Squash Report - 2014/2015The Squash Division of the club has faced a number of challenges over the past year. Falling junior numbers, player retirements and the emergence of a stronger Silverdale club (thanks to former international Shelley Kitchen joining the club) have resulted in a slight drop in numbers over the past year (down 14 to 75 in 2014). However, there have been some successes on the membership front.

A number of new members were signed up under the 1st year membership deal, primarily as a result of two social leagues run during the year. These attracted members in the community that had previously played at the Leisure Centre and wanted more playing opportunities. Further, already this year, a number of new juniors have joined the club and are attending the junior club night coaching on Fridays.

Club Champs The 2014 Club Champions are Chris Harre and Samantha Godfrey, while our Junior champions are Charlotte Green and Ethan Agi. The Squash AGM at prizegiving saw a return of several familiar faces onto the committee, as well as a change in responsibilities for others. Aaron Webb is the new Chairman after two years as Club Captain, and Blair Ashton was voted Club Captain for the first time.

Court Booking SystemThe squash division recently completed the phase one installation of a court booking system promoted by Squash New Zealand. This enables the members to book courts remotely without the need to come down to the courts and record names on paper. Further, it has the advantage for the management to block book courts well in advance for tournaments, interclub nights and other club events. For the members it has the added bonus of being able to cancel a court booking without having to physically come to the club. The second phase of the installation of this system involves the connection of the booking system to the court lights, which is planned for later in 2015.

Interclub ResultsA number of teams competed throughout the year in the various Squash Auckland interclub competitions. Of note, the Men’s Division 12 team won the winter pennant. Three other teams made the semi-finals of their respective competitions.

Tournament ResultsA number of the more competitive members competed in various tournaments around Auckland and some further afield. Of note, Kylie Frank, Sean Le Poidevin and Charlotte Green all had a number of tournament wins throughout the season. Further, three of our ladies combined with some Warkworth ladies to

compete at the Superchamps qualifiers last year. They made the final which was a huge achievement, but could not make the final hurdle to be Auckland Champions. However, they were invited to the Nationals in place of a withdrawal from another region, and they did well to come 7th overall in New Zealand. Two Masters teams also entered into the NZ Masters Team Championships hosted by the Silverdale club. Both teams had a great time!

2015-FutureThe squash committee has been working hard to address the issue of a dip in the membership levels after a good year in 2013. The social leagues are the cornerstone of enticing new adult members to the club, while encouraging juniors is also high on the priority list.

62nd ANNUAL Report

The club has now completed its 62nd year of operation and the way in which the season unfolded is documented in the following pages by way of reports and photographs.

April 2015 saw the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli by the Anzacs. Red Beach rowers were present on two continents for the commemorations. Ten rowers took part in a two-day row around the Gallipoli peninsula, landing at Anzac Cove with 25 other boats on 22 April.

MembershipSurf membership remains

buoyant with increases in the ranks of both the SeniorSurf and JuniorSurf divisions. Around 72% of the club’s active members are involved in both competition and patrolling while 28% choose to patrol only. There is a large pool of qualified lifeguards that can be called on for volunteer patrols at both Red Beach and Pakiri.

The club has now completed its sixth consecutive year of patrolling at Pakiri.

Surf Lifeguard Award numbers (39) are at a healthy level and reflect the movement of Rookies into Senior ranks. IRB qualifications – drivers and crew - are encouraging and will have a positive impact on the 2015-16 patrolling season.

Associate membership remains buoyant and we see this in the Friday night dining numbers at the club.

OCEANS ‘15 – NATIONALS - Held at Mt Maunganui, the first day of competition began with the beach flags. It was quite a spectacle to see the long snakes of young athletes in four different arenas. We started off slower than in previous years but took out seventh place overall with 5 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals in total.

Some amazing results and, true to be said, our kids love the Oceans event.

Congratulations to all medallists, you had the entire Red Beach Surf Club cheering you on and you made us very proud. To be a medallist is something you will never forget, nor will your Red Beach

supporters.

To all competitors at Oceans ’15, well done, you made all us parents proud of your efforts and hard work. Many thanks to all the parents who helped and supported as well, we hope you enjoyed the four days of Oceans ’15.

SLSNR Awards of Excellence Finalists 2015 - Congratulations to the following finalists for their efforts over the season:

Rookie of the Year: Sophie HildesleyU14 Sportswoman of the Year: Tania DenvirU14 Sportsman of the Year: Jonathan Selman (who won the award)Outstanding Contribution to JuniorSurf: Anna Hildesley, Dylan Turner (who won the award)

There are only 3 finalists per category in the Northern Region and you have represented Red Beach with real spirit and pride and you all deserve the best.

