This activity helps your child to understand instructions that involve ‘exclusion’, leaving something out or ‘inclusion’, adding something in.

You will need the text message cards and the scootercatalogue sheet for this activity. Ask your child to read the text messages and then choose all the scootersthat fit the descriptions. Write the numbers in the boxesbelow the texts messages. Use the answer sheet to check the answers at the end discussing any differences.

You might need to explain what each exclusion or inclusion word means as follows:

: Explain that this means none, Neithere.g. “I like wave handles drop handles”. “This means don’t pick any scooters with waveneither norhandles or drop handles.”

Explain that this means one or the other but not both,Either: e.g. “I like v shaped handles maxi wheels.” “This means you can choose a scooter with v shapedeither orhandles or maxi wheels but not both.”

Explain that this means everything but the...,All...Except: e.g. “I like with maxi wheels the yellow ones.” “This means you can choose any scooter withall exceptmaxi wheels but don’t choose the yellow one.”

Explain that this means but not ..,Instead of:e.g. “I want a green scooter with v shaped handles wave handles.” “This means you can instead of choose a green scooter with v shaped handles but not a green scooter with wave handles.”

Explain this means two things, one and the other,Both:e.g. “ drop handles and wave handles are nice but not with maxi wheels.” “This means you can Bothchoose a scooter with drop handles or wave handles but it needs to have micro wheels.”
