipping cream.

This way of separating ingredients, while novel, is slightly unnecessary as everyone’s cupboards will be stocked with different products. So having visited the local supermarket to buy most of the ingredients, it’s time to get going.

First up is the Roast Butternut Squash with Savoury Ricotta. The butternut squash needs to be cooked for 50 minutes, and the ricotta mixture for the dish doesn’t take long to make. While it sounds simple enough, there’s a problem: The recipe requires a food processer and without one there’s a need to improvise. Luckily, a blender is just as effective.

Once the cheese mixture is added to the butternut squash and put back in the oven for 15 minutes, the finished dish comes out looking not all that different from the picture of Worrall Thompson’s version.

The second dish - the Twice Baked Potatoes is just as simple to make, but with the potatoes requiring an hour plus in the oven it’s not a quick meal to make. By using fresh ingredients, though, it’s a great alternative to buying frozen alternatives.

Finally it’s time to try the Warm Chocolate Nonsense. With chocolate, butter, caster sugar and whipping cream included it’s not the healthiest of desserts but as a one-off treat, it’s not only delicious but quick and easy to make, however once in the oven it’s worth keeping an eye on the pots so the puddings don’t overcook.

An overwhelming success we say. They may not be as quick as a microwave meal but they do taste far, far better.

Why not try them out for yourself?

“The recipes here are what I would call real food, food that for the most part

doesn’t come out of any packets in ready-assembled, part-cooked ingredients. It’s

food that you can cook easily from scratch.”

More ideas: If Gorgonzola is not to your liking, replace it with 25g/1oz grated Parmesan.

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.2 Arrange the butternut squash, cut-side up, on a

roasting tray. Drizzle with 2 tbsp olive oil, sprinkle with 1/2 tbsp rosemary and season. Place in the oven and cook for 50 minutes until roasted and caramelized.

3 Meanwhile, in a mini food processor, blend the remaining rosemary, parsley, garlic, chilli flakes and nutmeg to a paste then, with the machine running slowly, add the remaining olive oil. Pour into a bowl and mash together with the ricotta, mozzarella and Gorgonzola, then check the seasoning.

4 When the butternut squash is cooked, remove from the oven and fill the cavities with the cheese mash. Return it to the oven and cook for 15 minutes.

Serve with a green salad.

Store Cupboard4 large baking potatoes, scrubbed1 tsp salt1/2 tsp ground white pepper175g/6oz unsalted butter, softened1/4 tsp grated nutmeg3 large egg yolks

Shopping List75ml/21/2fl oz double cream1 tbsp snipped chives

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Bake the potatoes on a rack over a roasting tray for about 1¼ - 1½ hours until the skins are crisp and the flesh is soft. Remove from the oven.

2 When the potatoes are cool enough to handle, cut a lid off the top of each potato (about one-third of the potato). Scoop out all the flesh from the body and lid, leaving the crisp shells intact. You can discard the lid.

3 Mash the potato until smooth, then fold in the salt, white pepper, butter and nutmeg and combine well. Fold in the egg yolks, cream and chives.

4 Spoon the potato mixture back into the potato shells, fluff up the tops and return to the oven for 20-25 minutes.

Shopping List90ml/3fl oz whipping creamcrème fraîche for servingnibbed or crushed almonds for serving

More ideas: Pour the mixture over 2 sliced bananas before baking.

1 Preheat the oven to 130C/275F/Gas 1. In a heatproof bowl set over barely simmering water

(but not touching) melt the chocolate and butter. Stir to mix well and remove from the heat. Leave to cool a little then gently fold in the egg yolks, one by one.

2 In a very clean glass bowl whisk the egg whites with an electric hand whisk to soft peaks, then add the caster sugar and whip until stiff and glossy. In another bowl whip the cream to ribbon stage (thick but not standing to attention).

3 Fold the cream into the chocolate, then fold tablespoonful of egg whites into it as well to loosen the mixture. Fold in the remainder of the egg whites.

