I was talking to a former parishioner todayabout special moments in our lives that wefondly look back on with perhaps somenostalgia. For this elderly gentleman it wassinging in the choir at evensong as ayoung lad at Clapham Church. The doorwas open and a beautiful sunset floodedin, filling the church with a rosy eveninglight.

These days we rarely have eveningservices, except perhaps at Christmas andPassiontide. Dwindling numbers havemade them unviable. This was broughthome very recently when we celebratedAscension Day. At one time this wouldhave been regarded as an importantChristian festival with the expectation thatall Christians should try to get to church. But very few came to either of thecelebrations offered this year.

I guess we live in a very different world towhen the gentleman was a youngchoirister, and the rhythms of life are bothdifferent and the tempo is faster. Access totransport and family and friends spread farapart mean that Sunday evenings might bespent travelling or perhaps recuperatingfrom a day out. Seven day a weekshopping has contributed to makingSunday feel like just another day of theweek, perhaps a normal day of work forsome.

Setting nostalgia aside, I do wonder if as aChristian community we have lostsomething which is helpful to our lives.Patterns of worship are there to surroundour day in prayer and mark those timeswhen we can focus on some specificaspect of the Christian story. Of course, there are many churches that do not have

a Christian calendar and perhaps only offerone Sunday service. That the Church ofEngland does celebrate the festival andseasons continues an ancient tradition. There is good evidence that AscensionDay was celebrated in at least the 4th

century, so would have been part of the lifeof our three churches for as long as theyhave been standing. It would be a shame ifit died out in the 21st.

That said, the church does have to evolveand meet the challenges of living in a newcontext. Recently we enjoyed a very goodconcert in the church to raise funds for theVillage Hall. We have a new outreachservice on the first Sunday of the month, which will take place at 5pm during thesummer months. We are currently lookinginto the possibility of installing some audio-visual equipment to support this style ofservice. It will also be available for thecommunity to use as church is about thewhole of life, not just Sundays andfestivals.

By the time you read this we will have hada visit from members of our link parish inSchney, Germany. A full itinerary has beenplanned and we are very much lookingforward to having them stay in the villagefor five days commencing 14th June. Wewill let you know more about how this wentnext month.

Nine teams entered the 2nd StoolballTournament on Nepcote Green whichwas run by Findon church and theFriends of Findon Church. Weatheragain was kind to us.It's turning out to be a real Communityday, with seven teams from the villageand one from Clapham and Patchingand one from All Saints in the Valleytaking part in the competition. Allplayed three matches and the winningteam for the 2nd year running was the Findon Youth Club.If people weren't playing, they came to see the fun and to enjoy acup of tea and cake. The beef burgers and hot dogs sold welland the Friends made a profit of £400 for Church funds from the

refreshment stall. It is a day when all ages turn out, from 5year olds playing on the grass, to manyteenagers turning up and asking to play.Marigold Somerset who is into her 90'swas sitting at the side of the outfieldcheering on the Clapham and Patchingteam.A very big thank you to everybody whohelped either before or on the day, (toomany to individually mention). Hopefully the weather will have cheeredup by the time this article goes to print!Despite the dismal start to summer Ithink that ice-cream should always beon the menu, we are lucky to have theaward-winning Caroline's dairy as alocal supplier. The company has beenaround since 2008 and operates fromChalder farm near Chichester, usingtheir own milk to produce delicious ice-cream on site. We stock the mini potsand also the 500ml. Wow what an incredible Summer Revelsthis year! One of Findon Village's oldesttraditions, now dating back over 160 years, began at St John the Baptist CofE PrimarySchool on Saturday 18th May with achildren's procession to Pond Green led bythe traditional accordion player TomTownsend (on his 29th year)! The rain heldoff and the sun shone down as the childrenperformed their well-practised countrydancing watched on by many eagerparents and locals before making their wayback to the village school for the hugelypopular maypole dancing. The event wasthen officially opened by this year's popularWorthing Town Crier Bob Smytherson.Bob Smytherson also crowned this year'sbeautiful May queen and attendees –Freya as the Queen, with Ellie andRhianna as the attendees.Once opened, this year's Summer Revelssaw many hundreds attending raisingthousands of pounds for the charity StJohn the Baptist CofE PTA dedicated tosupporting the village school. With circusperformers, children's entertainers, bouncycastles, Total Wipeout, assault courses, giant slides, soft play zones, gardengames, candy floss, beer tents, pimms, bbq's (cooking Peckham Butchers finesthandmade burgers and sausages), theamazing Worthing steel band, the UK’sTop Extreme Mountain Bike Stunt Showand a whole host of village fete activities, itreally was a village tradition not to bemissed! The raffle and draw alone raisedmany hundreds and with generousdonations from The Gun, Sonos, LeedsCastle, Angmering Manor, Audi, SouthDowns Gun Club, Worthing Theatres, a ½tonne of horse manure with free delivery(!!!) and many many more, every winnerleft feeling very lucky! On top of this youcould even win a Porsche for theweekend!!! Unbelievably all of this was runsolely by volunteers, organised by the