SPECIAL THANKS - The key

to our success is the help we receive from many people. The sharing of duties and support is spread wide which makes our club unique.

Thank you Colleen Murphy

the ‘Club mum’ who organises our barbeque set-up. With help from Tegel Chicken we usually raise $400-$500 every Sunday morning.

I personally would like to thank our committee members for their fantastic work -Kathy Kramer, Sally Mellor,

Jan Campbell, Kirsty Rutledge-Malyon, Sidah Russell, Mark Readman, Dylan Turner, Kevin Cornish, Richard Rogers & Rob Harwood.

All of their roles help in different ways and the success of our children is reflected by the work our committee puts in.

A special thanks to Sally Mellor who has stepped down as secretary but is supporting Sidah Russell who has taken up the role. Sally’s efforts over the past four years have been amazing and we all thank you so much for your very hard work. We will miss you.

After five years, this has been my last season as JuniorSurf Chairman. I have experienced some great highlights, namely winning the Junior Nationals (Oceans) in 2012 and coming first equal on another occasion.

But more memorable are the relationships and friends that have been created by belonging to our club, and watching the hard effort that all our young athletes put in.

Again I wish to thank the committee members who have, over the years, given the Junior division great structure and support to make my role a lot easier. Dylan Turner is the new chairman and I wish him all the best to guide our juniors as we look ahead.

Well done team, for another amazing season, and we hope to see the Red Beach colours flying high next season.

Juniorsurf Chairman’s ReportThe 2014-2015 season

objective for the club’s JuniorSurf division was that the children involved, whether from purely a participation level to those wishing to extend themselves, have fun and enjoyment as members of the club.

For the committee, this objective meant we had to be balanced in all areas, giving each child a sense of personal achievement and fantastic club camaraderie.

PARTICIPATION - Membership numbers at the start of the season, after the two registration days, were 346 juniors of which 159 were boys and 187 girls.

TRAINING PARTICIPATION - Quite varied; a little slow before Christmas but we noted a lot of enjoyment in training and participation in large-sized groups.

200 METRE BADGE - A ‘licence’ for our kids to use boards and a good guide to their swimming ability, mostly attained in the A8 division. The objective once again is participation at this level.

COMMUNICATION - Monthly via email to parents at home, usually sent by the group manager, plus coaches’ communication at Sunday trainings. The continual emphasis is to encourage parents to actively participate with their children, to help parent involvement at a higher level than other sports and to try to encourage parent/child interaction. I believe our

sport is still well ahead of other sports in this area.

FINANCE - To achieve a $10,000-$15,000 balance to carry forward to the 2015-16 season. This was achieved with membership subscriptions, sponsorship and fundraising events. The treasurer’s report accurately covers this.

EQUIPMENT - We completed the fifth season of our ‘Paddleboard Purchase Scheme’ in which families and the club are in a joint relationship for the upcoming season. Eight families are currently in the Board Purchase Scheme 2015-2016 process, an increase from last year’s six families. The scheme has been a success with 12 boards returning to the club this winter after having been out for 3 years. Their condition indicates they have been extremely well looked after by the families, repairs carried out well and the responsibility by the families at an optimum level.

With gear valued at around $2,250 per item and the large amount of equipment that is needed for a club of our size, we successfully maintained equipment again and got through the season with no major issues of gear shortages.

Club board usage is high and we currently have 20 boards from last season being repaired over the winter at a cost of $4,500.

Equipment is the biggest issue for our club, but having the board scheme in place has kept our club board maintenance costs within reason.

With the return of some of the board scheme boards to our club pool, we are balancing between leasing some of them out to families for one season only, with the remainder going back into the general club pool.

MANGAWHAI CAMP - Held in early-January, this has been one of the JuniorSurf Division’s greatest successes, with a 5-day camp culminating with the ‘survivor competition’ in which 13 teams of six children aged between 7 and 13 worked together to face challenges of survival. It was a week of camaraderie for all.

The camp at Mangawhai was a great experience, especially with the training when we paddled across the estuary and around to the Mangawhai Bar side of the estuary. We had the entire beach to ourselves and, with waves reforming, the kids’ skills improved incredibly. Many thanks to all the parent helpers for making this a great experience for the children. Special thanks to Dan Readman who supplied the horse truck transport for the ‘ice-run’.