4 Pour the chocolate mixture into 4 ovenproof gratin dishes, shallow rather than deep. Bake for 8 minutes, until the mixture is warm and has developed a crust: you’re not waiting for it to set. Sprinkle with almonds and icing sugar and serve immediately with a dollop of crème fraîche.

Character building

Admiring the view from the sun room or entertaining friends and family in the spacious kitchen/dining room, Cheryl Capstick reflects on how much Chantersluer Cottage has changed since she first set eyes on it. Believed

to have been built about 100 years ago, Chantersluer Cottage was originally a farm labourer’s house on the estate of the neighbouring farm. Over the past 40 years, the couple have substantially extended and remodelled the property, and completely refitted the interior. “We also knew we could extend it and we could make it exactly how we wanted it inside. It was the location that was so good. The views are spectacular. It’s quiet and surrounded by fields,” said Cheryl.

Transforming a farm worker’s cottage into a fabulous family home in rural Surrey has been a 40 year labour of love for builder Ronald Capstick and his wife Cheryl

“It’s a very peaceful and relaxing house, and it’s great for a family. On occasion we’ve looked at one another and said ‘we are really lucky to live here’.”

Situated just outside the village of Leigh, this delightful four bedroom cottage provides three reception rooms, a kitchen/breakfast room and wonderful rural views. Amid its 5 acres (STMS) of grounds, including paddock and formal gardens, there is a detached annexe, swimming pool and pool house as well as a four bay car port and workshop.

A taste of Italy

As a child he visited the beautiful six bedroom property on numerous occasions, marvelling at its enormous rooms and enjoying exploring its grounds. As an adult he attended weddings and social occasions there,

appreciating its unique character and almost Mediterranean charm.

So when he heard Roccabella Place, in Cambridgeshire, was on the market, the current owner decided to return to Britain to buy it – even though, at the time, he had no plans at all to leave his home abroad. “It was such an incredible house that I felt I had to take the opportunity to buy it while it was there,” he explained.

Just the ticket

Strolling along the Cole Green Way, which is part of the Lea Valley Walk, Catherine Bishop and her family look forward to their picnic in the sunshine. Over the past 15 years, since she first moved here, she has enjoyed being able to wander out of

her home and along the disused rail track that is now a renowned beauty spot. “It is so quiet here at home and it is very pretty down where the old station was,” she explained. “This has been a lovely place to live.” Catherine and her husband first moved to the location 15 years ago. Their plan was to completely renovate and extend the property that stood on the site and dated back to the mid-60s. It was to have a new look inside and out. “We were first attracted by the garden,” she said. “It was about an acre and was really very lovely.

Welsh beauty

As she sits in the sunshine out on the stone terrace, looking out across the

stunning Welsh valleys, Janice Meeson absorbs her peaceful surroundings and

listens to the birdsong coming from the trees. The magnificent views from

Maendy Uchaf, together with the character of the beautiful old 1800s’ farmhouse, are

what drew her to this serene location nearly 10 years ago.

Today she delights in the location of the house as much as she did a decade ago and

takes pleasure in the air of relaxation that permeates her home. Maendy Uchaf, at

Lower Machen, was once part of the old Tredegar Estate. Nestling in three acres, with

a stable block and space to keep horses.

Nestling in the picturesque Welsh countryside, Maendy Uchaf looked like it had always been part of the landscape, and Janice Meeson knew this was where she wanted to live

Beyond the sea

Nothing could ever be better than the view out across the water for Stuart and Michelle Smith and their family. The couple fell in love with the Edwardian house, which dates back to 1912, as soon as they saw it about

12 years ago. They loved the sea views from its windows and garden, and found that the well proportioned rooms and high ceilings instantly felt like home.