village school's PTA with free admission toall! The St John the Baptist CofE PrimarySchool's PTA is an incredibly hardworkingcharity that works tirelessly throughout theyear organising various village events. Itencourages closer links between the localcommunity and school by organising socialactivities that not only raise funds but alsoprovide an opportunity for residents, parents, staff and pupils to get together. This also includes the Findon VillageFirework Fantasia, the Findon VillageCircus and the Findon Sheep FairRefreshments in previous years. Fundsraised by the PTA provide essentials andextras not already provided by the school’sbudget - most recently the school have justrenovated the entire outside garden areasinclusive of roly poly pig composters. Alongwith bee hives for the children to manage, some wonderful chickens, a complexnature trail, an all-weather canopy for theplayground, a beautiful greenhouseoverflowing in abundance with vegetables, herbs and stunning flowers, £1500 ofessential maths equipment and all thecoach transport to numerous trips, thesefundraising ventures really are a necessity! Our current projects are to improve on thecomplex nature trail with other wildlifehabitats, discuss plans for a new outdoorclassroom and to replace the IT Suite at acost of over £30,000!Following this year's Summer Revels thePTA team would therefore like to give ahuge thank you to all those whogenerously donated their time, gifts or thelending of their equipment to make theFindon Village School's Summer Revels2019 such a successful day and thechildren, school staff and everyone thatattended for producing such an incredibleatmosphere!- Sadie Collis, Chairman, St John theBaptist CofE Primary School PTA

Catherine YorkForty years ago in my early gardening daysmy garden finished flowering at the end ofJune. Everyone else’s gardens were stillfull of colour but mostly from beddingplants and I preferred something morepermanent. I started looking for plants thatflowered in July and came acrossJapanese anemone “SeptemberCharm”, pale mauve. Anemones are soeasy, preferring semi-shade (North or East)and have attractive leaves 2’ tall with flowerstems up to 5’ tall. They are unbothered bypests and diseases and flower for 10weeks between July and October. Palemauve is my favourite but I also grow white“Honorine Jobert”, two-tone deep pinkhupehensis “Hadspen Abundance”, andgorgeous semi double deep rose pink“Prinz Heinrich” (in a tub as it spreads tooquickly). Aster frikartii “Monch” wasanother wonderful find which I grow to thisday. This aster is disease free and issmothered in 2” lavender blue daisies witha yellow centre, again for 10 weeks fromJuly to October. I allow it to flop and itcreates a gorgeous specimen. It requires asunny site and well watering at floweringtime.Newly fashionable verbena “Bonariensis”is so beautiful, so easy and yet soworryingly invasive. We stood in a gardencentre looking at it when a young couplecame along. The wife told the husband,“Remember what we said; we will neverget another one” and they looked at itlongingly and then reluctantly walked away.I knew this meant it was trouble but webought it anyway. It was gorgeous; 4’ tall,