AUCKLAND JUNIORSURF CHAMPIONSHIPS/ CATH & EDDIE MILLAR CUP - After seven consecutive wins we finished second this year, due to a strong performance by Orewa. It was great to see Orewa do so well, our congratulations to them. Competition is good for the sport and this will enable us to keep striving.

Surf Canoe ReportAt the start of the 2014-15

season the numbers for canoe crews were at 47, giving four open men’s and masters crews, two open women’s and masters crews, two U19 women and one U19 men’s crew.

And before the new season got under way we managed to secure some great sponsorship to purchase a new type of canoe to Red Beach, a CSP craft which was delivered in October. With the help of The Flying Herons – Bryan and Pat – we were able to purchase new team rash vests to follow on with the boaties’ vest design. Many thanks.

At the first two carnivals, all crews managed to finish in the points positions in all categories,

taking crews into the bigger carnivals on a high. At the Whangamata Classic, the Owen Chapman Cup and the ERCs, all crews again finished in top five positions.

This led the crews into the NRCs at Ruakaka where the Masters, open men and open women’s events were won by Red Beach. The U19 women came 1st and 2nd and the U19 men finished second.

At the Nationals at Gisborne, some crews had members missing but still gave great performances in reaching the finals.

For next season the older crews are still looking very strong and we have started a drive for

more members and new crews to boost the numbers in the U19 divisions for both men and women.

Red Beach’s boat rowers who travelled to Turkey in April for the centenary of the landing by the Anzacs at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. See story and pics, pages 19 & 20.

These ladies worked very hard all season. It was a pleasure to see them celebrating their first ever carnival win, taking out their grade at Whangamata in Round 2 of the NZ Surf Boat series.

They also collected a Silver medal in the Long Course at the NRC’s at Ruakaka. Thank you girls for an enjoyable season.

Open Women - The BangersThe Bangers were a new

crew with little experience when they came together at the end of 2014. Three of the crew members were new to surf rowing and one new to rowing altogether, however, over the season and through dedicated training, the Bangers improved with every row. As all the girls were extremely competitive there was a lot of frustration around their performances during competitions and the results they were getting.

The Bangers had perseverance and with the help of # 1 jump starter Jed, they started getting into the boat faster. By the NRCs they were a true threat on the water for a lot of crews. Unfortunately, on that fateful weekend, the Bangers dream was shattered and the start of the ultimate rowing legacy (apart from the Pirates and Boomers) was buried in a huge barrel of white water. They’re all a great bunch of girls and I am very proud of the Bangers’ performances, dedication, team work and attitude throughout the season. That’s why they were a pleasure to have on the beach

and as a part of the Red Beach family.

Shamus

Open Women – SirensThe Sirens opened their

account early in the season by winning a bronze medal at Rescue 2014 at Montepellier, France. They showed early in the NZ season they would be the crew to beat by securing three wins from the first three carnivals of the NZ surf series to retain their NZ surf series title. This included winning the North Island championship title and being selected to represent NZ for the second consecutive year to race the Australian representative crew.

Although the Sirens were beaten 3-0 by the Australians in the test series, they showed the experience they had gained from competing in international racing and pushed the Australians all the way to the line. Whilst the Sirens were a little disappointed in finishing Nationals with two silver medals, everybody on the beach knew they were the golden girls of NZ surf boats.

Bugsy

Open Men - Cab SavsThe Cab Sav’s final season

rowing down into the Open grade was highlighted by the use of the brand new boat fundraised by our club’s small Gallipoli 100 team. The boat was nicknamed Poppy by both ourselves and the Sirens crew whom we shared its use throughout the season. We christened the boat in competition by winning our first race at the December carnival at Whagamata and continued to adapt our style until we

were achieving a competitive boat speed by the time of the Nationals. The crew had hoped to defend its unbeaten sequence of nine Masters titles at the North Island Boat Champs in February but this once in a season opportunity was dashed when the Masters division was dropped from the programme. We Masters age group rowers continue to lament the lack of tangible support and competitive recognition from SLSNZ.

Three of the Cab Savs went on to row in the club’s G 100 team at the Gallipoli Centenary commemorative event in Turkey. The crew intends to compete at the World Masters Games in 2017 here in NZ when the surf lifesaving events will be held at Takapuna Beach.

Chris McCullough

Open Men – BoomersThe Boomers were the

youngest open men’s crew competing in this division with the inclusion of first-year surf boat rower, 19 year-old Ryan Davenport. The crew’s average age was 23 years. The goal this season was to make finals at every carnival.

