Strategy Thinking in aRevolutionary World

It’s not enough to workharder. Harder justdoesn’t cut it in a worldof discontinuous inno-vation. It’s not enoughto get better. Companiesare going to have tolearn how to get differ-ent – profoundly differ-ent. In industry afterindustry, yesterday’sbusiness models are

being supplanted by radically newways of doing business. This isn’tprocess re-engineering; it’s fundamen-tal strategy innovation. “Industry rev-olutionaries” are up-ending conven-tions and aggressive newcomers arechallenging the orthodoxies of incum-bents. In this topsy-turvy environ-ment, irrelevancy may be a bigger riskthan inefficiency.

It’s a fact: Over the past decade, new-comers have created the lion’s shareof new wealth in many industries.They’ve succeeded not by “executingbetter,” but by changing the rules ofthe game. In an increasingly non-lin-ear world, only non-linear strategieswill create new wealth. Yet few com-panies seem able to spawn imagina-tive, wealth-creating strategies.Strategy innovation can’t be the once-a-decade product of a lone visionary,just as quality can’t be the product ofa lone artisan. Strategy innovation,like quality, must be a deeply embed-ded, ubiquitous capability, and strate-gic thinking must be a daily habit,

pervasive throughout the organiza-tion, rather than the province of afew strategic planners.

Any company that wants to thrive inthe turbulent new economy will haveto learn how to harness the passionand imagination of every employee inthe quest for strategy innovation.
