In the November Director’s Note, I wrote about the community’s involvement in developing our new strategic plan. Over 7,000 people completed surveys and over 50 people participated in a full day community retreat to discuss the future of their Library.

I’m happy to report that we have reached the culmination of months of planning and the Library’s Board of Trustees recently approved the 2019-2023 strategic plan. This marks the beginning of what will be an exciting time in your Library’s history.

Over the course of the next several issues, I will use this message to focus on each of the six goals mapped out in the plan. Before doing that, I want to highlight your Library’s newly approved Mission, Vision, and Values. In many ways, these are most important because they inform the goals and provide the framework for everything we do.

Mission:The Library inspires, informs, and enhances connections across St. Charles County.

Vision: The St. Charles City-County Library is a catalyst for customers to build successful lives, families, and communities.

Values:We offer superior customer experiences. We encourage learning and discovery. We are inclusive and provide access to all.We cultivate collaboration and innovation. We believe in the freedom to know.We respect diverse perspectives. We foster a positive work environment. We are committed to the integrity and wise stewardship of resources.

I can’t say emphatically enough how pleased I am with this focus and with the direction set forth in the new strategic plan. Without a doubt, it is ambitious, and there is much work to be done. In the end, though, I truly believe we will see a library that lives its new vision as a catalyst for customers to build successful lives, families, and communities.

As we begin this challenging and exciting work - starting with our new and improved myLibrary Catalog - we thank you and look forward to seeing you at the Library!

From the French fiddlers of the fur-trading days to the rock and hip-hop icons of the present millennium, St. Louis has

long been a town rich in musical history. Though it has rarely been cited as a center of any music scene, any area that has been home to Chuck Berry, Miles Davis, Ike & Tina Turner, Grant Green, Pavlov’s Dog, Uncle Tupelo, Nelly, and Pokey LaFarge has clearly deserved more attention. This book tells the story of music in St. Louis, from the symphonic to the singer/songwriter, from the radio stations that propelled it to the fanzines that documented it, from the musicians who left here for greater fame to those who stayed and made this town more vibrant. This is the first time that all the tributaries of the great St. Louis river of song have been covered in one place: classical, jazz, blues, R&B, rock ’n’ roll, country, hip-hop, and more.

Steve Pick was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His life-long interest in music became an obsession when he co-founded Jet Lag magazine in 1980, then spent thirteen years reviewing concerts and writing a music column for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He began working in record stores in

1983, and played guitar in a handful of bands in the 1980s. From 1988 through 1993, and again from 2001 to the present, he has hosted a weekly radio show on KDHX-FM. In his lifetime, he has seen more than half the musicians in this book play live.

Amanda E. Doyle is a St. Louis transplant (via Memphis, Florida, and Mizzou) and ardent city resident. She got kicked out of her first concert (Delbert McClinton, at a dive bar in Memphis, where her dad smuggled her in on his shoulders) at age six, which began a lifetime of great shows

and diverse musical interests. She’s written for visitor publications in several cities and has authored five previous books, including 100 Things to Do in St. Louis Before You Die, Missouri Almanac 2018-2019, and Standing Up for Civil Rights in St. Louis. She lives with her husband, two children, a nutty cat, and an elderly Chihuahua in south St. Louis.

During Teen Fandom Con at the St. Charles City-County Library in 2018, the winner of the costume contest made his way slowly around the room, posing, smiling, and gesturing for more applause. The audience happily complied. A roomful of teenagers clapped and cheered as Daniel-Chase, age 19, basked in the glow of their admiration. Anyone watching would guess that his confidence and creativity, in cosplay and in life, had always been there. In truth, it took time...and the Library. Daniel-Chase has always loved the Library. He has early memories of attending events for children at different branches and picking out books for Grandma to read to him.

“I loved being able to take home new adventures,” he says.

As he got older, Daniel-Chase struggled with bullying and depression. He explains that he felt like an outcast. The Library became more than a fun place to spend time; it was one of the few places away from home where he always felt safe and comfortable. Eventually Daniel-Chase started attending teen events. “It wasn’t easy, but I was able to look forward to things that the Library offered, like movies and fan group meetups. I was getting out of bed and asking to leave the house.” Daniel-Chase especially enjoyed the annual Teen Fandom Con, organized by the Library’s Youth Services staff.

“I was never able to be myself without being picked on or pushed around. At Teen Fandom Con, I could finally be someone who was strong. I could finally let my own confidence shine.”

If someone is feeling down or struggles to fit in, Daniel-Chase recommends trying the teen classes and events at the Library. “Through events at the Library I’ve found people that I’ve been able to be friends with.” He says that while he always struggled to fit in at school, he easily made connections at the Library. If you don’t attend school or work with like-minded people, if you haven’t found a place where you feel comfortable, if you’re looking for friends with similar interests, think about the Library. There are groups for participants of all ages that offer opportunities to develop hobbies, to learn new skills, and to grow relationships with others. Whether you love cosplay or crafting, movies or magic, true crime or travel, you’re sure to find a community that enjoys it too. Just like Daniel-Chase discovered, whether you’re looking for a great variety of books, CDs, movies, or people, the Library is for everyone.

...if you’re looking for friends with similar interests, think about the Library.

Adopted as an infant, April had been curious about her birth family for most of her life.

“I have wanted to find my family since...forever,” she said.

“I always wondered what my mom looked like.”

By the time April was old enough to research her birth parents, her mother had passed away and neither she nor her father had elected to share identifying information with the agency that handled the adoption. April thought that her true ancestry would always be a mystery.

One day while working on a public computer at the Spencer Road Branch of the St. Charles City-County Library, April heard someone ask at

the information desk, “Where is the genealogy class?” She thought about her own stalled search for family and quickly found her way to the classroom. There, a volunteer named Monica was preparing to teach a beginning family history class regularly offered by the Library. April cautiously approached her and told Monica she was not enrolled in the class, but needed help. April introduced herself and shared the story about her adoption and search. As she spoke, the room got quiet. The entire class was intrigued. They waited while Monica sat at a computer to help April. Within five minutes, Monica had found an obituary for April’s birth mother using the library’s online resources.

“With the little bit of information April had and the databases the Library offers, we were able to find what she

needed,” Monica remembers. “It was just one of those serendipitous kinds of things.” After 53 years of wondering, April finally knew the name of her mother.

Emotional, overwhelmed, and excited, April immediately went home and used the information she had discovered at the Library to begin a Facebook search. After days of searching and many inquiries, she discovered that she had cousins living just an hour away. They met for the first time in the summer of 2017.

“I discovered my nationality. I saw a picture of my mother when she was in junior high school!” April could not be happier with the St. Charles City-County Library. “Our library resources are fantastic,” she says. “What an amazing experience it was when the Library did this for me.”“I have wanted to find my family

since...forever,” she said.Middendorf-Kredell: McClay: Portage Des Sioux: Spencer Road: WingHaven®: Programs marked NR do not require registration. 19