The Boomers exceeded their goal and found themselves consistently performing better as the season progressed to the point where they were competing for a podium finish at carnivals in the latter part of the season. The improvement throughout the year saw them finish fourth in the NZ Surf Boat series and capping the season off with a bronze in the long course event at the Nationals.

President’s ReportAlthough the 2014/15 year

probably won’t be remembered as one of Red Beach’s finest on the competitive surf sports front, the Club and its members enjoyed another very busy and productive season.

After a reasonably promising start to the season and some pretty solid performances at the Club Carnivals before Christmas, things didn’t quite come together for the remainder of the season. That being said, a successful defence of our own Owen Chapman Cup, a third place finish at ERC’s, second at NRC’s and eighth at Nationals are not exactly failures. Within and alongside these results were some fantastic individual feats.

The performances of the

Pirates U23 Men’s boat crew in taking Gold and the Sirens Open Women’s crew taking third at the World Champs (Rescue 2014) in France in September were outstanding with the Sirens going on later in the season to represent New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman series with Australia.

Congratulations also to Kelsi

Boocock and Briar McLeely in being named in the New Zealand Development Squad. Caitlin Ryan, a member of the New Zealand Open Women’s Flatwater Kayaking team, has already had some great success at World Cups ahead of her and her team mates’ attempts to qualify for the Rio Olympics at the World Championships in August. And Briar McLeely and Karl

McMurtrie will represent New Zealand at the Junior World Championships later in the year. Thanks to the hard work of our coaches Dan Peacocke and Vaughan Skiffington over the course of the season.

Similarly to the Senior Division, the Juniors also had something of a lean year by their standards with a second placing at the District Champs, a seventh at Oceans 15 and the loss of the Cath and Eddie Millar cup for just the first time in the last 13 years it has been contested.

Again, however, there were some fantastic individual performances and away from the strictly competitive stuff, 300-plus kids and assorted parents, coaches and supporters enjoying themselves and learning valuable beach and water skills on a Sunday morning is a fantastic sight and points to the continued future strength of the club.

Lifesaving activities were again spread across both Red Beach and Pakiri with a combined total of 16 rescues – up by nine over the previous season. Large club that we are in members, patrolling two beaches still puts a lot of strain on resources and a huge thanks to Robyn Presland, Debra Cairns and Craig Gledhill for their work in organising and co-ordinating patrols, the patrols themselves and particularly the ‘Carnival’ patrol who held the fort during carnivals (obviously) and who were justifiably recognised at Prizegiving as ‘Patrol of the Year’.

Over the course of the year a further 39 new lifeguards gained their ‘Bronzes’ and in June, 14 keen souls braved the wild conditions at Kariaotahi to gain their IRB qualifications.

A number of our rowers were

privileged to participate in two significant Gallipoli 100 events commemorating the centenary of the Anzacs landing. A group of 10 rowers plus supporters travelled to Gallipoli to join with Australian crews in rowing along the Dardanelles before landing at Anzac Cove on 22 April while another group also joined Australian crews for a re-enactment of the Anzac landings at Collaroy Beach on Anzac Day. At the latter event our club Patron Bryan Heron was given the honour of raising the New Zealand flag.

Although Squash membership numbers dipped a little on the previous season, a new enthusiastic committee and some new initiatives including the new court booking system are already seeing this turnaround with new members joining. Tournament and interclub successes included the Men’s Division 12 team winning the winter pennant.

The administration and financial management of the club continues to be well handled by Debra Cairns and the financial statements show the club to be in relatively good shape, notwithstanding the continued challenges in generating income to meet the needs of an expanding membership base.

We raced every carnival except the Wellington and Piha events and placed in the top three at each carnival. The crew won at the NRCs, were second at ERCs and third at the North Island Champs at Waihi and the Nationals in Gisborne.

All but two boys were first year surf competitors and performed extremely well against some very experienced opposition. A particular stand-out performance has been the new sweep Tamati Munroe who gained skills and confidence beyond all expectations. He will be a future asset.

Congratulations to Alex Cassidy, Ben Partridge, Jack Smith, Doug Burfoot, Callum Blackburn, Tamati Munroe and

Brendan Herbst. It’s been my pleasure to coach you guys.

Mike Smith

U19 Women - Blakey’s Angels

The crew were Georgia Cox, Tyler McDowall, Jessica Cornish and Briana Smith. These girls were very consistent throughout the season, always placing in the top 3. They were 2nd in the Short Course and 3rd in the Long Course at the Nationals at Midway Beach, Gisborne.

