FINALS - WEEK 1

After a riveting Tooheys Newcastle RL home-and-away season we enter into week 1 of the finals series with a top five separated by only two points.

Last weekend Lakes United secured the minor premiership with a strong victory against third place South Newcastle. A result that leaves the Todd Edwards coached Seagulls only one win away from a return to McDonald Jones Stadium on grand final day. A huge advantage to take into the finals for the Belmont club. At Kurri Kurri Sportsground a win to the Bulldogs would secure a finals position and relegate West Newcastle to sixth position. In front of a big old boys crowd Kurri did not disappoint and ground out a hard found 17 to 10 win over the Maitland Pickers. In the West v Macquarie fixture the Rosellas were awarded the win after the game was abandoned at half-time due to weather conditions with West leading 26 to nil. The lone Sunday fixture saw Central Newcastle defeat Cessnock to claim second positon and a home qualifying semi-final.

Saturday?s elimination semi-final is a replay of the round 16 Maitland v Kurri Kurri match. The Pickers will enjoy the home ground advantage while the Bulldogs will enter the clash with plenty of confidence after their victory the previous week. Match-ups this year are one a piece and the winner will live to fight another day. The remaining elimination semi-finals are South Newcastle v West Newcastle (reserve grade), Central Newcastle v Macquarie (open grade), Central Newcastle v Macquarie (under 19s), and Lakes United v Maitland (LLT).

St John Oval Charlestown is the venue for Sunday?s qualifying semi-finals and in the Business Plaza Cup host club Central Newcastle are up against South Newcastle. Both meetings this year have gone the way of the Lions including a strong 44 ? 24 win in round 15. The victor will take on minor premiers Lakes United the following Sunday for a place in the grand final while the loser will meet the winner of the Maitland v Kurri match. Games preceding the Business Plaza Cup clash are Macquarie v Maitland (reserve grade), Kurri Kurri v Lakes United (open grade), Maitland v Lakes United (under 19s), and Western Suburbs v South Newcastle (LLT).

FINAL SERIES RULES

MATCH DURATION: Each match shall be played in two equal halves with an interval. The time of each match shall be;

LLT 25 minutes each half

Under 19s 30 minutes each half

Open Grade 35 minutes each half

Reserve Grade 35 minutes each half

First Grade 40 minutes each half

TIME OFF:

Time off will apply in all grades in all finals series matches.

SUSPENDED MATCH:

In the event of an emergency which leads to the match being suspended and not resumed, e.g. a player not being able to be moved, the following will apply:

Suspended in f ir st half : if the total playing time is less than the first full half, the match is to be replayed at a later date to be determined by Newcastle RL.

Suspended at or af t er half t im e: If after the completion of the first half, the match is suspended and not resumed due to an emergency, the match shall be deemed completed, with the result of the match being the result which stood at the time that play was suspended.

Ext ra t im e ? If scores are level at the conclusion of regular time, extra time will be played. Extra time shall be 2 x 5-minute periods, after the initial 5 minutes of play the referee will cease play and teams shall immediately change ends. The team that did not kick off to commence the initial period of extra time, will kick off to recommence the second period.

If scores are equal at the end of extra time, play shall t hen cont inue on an unlim it ed basis unt i l t he f ir st point or point s have been scored (e.g. field goal, penalty goal or try) to determine the winner of the match. (i.e. there is no stoppage to begin golden point)

REPLACEMENT OF PLAYERS

The replacements permitted for each grade shall be as follows:

LLT ? Unlimited reserves with an unlimited interchange of those players

Under 19s ? 6 reserves with an unlimited interchange of those players

Open Grade ? 6 reserves with an unlimited interchange of those players.

Reserve Grade ? 6 reserves with an unlimited interchange of those players.

First Grade ? 4 fresh reserves with a limit of 8 interchanges of players.. In the event of extra time, two (2) additional interchange replacements are permitted. The balance of the eight (8) interchange replacements not used during regulation time will also be available to be used during extra time.

KURRI KURRI BULLDOGS After a tough season with many highs and lows we would like to thank our support staff, supporters, volunteers, old-boys, sponsors, the committee and the Kurri Kurri minor league and all those that have attributed to our season. Your continued support allows us to be the club we are. There are so many people that have been involved in this great club over the years to help make it what it is.

