William Goldwin Carrington Howland was born in Toronto, Ontario, on March 17th, 1915. He enrolled in law atthe University of Toronto in 1932 after receiving his prepatory education at Upper Canada College. Howlandgraduated from the Honour Law Course with a B.A. and LL.B. in 1936, and afterwards enrolled in Osgoode HallLaw School. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1939. While at law school, he articled with the firm of Rowell,Reid, Wright and McMillan, and stayed on to practise law with the firm, which later became McMillan, Binch.Howland remained with the firm until 1975. Between 1942 to 1945, Howland served with the Royal CanadianArmy Service Corps, attended the 10th Canadian War Staff Course at the Royal Military College, and was postedas Staff Captain with the Canadian Army Pacific Force. When he rejoined the law firm after the war, he acted as ajunior for D'Alton Lally McCarthy, Q.C. Howland returned to Osgoode Hall Law School in 1950 as an honourarylecturer in mortgage law. He continued to teach until 1967. In 1955, he was appointed a Queen's Counsel.Howland was first elected a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1961, and would serve as its Treasurerfrom 1968 to 1970. Howland, as Chair of the Legal Education Committee, was involved in the negotiationsleading to the transfer of Osgoode Hall Law School to York University in 1968. He later served as President of theFederation of Law Societies of Canada in 1973 and 1974. In 1975, Howland was appointed a Judge to the Court ofAppeal, Supreme Court of Ontario. Two years later, he was appointed Chief Justice of Ontario, and remained inthis position until his retirement in 1992. As Chief Justice, he instituted and chaired the Bench and Bar Council,which regularly brought together representatives of the bench, bar and government to discuss and resolveproblems affecting the administration of justice in Ontario. As well, Howland chaired the Ontario Judicial Council,Ontario Courts Advisory Council, and the Council of Judges of the Supreme Court of Ontario. Howland alsoserved as the National President of the United Nations Association in Canada, and the University College Alumni-Association. He was a member of the Board of Governors for Upper Canada College, as well as a member of theSenate for York University. Howland received many awards and honours during his career, including honouraryLL.D. degrees from Queen's University, the University of Toronto, York University, The Law Society of UpperCanada, and an honourary D.Litt.S. from Wycliffe College. He was admitted as a Commander of the Order of St.John in 1984, was awarded the Order of Ontario in 1991, and the Order of Canada in 1992. Howland marriedMargaret Patricia Green, daughter of Kenneth Alfred Green on August 20th, 1966. "Patsy" Howland died inNovember 1992. William G.C. Howland died in London, England on May 13th, 1994.

Biographical/Sketch/Administrative History

Fonds consists of records created and maintained by William G.C. Howland. The fonds includes correspondenceand subject files relating to Howland's legal career, his affiliations with boards of professional organizations and hispersonal life; speeches made at the opening of the courts and other occasions; travel records including logs andphotographs; diplomas, awards and certificates; and photographs documenting his legal and military careers, aswell as a small number of personal photographs. Various architectural drawings of the interior and exterior ofOsgoode Hall, acquired by Howland while Treasurer of the Law Society, are also included in the fonds.

The records were moved from Howland's residence at 2 Bayview Wood, Toronto, Ontario on July 18, 1994, underthe supervision of the Archives' Manager, Ann-Marie Langlois.

There are nine diaries in total, detailing daily agendas, people and places encountered, and financialrecords of expenditures. Several include translations of basic phrases, and pronunciation guides, while othersinclude calculations of milage travelled. The diary which documents Howland's trip to Germany during thesummer of 1935 (file 994001-4-2) is especially detailed, including daily records of expenditure, addresses of thosehe stayed with, and notes which follow the rise of the Nazi movement, including conversations he had with localcitizens.