These girls are all still eligible for this U19 division next season, if they are prepared to work collectively. With the right commitment they can go one better and dominate this division next season.

Craig Dillon

U23 Men – PiratesThe Pirates crew of Rhye

Jacka, Ben Flight, Max Anstis, Shamus O’Halloran and Bugsy O’Halloran (sweep) went to Rescue 2014 at Montepellier, France in September 2014 and came away with a World title. Very proudly a first World gold for Red Beach. Back in NZ, a new Pirates crew with three first-year surfboat rowers took on the new season. The young Pirates showed at times they had the goods to be the best U23 crew in NZ but lacked consistency and experience. Regardless, they placed second in the NZ Surf Boat series, second at North Island champs and finished with two bronze medals at Nationals.

Bugsy

U23 Women - The GigglesRebeca Ash, Jasmin

A second group of three Red Beach crews and supporters headed to Sydney’s Collaroy Beach to take part in the 100 year Anzac commemorations. Along with a crew from Omanu SLSC there were 82 crews from around Australia and one crew from Turkey who landed on Collaroy beach in spectacular fashion, recreating what took place at Gallipoli 100 years ago.

The award for Most Improved Female Rower went to Sarah Fraser from the Bangers open women’s crew; the Most Improved Male was Tamati [Tumbles] Munroe, the sweep from the U19 Doom Squad; the Top Surfboat Crew was once again the Sirens. Well done to you all.

I would like to thank Debra Cairns for all the work she does on behalf of the boaties, and the Senior Surf Committee for their help, especially in the funding for one of our new surfboats. Madison Smith has done a fantastic job in putting together our newsletters which are emailed to the crews, ex rowers, sponsors and supporters.

Thanks to Veronika Cox, our team manager for all her work, sorting entries and looking after the administration of the subsidy scheme. We have been treated to some outstanding photography. Also, Bruce her able assistant for help in moving boats around the beach and getting tents sorted.

Finally, to all of the rowers and sweeps at our club, you guys and girls are an amazing group of young [and not so young] people to be around, especially on carnival day. Win or lose, the atmosphere in our club tent is always positive and there’s always a laugh to be had. The Boaties’ Facebook page is another example of all the friendly banter within this group.

Craig DillonSurf Boat Captain

U19 Men - Doom SquadWe started the season with

five rowers and a sweep from 2013/14 then grew the ranks to 9 rowers and two sweeps in September. We dropped back to six rowers and two sweeps by February.

Swimmers line up for the start of the 26th Open Water Swim at Red Beach, February 2015.

The bar and kitchen continue to provide the bulk of our funds as well as providing a great place for members and guests to socialise. There can’t be too many better venues for Friday night meals or Sunday morning breakfasts! Thanks to Greg, Lisa and their respective teams for their efforts.

As always I would like to

thank our sponsors, many of whom have now supported Red Beach for a number of years:

Our major sponsors: The Flying Herons, Argosy Property Ltd, NZ 1st Financial Services, Northern Arena, Dads Pies and Hiway Stabilizers.

Our Red Beach Family of Sponsors continues to grow with a number providing in-kind support to the building project: Allproof Industries, Cornish Truck & Van, D&H Steel Construction, Orewa New World, Hutchinson Consulting Engineers, Pinewoods Holiday Park, Silverdale Liquor, Tegel, Linfox, GBJ Concrete, Orewa United Travel, Express Aluminium, Blakey Contractors, North Harbour Law and Placemakers Silverdale.

And also our Business House Sponsorship category with 28 local businesses signing up to support Red Beach.

We also acknowledge the generous support we again received from BNZ with their ‘Closed for Good’ initiative and various grants and donations received from ASB Community Trust, BH Heron Lifeguard Trust, Lion Foundation, Harcourts Foundation, NZ Community Trust and the Lottery Grants Board.

We also saw the return of, for the fourth time, the very popular Fishing Direct Red Beach SLSC Fishing Competition that raised funds for lifesaving equipment. A huge amount of work goes into this and again I must thank Wade Downey and his team and all the various category sponsors for their hard work and support.

As members will be only too well aware, the Club redevelopment has continued slowly with still some considerable work to be completed before we can say we are finished (if ever). Delays

have been a combination of timing (not to be building during the peak surf season), contractor availability and probably, most importantly, funding limitations. As we sit today we have sufficient funds to complete the shell of the SW extension and the refresh and recladding of the Southern (main entrance) side of the building.

