Transcript of Fine Chemistry Services Expands high-Pressure Reaction Capabilities
Albemarle has a history of safely developing, scaling up and running
high-pressure reactions with materials such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide
and ethylene. In order to meet increased cGMP and non-cGMP customer
demand and grow our capabilities, our Fine Chemistry Services (FCS)
division recently invested in additional high-pressure reaction equipment and
expertise at two U.S. facilities. The result: even broader opportunities to
get exactly what you need from a relationship-driven organization
committed to your success.
The Enhancements
In early 2007, Albemarle modified a 6,000-gallon reactor at our Pasadena, Texas, plant to allow
NaK alkylations at pressures up to 1,000 psig. Later in 2007, we upgraded the existing
high-pressure hydrogenation capability at our Orangeburg, South Carolina, facility — a location
that has long manufactured bulk ibuprofen and other active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
Both sites have associated multi-state, high-efficiency distillation equipment and other supporting
process equipment, and can accommodate rail car service.
Greater Capabilities and Flexibility
With these recent enhancements, we’re now more equipped than ever to perform custom
reactions at high pressure and respond more flexibly to custom, non-cGMP high-pressure
requests. Albemarle FCS can now carry out hydrogenations at up to 1,080 psig, 300° C and up to
1,200 gallons in volume. In addition, we can perform cGMP carbonylation and alkylation reactions
at 1,000-gallon scale and pressures up to 400 psig, as well as non-cGMP,
multi-thousand-gallon-scale reactions at pressures from 500 psig to 1,000 psig.
High Pressure at Low Volume
Albemarle’s advanced capabilities even extend to a unique “high pressure lab” in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana, which allows us to demonstrate high-pressure and potentially hazardous reactions at
the 5- to 10-gallon scale, then quickly and safely move to commercial-size reactors.
More Expertise Across the U.S.
Albemarle’s South Haven, Michigan, site features cGMP manfacturing of APIs and advanced
intermediates for leading pharmaceutical innovators. Our Tyrone, Pennsylvania, facility provides
non-cGMP manufacturing services for cosmetics, specialty polymers, agricultural chemicals,
electronics, starting pharmaceutical materials and intermediates, and much more.