strong, square green stems widely spacedwith small lilac coloured pompoms fromJune to November and then attractive seedheads all winter. I couldn’t cut them downthey looked so interesting. I knew theconsequences. The following springhundreds of seedlings appeared, everywhere. Luckily, before I could facethe task of weeding them out, they grew to6” tall and the more vigorous ones hadalready swamped the weaker seedlings, and at 6” they fitted very nicely into ahuman hand and it was easy to pull out awhole handful at a time. I could see thewife’s face in my mind saying, “Rememberwhat we said”. I still grow them but withcare, cutting off the dead seed headsbefore they disintegrate and seedthemselves all round the garden.I grew hardy fuchsia “Mrs Popple” in theground for many years, making a 3’ bush ofthe crimson/purple variety. Sometimes, after a mild winter it would start getting itsnew leaves on the old stems before I hadchance to cut them down and then carry onuntil the frosts. “Mrs Popple” lookedparticularly good with pale blue asterfrikartii nearby, and low growing hebe“Pewter Dome” with its white flowersappearing just at the right time tocompliment the dark fuchsia. Now, I amtrying fuchsia “Dollar Princess” instead, which is similar in colour but more compactat only 18” tall. So far it has come throughthe winter unscathed and started floweringin mid June. It is hardy and has an awardof merit.

Is this the oldest Findon Pup?This is Quincy. He will be 16 on 14.7.19.I wonder if he is the oldest dog in the village?Perhaps other readers could send in photos oftheir elderly fur babies to find the oldest Findonpup?

Our visitors from SchneyDespite the mixed weather, we found a sunnyday during the visit of 14 guests from our linkParish in Germany! We enjoyed visiting Tarring Church as Part ofthe St Richard’s Trail organised by NancyFord, ending up in Chichester with someinformal worship at St Richard’s Shrine. That evening we had a great time at the BarnDance in All Saints Hall.

On Sunday, everyone joined us for a Service in Germanand English at Findon Church. After lunch, we had teain the pier, followed by a blustery walk! Schney is a longway from the sea, so our visitors love a trip to Worthingbeach. In the evening, the Black Horse provided a greatbuffet spread, while 8 mixed teams played skittles. Uteand Chrissie from Germany were the only ones to get all9 pins down!

Lesley Chamberlain led avisit to a beautiful Sussex garden, after which wevisited the Blue Idol, where a German speaking guideexplained about the Quaker movement. Weexperienced the tranquillity of this tradition with a shorttime of silence in the Meeting House, then shared apicnic in the peaceful gardens there. We plan a return visit to Schney in the October halfTerm, 2020. All are welcome!

We met in the Village Hall on Tuesday,11th June and were pleased to see thesun shining after a heavy downpour ofrain in the night. We celebrated theafternoon by holding a Strawberry Teaand approximately 20 of us sat at a longtable with bowls of strawberries andcream plus delicious scones which ourSecretary, Evelyn had made andstrawberry jam provided by Maria. Atthe start of the meeting, a report wasread from the Delegate whorepresented, Findon Valley,Findon Downs and Findon Village, andwho attended the recent Conference inBournemouth. After finishing thebusiness of the day, we were delightedto welcome three ladies from theSussex Police with Anna-Marie giving atalk on SCAMS. Sussex Policeintroduced Op Signature in 2014,focusing on vulnerable victims of fraud.Every year, the British public loses

billions of pounds to fraudsters whobombard us with online, mail, door-to-door and telephone scams. If you wantto stay on top of scams and up to dateabout crime prevention advice, visit theSussex Police website atwww.sussex.police. To name some ofthe things that can happen to any one ofus, always remember to lock yourdoors, windows and remember never toplace a bin under a window becausethis is an easy way for an intruder toenter your premises. There were somany subjects of SCAMS discussedand too many to write in this article. Our next meeting will be held in FindonVillage Hall on Tuesday, 9th July at2.30pm to 4.30pmSpeaker: Mr Bob Wragg, "Miscarriage ofJustice" You decide.Competition: A Rose. All visitors welcome - we look forward toyour visit.Jill Schiller Findon Downs WI-President

A cat owner asked us to take her cat asshe said the cat kept falling over thebalcony. The first time she broke hertail, the next time she injured her back, the last time she broke her palate. Thepoor cat is only two yrs old but afterhaving her tail removed and nowhaving trouble eating she will probablybe with us for some time.