We also have a separate source of funding to cover a large portion of the kitchen/bar redevelopment. Through the SLSNR Surf 10:20 initiative we are hopeful of receiving a further large injection of funds to assist in completion of the building. While further fundraising will still be required, once we have clarity around the likelihood and timing of this contribution the Building Committee will be able to programme the remaining aspects of the redevelopment with the objective of completion in the 2015 calendar year.

Finally, thanks to all our members and the wider community for your support over yet another busy season.

Surf Boat Captain’s ReportThis season saw a record

number of boat crews competing for Red Beach. We regularly entered 8 crews and it was only through injury that this number dropped to 7 for the Nationals at Gisborne.

The past 12 months have seen a major transformation within the fleet of boats. Through our continued partnership with Argosy Property Ltd, The Flying Herons (Bryan & Pat Heron) and some hard working individuals behind the scenes, we carried out a major refurbishment of most of our boats which will all now carry the exact same colour schemes and logos of our major sponsors. A big thanks to Mike Pearce and his team for their guidance and use of his yard in the refurbishment process.

We were also able to acquire two new boats, the first time in over a decade.

The first came through the hardworking G100 Group led by Chris McCullough and the second through our sponsorship with Argosy Property Ltd, The Flying Herons, Lion Foundation and a large contribution from Red Beach SLSC. The Argosy sponsorship also allowed us to purchase a new trailer and a set of oars.

The second boat was officially launched at the Owen Chapman Cup carnival

by Life Member Terry Marsh who pioneered surf boats at Red Beach. Terry travelled from Wellington to ‘christen’ the boat with the name Terry ‘T K’ Marsh. The G100 Boat was officially launched the following day and given the name Poppy in respect of the 100 year Gallipoli commemorations.

To continue to receive funding from the club, the surf boat division needs to support as many club fundraising initiatives as possible and to come up with an event or two of our own.

On the water, Red Beach boaties were again very prominent. In September 2014, three crews headed to the Life Saving World Champs in Montepellier, France. The Pirates U23 mens crew came away as the World Champions, the Sirens open womens crew placed 3rd and the Boomers open mens crew were very unlucky to miss a place in their final.

For the first time ever, Red Beach women’s crews won all three divisions at Round 2 of the NZ Surf Boat Series in Whangamata. At

the conclusion of this event the Sirens crew were named for the second year running to represent NZ in the annual Trans-Tasman Test Series.

In February, the Sirens were crowned winners of the NZ Surf Boat Series with the Pirates U23’s second in the overall standings.

Seven crews competed at the Nationals in Gisborne and Red Beach boaties had their best-ever finish on overall points for the Top Surf Boat Club, placing second. The Nationals were also the final swansong for the Cab Savs who, after 10 years competing for us, have hung up their speedos. We also said farewell to the Sirens crew who have been rowing for six seasons.

The season started overseas and fittingly enough finished overseas. We had a group made up of the Cab Savs, three of the Sirens and four others, plus supporters, head to Turkey and take part in a two-day day row down the Dardanelles, into the Aegean Sea and around the Gallipoli Peninsula. There were 26 crews from Australia, Turkey and NZ involved.

Lifesaving Manager’s Report

This season I took over the Lifesaving Manager’s role and a new patrolling system was adopted that worked well on the whole. With the help of Debra Cairns I managed the patrol roster over the season, while Craig Gledhill took over the responsibility of setting up the Pakiri equipment and the organisation of Pakiri during the season.

We would like to thank all those who made the 2014/15 patrol season a successful one. The statistics listed in this report reinforce the massive contribution that club members have given to patrolling Red Beach and Pakiri. The great weather meant that we had a big increase in people at our two beaches.

Between Labour weekend 2014 and 6th April 2015, a total of 3,306 volunteer hours of patrolling were completed at both beaches. In total, our patrols rescued 16 people and responded to 36 First Aid incidents and 6 searches. In addition, a total of 59 hours of after-hour call outs as first response, resulting in one rescue and two First Aids.

Patrol audits also met an acceptably high standard with only one audit dropping a point. The level of expertise in the application and conduct of our patrols remained high.

Patrol attendances were, in the main, very good but

like all voluntary organisations there were times when our resources were pushed to the limits. With our IRB driver numbers not as high in number as in previous years, the commitment of some of our drivers was huge. A big thanks to those who put in extra patrols and hours to help out when needed.