“We could imagine ourselves living here straight away - and it has been perfect,” said Michelle, who always gets up a few minutes early so she has time to take her first cup of tea back to bed. “We love watching the sun rising over the sea from the bedroom. You can see the pier, which I really like, and if you move slightly you can see only sea. “It’s lovely watching all the different types of weather through the year. The light is just gorgeous.”

Lying in bed watching the sun rise over the water or gazing out at the horizon with their children, looking for boats, the Smiths have enjoyed life by the sea

“We’ve got decking just outside with a table and chairs making this a lovely spot, which is great for barbecues.”

Dream come true

Standing on the terrace of his riverside home, watching the kingfishers swooping over the water, the owner of Cullum House recalls his long relationship with the unique country home. It was back in 1948 that he first saw the picturesque

property and decided that one day he would live there.

“I used to come down to this area to help with the threshing in my school holidays,” he remembered. “I saw the old cottage on one of those visits and said to myself: ‘One day I will have that place!’” Years later he became friends with the owner of Cullum House and over a game of golf discovered he was planning to sell up. “He was off to the States and so we did the deal right there. We shook hands on the sale of the house on the golf course - without it ever coming on to the market,” he said. “I still wanted to buy it as much as ever.”

As a boy he told himself that one day he would live in the picturesque country cottage – as an adult he transformed it into a fabulous five bedroom retreat with riverside views

“Everyday we wake up to the most beautiful views.”

A touch of Provence

But an unscheduled stop, followed by a stroke of luck, saw the couple’s story take an unexpected twist - and now, as they prepare for the next chapter in their tale, they agree life at Stoneway House has been very happy indeed.

“We were moving from Oxford to find some good, clean air and had found a home near Malvern, but it fell through,” explained Peter. “We were passing through this area on the way back and decided to stop for a cup of coffee - and just happened to see this house in an estate agent’s window with a sold subject to contract sign on it. “We knew we would love it and so went in to say that if it fell through we were interested. Three days later we had a call to say that had happened. Two and a half weeks later, we were in.

Peter and Suku Weaver relax next to their swimming pool, looking out across the breathtaking, tranquil Wye Valley - and reflect on how they could so easily have been living somewhere else

“Everything is calm and the valley glistens in the early morning light. It really is awe-inspiring and uplifting, and I feel it has been a real privilege to have lived here.”

English legend

Relaxing in the secluded garden as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play around her, the owner of The Priory reflects on the 55 years she has spent at her historical country home. Here she has watched her family grow

up and has enjoyed many happy occasions as they have returned time and time again to stay with her at the 11 bedroom property.

“It has been the perfect family home for us. We bought it because it was right for us at the time – and it has been a lovely place to live ever since then,” she said. “We loved everything about it when we first saw it, from all its fantastic character through to the wonderful space it offered.”

Spring blossom, Autumn leaves

As the sun sets, Brian and Patricia Prime wander round their Gimingham garden admiring the leaves on the trees and the delicate colours of the blossoms. The superb garden was the reason they first bought their five-

bedroom, detached Norfolk home. Initially, the property, which they have renovated throughout, was used a holiday home at weekends.

In recent years, however, they have been able to make the most of all it offers by living there full-time. “As soon as I saw it I was taken with it,” remembered Brian. “I loved the look of the house from the outside and it had the most superb gardens.”

Gazing out from his five-bedroom home, as the sun streams through the trees, Brian Prime loves to watch the changing colours of his peaceful Norfolk garden

By the silvery light

Leaning against his warm Aga or sitting in a sunny spot in his kitchen and watching the birds out in the garden, it’s easy for owner Stephen Bolton to enjoy the relaxed ambience of his family home.

But even returning to work either at the kitchen table on his laptop or heading into the study is little hardship as the house has such a wonderful feel, he said.

“I love working from home,” he admitted. “I can open up the double doors while I work and let a gentle breeze blow through the house, which is wonderful.”