The stray Bengal cat has not beenclaimed, she is getting fatter by the day.She was very thin when she arrived sowe hope it is just our good food and thatshe is not pregnant!

We had a phone call from a lady inCrawley who was sitting outside herhouse with her three cats. She told usshe had been evicted and could we helpher. We told her to bring the cats in. Shehad no money, and no car, so we toldher if she could get a lift we would payfor the petrol. The cats are beautiful, sofriendly obviously been well cared for.We said we would take care of them fora month, giving her time to findsomewhere to live. After that we wouldfind them a nice home together. Weasked her to sign them over to PAWSjust in case we never hear from heragain. We have to put a time limit on itnow because we have had cats left withus for up to a year with no money fortheir food.

A lady whose house had burnt downcame in with two cats. One of the catshad kittens a few days later. The Ladywas going to arrange to go into B&B.She had lost her phone in the fire, butsaid she would get in touch. We neverheard from her again. We had thekittens' injections done. One day shearrived while Sheila and I were out. She

told a Volunteer she had come for hercats and that we knew about it. Shetook the cats leaving us with the kittens, with not even a word of thanks or adonation.

Another left a cat for a couple of weeksafter being thrown out of her flatpromising to come back with somemoney for cat food as she had no cashon her just a card. A week later the cathad a kitten, the weeks turned intomonths. She rang out of the blue andsaid she was working in Devon butwanted her cat back. After a year, because were unable to contact her asshe never answered her phone, we re-homed the kitten and took the mummycat into a local Vet to have her spayed. The Vet put the scanner over the catwho was chipped. She rang the ownerand managed to get her to answer thephone. She said not to spay her and herMum would pick the cat up, and that herMum lived in Worthing.!!

I wanted to take this opportunity tointroduce myself and say a bit about what Iintend to do as tree warden for the village. It was following an advert in the FindonNews that I applied for the role, havingrecently moved to the area with my wifefrom Bath. I was working for the NationalTrust, in charge of the restoration of the18th century landscape garden Prior Park.In all I worked for the trust as a gardener ina variety of roles for 37 years. I havealways been interested in trees bothornamentally in gardens as well as in thecountryside and landscape.Trees are such a feature of the Englishcountryside it is easy to take them forgranted. They are under pressure andneed protection like never before. Climatechange, building development, agriculturalactivities and especially disease allcombine to make life difficult for trees. InFindon we are lucky in having good treecover on the whole, indeed West Sussex isreckoned to be the second best county fortree cover after Surrey. The role of tree warden is voluntary andinvolves taking an interest in what ishappening to trees in the neighbourhood, spotting opportunities for planting, lookingafter newly planted trees and discussing

issues residents might have concerningtrees. Wardens do not have any powers toenforce rules and regulations. Some treesare subject to Tree Preservation Ordersand it is especially important that they areprotected. Identifying which these trees areis proving particularly challenging. My aim in the next few months is tocomplete a survey of the village to recordwhat the current situation is, identifysignificant trees and monitor disease. Mostpeople are aware of the threat of AshDieback disease, a rampant fungal diseasewhich looks set to wipe-out large swathesof one of our most common species.Forecasts vary but many estimate that95% of Ash will be lost – a horribleprospect. The worst affected area roundFindon is Cissbury Ring where most Ashon the north side of the hill are affected. Itis important to monitor the spread andeffect of the disease, potentially there willbe many dangerous trees to be dealt with.On a brighter note, I intend to look for sitesin the village where new trees might beplanted. Roadsides, play-areas andperhaps privately owned areas might besuitable. If you have any issues or ideas you cancontact me at [email protected] Ward

Ash dieback (ADB) is a devastating disease thathas the potential to kill over 95% of West Sussexash trees over the next 10 - 20 years. As nearly21% of all broadleaved trees in West Sussex areash, this would have a major impact on thecounty’s landscape, wildlife and habitats.Although there is no treatment, a small percentageof ash may be resistant to, or tolerant of, theinfection. Survivors can be used for breedingtolerant ash trees for the future.West Sussex County Council is working withdistrict and borough councils, other organisations, and land owners to take a coordinatedapproach to mitigate potential health and safety risks. There is likely to be selectivefelling of ash trees and reactive work this summer. For more information visit the West Sussex County Council website

