Find the Future in YouTransition Year Open Day
Tuesday 2nd May 2017
Glasnevin Campus: 9.30 - 14.30
Welcome to DCU Transition Year Open Day 2017. We hope this Open Day will help you gain an understanding of what university is all about, to start thinking about your future and the effects of your behaviour and attitudes towards learning. We want to provide you with a desire and confidence to research and ask questions – to know that no question is a ‘stupid’ question.
Benefits to you:• Awareness of specific subject requirements for
a DCU course• Know the value of researching all there is to know
about a course e.g. lecture hours, tutorials, how the course is assessed [exams/assignments/ presentations/group work]
• Have an expectation of the skills required for the transition from second level to third level
• Gain knowledge on possible careers for graduates of a DCU course
• Know the value of holding a third level qualification - job prospects will improve with a degree
• Get a feel for the campus that you may be studying on for three or four years
• Gain advice on how to manage your study and social activities
• Information on accessible routes into college (HEAR/DARE)
• Information on sport and academic scholarships• Encouragement to believe in yourself to make
things happen
Our Open Day activities will help you explore what DCU has to offer. You will find out more about our fantastic degrees and learn about the excitement of student life on our DCU campuses.
There will be an Information Point in each of the buildings where course presentations take place (see campus map for these locations).
Look out for our Student Ambassadors (wearing “Can I Help?” tops) and members of staff who will be pleased to help you and direct to the Open Day Information Points and presentations.
DCU offers over 60 undergraduate degree courses in the areas of Business, Languages, Arts, Humanities, Science, Health, Engineering, Computing, Education and Teaching. The presentations will provide a brief overview of course content, work placements and career prospects. Each presentation will last 30 minutes and will be repeated throughout the day. For example, if you are interested in attending the Accounting and Finance talk, go to room QG15 in the DCU Business School (Q) at 10.00am or 11.00am or 12.00pm or 1.00pm.
DCU Student Ambassadors will deliver a ‘college experience’ presentation providing a snapshot of the realities of studying on a particular course - hours spent in lectures, tutorials, assignments - their own experiences of overcoming difficulties and the support they have received. This information will hopefully be of benefit to you, ease your concerns and help you prepare for the transition from second level to third level.