A total of 187 lifeguards were listed on the patrol roster, with only a few not showing for their required number of patrols.

Pakiri PatrolsSummer proved to be busy

this season in the number of rescues and beach numbers were higher. Flash rips just after high tide present a busy time at Pakiri. Regional guards were present Monday to Friday throughout the seven weeks of the busy school holiday period.

This season we secured two containers which were housed at the Pakiri Sports Club. This helped with the storage of much of the patrol equipment. Again, a big thank you to the Pakiri Camping Ground for supporting us with storage and wash-down facilities at the camp.

The local Iwi, residents, day trippers and camping ground visitors were once again unanimous in their praise of the club’s efforts.

Red Beach PatrolsRed Beach was predictably

more relaxed as far as patrol activity was concerned but with our five rescues and 25 first aids, it is testimony that Red Beach also has its dangers. Rescues consisted of assisting stand-up paddle boarders, kayakers and swimmers at the cove.

Red Beach lifeguards once again participated in the regional professional lifeguard programme and event lifeguarding. The club also entered a team in the Northern Region Patrol Championships.

Congratulations are also due to Sarah Lockwood who won the U-16 Lifeguard of the Year trophy while the Best All-Round Patrolling Member was picked up by Stephanie Busby. Thank you also to the Carnival Patrol led by James Grieve Snr who patrolled on carnival days during the season and once again won Patrol of the Year for the huge commitment over these times.

A special mention and thanks should also go to our team of Surf Lifeguard Award and IRB instructors who spent many weeks over the winter and the early part of the season, training and refreshing our members - Wade and Michelle Downey, Alistair and Robyn Presland, Eddie Marukore, Pete Fortes, Craig Gledhill, Nick Saull, Pete

Sport Manager’s ReportThe 2014-15 season for the

club has been one of ups and downs in the Surf Sports area.

A strong start saw podium results from our boat crews at the World Club Champs in France, the IRB boys delivering back to back wins in the Far North IRB Challenge and good early form seeing Chelsea Grant and Kelsi Boocock gaining representation in the SLSNR Trans-Tasman team.

The Sirens women’s boat crew, as a result of strong early-season form, were again selected as the New Zealand team to take on the best women’s crew from Australia.

The club in general showed its strength again in the early-season local carnivals and then by retaining the Owen Chapman, finishing a commendable 3rd at the ERC’s and 2nd at Ruakaka for the NRC’s.

A large contingent attended the National Champs at Gisborne and whilst all performed to their best, some results didn’t seem to go our way with a number of near misses. We did come away, however, with two top results … Briar McLeely taking out a well-executed race in the U19 ski to retain the title and Rachel Clarke pairing with Kelsi Boocock for a hard fought win in the Open Tube Rescue. From these top efforts and with hints of

better to come, both Kelsi and Briar were named in the New Zealand Development squad. Subsequent to this, Kelsi has recently been named a co-captain of the New Zealand Youth Team to the upcoming International Surf Challenge in September.

Congratulations to all who have achieved and I also make a very special mention of all of our club members who have put in hours of dedicated training both on and off the water and have strived to be the very best that they can be. You are the backbone of the club and without you Red Beach would not be the club that it is. Well done to you all.

As always there are many who have contributed in different areas to get the club and its members through the season. I extend a huge thank you to both Dan Peacocke and Vaughan Skiffington for your efforts both in the planning and the execution of the coaching programme. Your commitment has been tireless with the members gaining hugely from your knowledge and passion.

A strong sense of passion in both the athletes and the support teams ensured that the boat and canoe sections of the club continue to develop and go from strength to strength. The enthusiasm and professionalism displayed by you is second to none.

Once again our now

very experienced team of group and beach managers selflessly committed many hours of their time both during and leading up to carnivals to ensure that our members were on the start line and ready to go. This commitment was not just at the beach but started well before with the planning, the loading and towing of trailers and didn’t finish until the trailers were back and the gear unloaded. This was not without frustrations at times but the calibre of you folk always shone through and usually with your banter and wit.

We are also very fortunate to have a core of mums, dads, members and supporters who are ever ready to assist whether it be doing the working bees, loading gear, erecting the tents, putting in hours on the beach as surf officials or those behind the scenes jobs that go unnoticed. I extend my thanks to you because without your support we would struggle to function.

The club is committed to ensuring that its members are given the best of opportunities to develop and grow and are confident that with planning and hard work we will continue to strive and remain as the great club that Red Beach is and has always been.