Gazing at the stars from the balcony or relaxing by the pool on a clear, summer’s night, there’s something very special about the tranquillity of Hunters Moon

“Another attraction is the heated outdoor pool, which is in frequent use during the summer months.”

Aged to perfection

Sipping a cool drink in the garden or unwinding by the fire – there’s something about The Folly that makes everyone instantly relax. It could be the mature gardens with views over open countryside or the character of the house itself,

with its exposed beams and quarry tiles. Owner Mike King first fell in love with the 300 year-old property when he saw the grounds, with their mature trees, one acre paddock (STMS) and generous garden, more than seven years ago. Once inside the family-sized home, he was instantly attracted to its welcoming, cottage-style feel. “It’s one of those houses that just feels right,” he explained. “It is set on its own - once you drive through the gate it’s your own little world.”

Natural selection

From her daughter’s camping parties in the garden to occasions with family and friends in the spacious drawing room, Elaine Dixon has 16 years of happy memories of her character-filled home. The Dixons moved here from the

nearby village of Stoke-by-Nayland when their daughter was two. They wanted a family home that combined the country lifestyle they enjoyed but was closer to the vibrant town of Colchester. “One of the things that attracted us was the position,” Elaine said. “It’s also a really pretty house and has a fantastic magnolia tree in the front garden and a lovely eyebrow window. “This is a really sunny house with large, mature gardens that provide the ideal outside area for our young daughter. We knew it was the house for us as soon as we walked in the door.”

With honeysuckle and clematis rambling above the front door, Elaine and Keith Dixon’s home sits beautifully alongside the majestic oaks in their garden

“The character really appealed to us. It has original leaded light windows and a large drawing room with an open fireplace.”

To the manor barn

Basking in the sunshine in the pretty courtyard or gathering apples, plums and cherries by the basketful, life at Manor Barn today often revolves around the magnificent courtyard garden. Indeed it was the beautiful outdoor space that

caught the eye of owners Janet and Jeff Richley when they first went to visit the exquisite barn more than 11 years ago. “We were looking for a home that was a bit different but didn’t have any preconceived ideas about exactly what it was we wanted,” explained Janet. “The barn was unique and something about it just felt right. “It was a lovely, lovely building with lots of space and light but it was the garden that first caught my eye. As soon as I saw it I fell in love with it and knew that this was where I wanted to live.”

The Richleys had no clear idea of what they wanted, but knew it had to be unique – and when they saw beautiful Manor Barn with its lovely garden, they knew they had found it

Golden opportunity

Watching a glowing sunset framed by the windows of the spacious drawing room is one of many delightful pastimes at Jubilee Cottage, according to owner Laura Howarth. Opening up two rooms into one

created a free-flowing, light-filled living area within the 18th century cottage. “The drawing room is just such a lovely big space and very light. I think that was the feature that we most liked when we first saw Jubilee Cottage,” Laura said. Laura and Stephen moved into Jubilee Cottage eight years ago. As well as being a lovely example of a traditional stone built country home, its location on the edge of Hough-on-the-Hill immediately appealed. “I was particularly drawn to the lovely secluded garden and the fact that you can see the church on the hill.”

There is plenty to celebrate about Jubilee Cottage, Laura and Stephen Howarth’s stone-built 18th century property, which has a stylish and contemporary interior

“The lovely light and airy rooms, the size of the house, and all the lovely times we’ve had sitting out in the garden are what I’ll remember most.”

Thatch made in heaven

Looking out of the kitchen window in the morning to watch the birds and heading out into the garden after lunch to pick fresh fruit, Thatched Cottage has been a rural idyll for Mary Epsom’s family for decades. The fairytale house, which is Grade

An exquisite, picturesque property, the very traditional looking thatched cottage is something of a landmark in the area, she explained. “We came here 34 years ago and I have always enjoyed living here. What I love most is its position. The cottage is surrounded by fields and has the most wonderful views out across the countryside,” she said. “I can also look out from the house and watch all the wildlife, which I love.”