HMRC SCAM - What you need toknow• Action Fraud has experienced anincrease in the reporting of maliciouscalls and voicemails, to members of thepublic purporting to be from HerMajesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC).• Fraudsters are spoofing genuineHMRC telephone numbers to deceivetheir victims over the phone. Thefraudsters state that as a result of thevictim’s non-payment of tax or otherduty, the victim is liable for prosecutionor other legal proceedings in order tosettle the balance. The fraudsterssuggest victims can avoid this, byarranging payment to be madeimmediately by methods such as banktransfer or by purchasing iTunes giftcards.• If the victim is hesitant or refuses tocomply, the suspect makes a threatsuch as immediate arrest, sendingbailiffs to the victim’s address or, insome cases, deportation.• Often, the period for which the tax isallegedly due is distant enough toguarantee the victim will have little, ifany, paperwork or ability to verify theclaims. Once the money is paid thesuspects sever all contact with thevictim.• In genuine cases, HMRC will initiallymake direct contact with you viapost/letter and potentially follow up thatletter with a phone call at a later date.• If HMRC contact you via telephonethey will quote the reference number onthe initial letter you should havereceived. HMRC will not discusssomething you are not already aware of,like a tax investigation, and will NOTdemand immediate payment.

It is vital that the public exercisecaution when receiving messages ortelephone calls of this nature.

What you need to do• Always question unsolicited requestsfor your personal or financialinformation. Just because someoneknows your basic details (such as yourname and contact details), it doesn’tmean they are genuine. Instead, contactthe company directly using trustedmethods such as a known emailaddress or phone number.• Legitimate organisations wouldn’t askyou to pay taxes, bills or fees using aniTunes gift card, or any other type ofvoucher. If you’re contacted by anyonethat asks you to do this, you’re likely thetarget of a scam• Don’t be rushed or pressured intomaking a decision. Under nocircumstances would a genuine bank orsome other trusted organisation forceyou to make a financial transaction onthe spot.Report Phishing attempts. If you receivea call, text or email of this nature andhave not lost money, you can report thisas phishing to Action FraudStaying Safe Online Resources fromWest Sussex County CouncilKeep up to date with the latest onlinesafety advice by signing up to the freeStaying Safe Online E-Newsletter.This will share helpful tips, information, upcoming events, training and newseach month to help you and your familystay safe. Findon Village Pre school NewsIt’s been a busy summer term so far at Findon Village Pre-school. We had a sponsoredbike ride where the children were able to bring their own bikes and scooters from homefor the week. As you can imagine this caused great excitement from the children and asthe week went on, we extended their learning and physical development by addingramps, and chalk pathways with numbers etc that they had to follow. With all thechildren’s hard work and the generous support from their parents we managed to raiseapprox. £300.

The money we raised is going to really help uswith paying towards our garden makeover thatwe had done at the beginning of term. We arelucky to have some very clever dads Joshua Tutt(gardener) and Jake Riley (Tree Surgeon) thathave totally revamped part of our garden andturned it into a lovely naturally resourced area forthe children to play and explore. Also to finish itoff the “Men in sheds@Findon” have made us awonderful mud kitchen to go in our muddy areawhich staff and children are delighted with. Thiswill really enhance the children’s creative play

especially as the muddy area is one of their favourites to play in.We are now very busy learning new andold songs and making props and sceneryfor our end of year Summer concert in Julywhich is a time when our parents come towatch and we say goodbye to all ourchildren that are moving on to school. Wewill be holding a raffle so if anyone is ableto donate raffle prizes that would be verymuch appreciated. As some of you may be aware our preschool is in need of a new more modernbuilding and we are looking for funds, donations and other ways and ideas to helpraise money for the building. If you can helpin anyway with this matter please contact the Preschool.