Finally I wish our members who are finalists at the Northern Region Awards of Excellence all the best as with those who are competing in

The Gallipoli 100 EventIn April 2015, ten Red Beach

rowers travelled to Turkey to embark on an historic row to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landing by the Anzacs.

Using a surf boat shipped to Turkey for the event, they rowed from Eceabat on the Dardanelles, into the Aegean Sea and around the Gallipoli peninsula before coming ashore at Anzac Cove. Taking part were 26-plus crews including two from New Zealand (Red Beach & Muriwai), 23 from Australia and several Turkish crews, all making the sea journey over the two days of 21 & 22 April. The course that the crews rowed took them past every major landing point of the 1915 conflict.

With the Red Beach crew during the row was a red Commemorative Ribbon, printed with the names of individuals and families wanting to honour those who served at Gallipoli and those who gave their lives in battle following the landing on 25 April 1915.

The proceeds from the ribbon went towards the funding of a new surf boat for the club. The 14 year-old Red Beach boat used in the row was gifted to a start-up Turkish surf club at the conclusion of the commemorations.

Planning for the venture began in 2010 with a group of 11 club members, all keen to carry the Anzac spirit with them to Gallipoli for the centenary.

The logistics were daunting. There was the entry fee, the

fundraising, the shipping of equipment, the training and the travel challenges.

It was to be a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity on many levels. There was the historical significance of the centenary of the Anzac landing; the Anzac spirit in which the crews competed in mutual friendship on the water; and the cultural and educational awareness that emerged during the five years leading up to Gallipoli 2015.

The funding model was unique and hugely successful despite numerous hurdles encountered along the way. It should serve as a template for future international endeavours.

•The fundraising was anchored on the gifting of a refreshed but obsolete surf boat and oar set to a start-up Turkish surf lifesaving group

•Replacing the gifted equipment with a new boat, trailer, cover and set of oars sourced from Australia and shipping it to NZ ($48,000).

•Assisting the group with their travel costs to get to Turkey.

•Rowing a surf boat race around the Gallipoli peninsula … 26-plus crews over two days (seven legs) for the first time in history. Experiencing an historic second landing at Anzac Cove where New Zealand, Australian and Turkish crews all bonded by sharing the journey and the moment in an atmosphere of reconciliation and mutual respect.

•Re-enacting the dawn landing at Gelibolu beach on a calm, cold April 25th, rowing in from the open sea in the darkness to land at

exactly 4.30 am on the beach to raise our oars – all 150 of them – as a boaties’ salute to all those combatants, 100 years to the day.

•Establishing a club link and relationship with like-minded Turkish rowers and an embryonic lifesaving movement in their country.

•A community grants application, corporate sponsors, individual sponsors and a Commemorative Ribbon appeal were utilised to raise $76,000 of which $48,000 was directed back into the club for replacement surf boat equipment. A further $800 was gifted by the G100 team to our club’s current building fund.

The G100 TeamChris McCullough, Gordon

Williams, Duncan Reid, Mike Smith, Graham Paterson, Zita Talaic-Burgess, Ashleigh Jenkins, Kelly Andrew, Emma Stuart, Nikki Darroch, Ross Malyon (Team Manager). There were also several supporters.

The journey to Turkey for the centenary of the Gallipoli landing by the Anzacs was highly successful. It was also a unique and rewarding experience which will never be forgotten. And it could not have taken place without the magnificent support received from our key sponsors, general donors and ribbon supporters. In particular, we would like to thank the following …

‘100 Years – 100 Boats’ at Collaroy

In April, 15 Red Beach rowers headed to Sydney for the Anzac Day commemorations. A mix of men and women represented the club by crewing three surf boats in the ‘100 Years – 100 Boats Anzac Beach Memorial’ at Collaroy Beach.

They used two Red Beach surf boats which were shipped to Australia especially for the event; the third boat was from an Australian club.

On Anzac Day, 100 surf boats came ashore at Collaroy Beach and crew members were presented with wreaths made by schools before returning to the sea to release the wreaths. Oars were then held up in recognition of the sacrifices made by Australians and New Zealanders in the First World War battles at Gallipoli.

The ‘100 Years – 100 Boats’ was a South Curl Curl community event, run in partnership with the NSW Government and Turkish appliance company Beko.

Red Beach surf club patron and life member Bryan Heron raised the New Zealand flag on behalf of all its citizens during the formal ceremony.

Blakey

Some amazing results and, true to be said, our kids love the Oceans event.
