As the UK’s leadingcontemporary realist,
Darren Baker hasenjoyed a level ofsuccess that most
artists only dream of.
Still in his early thirties, he hasproduced an impressive portfolio offigurative work and portraiture whichgraces many prestigious public andprivate collections around the world.
He has worked alongside andproduced paintings for such starsporting names as Lewis Hamilton,Steven Gerrard and Amir Khan, whilehis non-sporting portraits include HRH Prince Charles and Tony Blairwhich hang in St James’s Palace andDowning Street respectively.
For a young contemporary artist toachieve this kind of status andrecognition is extremely rare and canonly be put down to Darren’s uniquegift for naturalistic description.
The authenticity of his figures causesa momentary confusion in the vieweras each nuance is conveyed with suchaccuracy and truth that we findourselves questioning whether we arelooking at a beautiful photograph, oran extraordinary painting.

Safe as HousesIt is all too easy to be charmed by the quirky yet stylish harbour scenes ofSouth Western artist Rebecca Lardner.
But to look closely at these images isto glimpse a world of beam trawlers, long liners and crabbers; a thrivingcommunity, overlooked by painted orstone faced granite cottages. Ancient medieval harbour walls dividethe shore from the sea, and highlightthe natural curves of the classicEnglish harbour.
For Rebecca the proximity of the busysea and the safety of home is a major
source of inspiration. She draws thetwo elements together with adistinctive palette of sea colours, blues, greens, greys and teals, whichmake her work instantly recognisable. The unspoken contrast between theconstant activity of the harbour andthe watchful serenity of thefishermen’s cottages is in her ownwords, “a composition waiting to be realised.”

These monumental newcompositions fromSteve and Chris Rocksare breathtaking intheir scope andambition.Their atmospheric palette andextraordinary energy combine withtheir sheer size to create an awe-inspiring impact.
While the work of the Rocks brothersappears abstract, it is in fact highlyrepresentative. Each image is inspiredby the lie of the land - the contoursand colours rather than the literaldetails of the scene – so has its rootsin reality rather than imagination. As Steve explains: ”Creating this freeinterpretation of the landscape is bothchallenging and liberating. We paintwhat we see but it is an intenselypersonal shared vision.”

Impressions of Summeris Sherree’s exquisite
new collection ofCanvas Editions.
In these beautiful evocations of theperfect summer’s day, Sherreecontrasts the style and sophisticationof the social scene with gentlyaffectionate portrayals of childhoodinnocence. Two very different worlds, and this versatile artist proves herselfequally at home in both.
Over the last 30 yearsSherree has become thecountry’s premierimpressionist artist, a factthat was acknowledgedrecently when LaurenceLlewelyn-Bowen presentedher with an award for ’The UK’s leading ModernImpressionist’ at a red carpetevent in London. But although she is known mainly to hercollectors for her elegant society scenes andentrancing childhood images, Sherree recentlycame to prominence for her portraiture whenshe was invited to appear on the ChristmasSpecial of the hit TV series ‘To the ManorBowen’. Sherree was shown painting a superbportrait of Jackie Llewelyn-Bowen to make a pairwith one she had previously created ofLaurence. The famously flamboyant couple weredelighted that Sherree had seen past Jackie’spublic face to the softer reality, and agreed thatthe paintings brought a stylish touch ofauthenticity to their new country home.

Philip Raskin has developed apainterly impasto style; using thetexture of the paint and the shape ofthe brushwork, he gives each of hisluminous seascapes its own reality, rather than allowing it to be a smoothwindow onto a world beyond. With atrademark soft palette and dramaticskies, the overall effect magicallycaptures the textures, moods andchangeable light of his native Scotland.
Canadian-based Russian artist Maya Eventov uses a distinctivetechnique which combines impasto oilpainting and etching. By building upeach composition over several weeksshe creates a mesmerising vocabularyof texture and nuance. These atmospheric forest scenesvibrate with light and colour, and callto mind a stained glass window litfrom behind by dazzling sunlight.
Born and brought up in the SeychellesHarry Brioche was entranced by the“moody” skies he found in the UK andloves travelling around the countryphotographing and painting what hesees. Strongly influenced by suchmasters of the landscape as Turnerand Vernet, his stunning oils portraybeautifully lit scenes of the Britishcountryside, and he sums up his latestwork as “lighting the landscape”.

Her deceptively loose, impressionistic style disguises the intricacy of herbrushwork and the stylish formality of each composition. We responded by taking Rolf to ourhearts, and he soon becamesomething of an institution. His huge talent combined with his

Peter Knox has been described as a 21st Century Lowry – an artistchronicler of day-to-day life from a precious period of our history. He himself describes his work as representing a 'visual diary' of his life and experiences growing up in theNorth of England. His evocative industrial images are realistic but affectionate portrayals of a vanishing worldthat is linked to his personal ideas of family, friendship and childhood.

DUNCAN MACGREGOR
Duncan’s exhilarating seascapes have broughthim an extraordinary level of success over thelast few years. But his artistic relationshipwith the sea and particularly sailing is theunexpected result of a terrifying ordeal whenthe ocean nearly claimed his life on an epictrans-Atlantic voyage. Experiencing the powerand the terror of a protracted storm inspiredDuncan to start painting dramatic narrativesof life at sea which have won him animpressive international reputation. With hislatest collection however he has found histhoughts turning in a new direction, towardsthe reassuring guidance of the lighthouseleading sailors through the dangers that lie
close to the shore; his love of adventurefinally tempered by the appeal of safepassage into the harbour.
“Although I am painting actual scenes, I seewhat I do as interpretative rather than literal, and I have heard many people describe mywork as abstract. I paint around a subjectrather than transcribing it directly onto thecanvas, and I hope that the energy andvibrancy of each image brings the reality tolife for the viewer.”

The studio is located just yardsfrom where he set off on hisfinal voyage as a naval officer."The slipway that built andlaunched ships to explore thegreat wide oceans" says Philip,"is now the slipway for me toexplore the great ocean ofcreative expression."
Inside, the studio is a treasuretrove of hundreds of pastelpaints, lovingly cared for andmeticulously organised.
Starting on a new composition, Philip identifies the light sourcein each scene and begins withwhite and the more luminousrange of bright shades. With broad energeticmovements he covers the paper, gradually introducing darkercolours until a scene begins totake shape and eventuallysolidifies into a distinctive anddramatic seascape.

INTOXICATING… PASSIONATE…SEDUCTIVE…this is the kind of language usedby critics discussing Fabian’satmospheric portrayals of life afterdark in Buenos Aires. Yet the artisthimself recently described hisstunning figurative paintings as“romantic”. When questioned onthis unexpected choice of word heexplained: “It’s not the actualsubjects of my work that areromantic – it’s more about me, theartist. I am so often paintingremembered scenes and situations
from my childhood, at a time whenexperience had not yet taught methe ways of the world and I was aninnocent child. At this time I rarelyunderstood the implications ofwhat I saw on the streets or incertain unlawful establishments, and I believed I was looking atlove, affection, and genuineromance. In some ways I think Ipaint these sophisticated scenesthrough the admiring eyes of myyounger self; in my heart I’malways waiting, and hoping, for theromance to come back.”
“I develop my work in atime that, from my point
of view, is much moreromantic than the present
day. A time when a manwould take pride in fixinghis tie and women would
follow a routine of slowsensual movements which
could seduce a man justby lighting a cigarette.”