Old-boys day at Kurri Kurri sportsground was a smashing success, many highlights including first grades memorable win over Maitland to make the 2018 semi-finals. Further to this the club paid homage to the life members, with the specially designed jumpers going up for auction at the completion of the first grade game. The parochial crowd once again voiced their support and no doubt played a part I getting the Bulldogs across the line. The Scorpions finished the 16 rounds of the competition and have three sides in the semi finals this weekend with the Reserve Grade, Open Grade and Under 19s making the final series. Unfortunately with the First Grade loss last weekend to Western Suburbs they failed to make the semi finals for the first time in eight seasons and in the process picked up the wooden spoon which is very disappointing for everyone involved, but we move on and prepare for next season. Hopefully one of the lower grades can get to the grand final in 2018.

Last weekend the Scorpions also suffered losses in Under 19s and Reserve Grade, however both sides were guaranteed a semi final spot and the Reserve Grade had a top three spot in the bag and if results went our way they could have been minor premiers.

The day however belonged to the Open Grade coming away with an emphatic win against Western Suburbs to play their way into the semi finals. This side has virtually played grand finals the last five rounds of the competition knowing that a loss would put them out of contention and on Saturday against Western Suburbs they were at their best to come away with a 24-16 win after being down 12-0 late in the first half.

Ladies League Tag

First year in the semi-finals for the Maitland ladies and we are looking to make the most of it. The girls are very excited about playing this weekend but if we are to go further into the competition we need to improve from last weekend?s effort. Our defence has been our mainstay all year but last weekend it wasn?t up to our usual standard and this is the main area we need to address.

Under 19's With Kurri Forfeiting Round 16 the boys enjoyed the weekend off and are back at training feeling fresh this week, ready to take n Lakes in the Qualifying finals at Charlestown on Sunday.

Open Grade

It was tough going for open grade this season but the boys finished their season with a strong defensive game against Kurri. Thanks to everyone who has supported us this year & we look forward to coming back bigger and better next year!

Reserve Grade

Reserve grade put in a really good effort on Saturday to come away with a strong win built on a great attitude and willingness to work hard. Players Player went to Mitch Wilton and Coaches award went to Jye Bieman- King.

First Grade It was a very disappointing result for us. We are extremely proud of our fight back at the end. However we need to be much better in defence moving into the elimination finals this weekend at home.

Last week on one of Best days of the year old boys day we came away with 2/5 wins

Our girls started the day off, but were unfortunately beaten by a very good Souths team 18-0.

Our U19?s keep getting better every week, taking out the win against an under manned Souths Team 54-11.

Third Grade saw a clash of the top two teams, and we?re very unlucky to be beaten 22-4.

Reserve Grade were up against a very handy souths team but never gave up. Unfortunately, today wasn?t our

day, getting beat 26-12.

With the First Grade game determining the top 5, on no bigger day than Old Boys day for our club. The boys

really showed that we can give this a good shake in the next four weeks. The boys were on top the whole game

and ran away with a 36-22 win, securing themselves the minor premiership.

hopefully make it to the big day at the end of September.

Seagulls Hist ory....1976

Lakes supporters will be hoping history does not repeat the closing stages of the 1976 season. On August 15 at Townson Oval Lakes defeated South 39-3 to win the minor premiership in the last round. It was a hollow victory as South had rested a number of top line players. A few weeks later Clawson` s Lions would defeat Brian Moore` s Rosella side in the grand final

Good luck to all teams who have made the Final Series commencing this weekend. Congratulations to West Ladies League Tag, Reserve Grade and 19?s who will represent West in the Finals. Unfortunately West First Grade and Open Grade did not make it, but will be back bigger and better next season. Thank you to all players and support staff for the work you do during the season.

West s Ladies League Tag. The girls had no game due to Macquarie not being able to field a team but they are looking forward to the final series and meeting Souths this weekend at St. John Oval on Sunday.

West 19?s West 54 ? Macquarie 6. In a very one sided game the boys were able to take a good win over the Scorpions scoring 10 tries and 7 goals to Macquarie?s 1 try and 1 goal. The boys have this weekend off as they are Minor Premiers. What a good effort boys.

Reserve Grade: West 36? Macquarie 18. In a very enthusiastic game the Rosellas came away with a good win over the Scorpions. We now look forwarded to seeing the boys take on South Newcastle at Maitland Sportsground on Saturday in the Elimination Finals. Good luck boys we know you can get a win.

First Grade: West 26 ? Macquarie 0. In their final game of the season the Rosellas took a win at half time after the game was called off during extreme weather conditions. The Rosellas even with this good win were out of the final series. The Rosellas have had a tough season with injuries but will be back bigger and better next season.

CODE OF CONDUCTSUMMARY OF OFFENCES

NOTE: Clubs are responsible for the conduct of their players, parents/carers of the players, coaches, officials

and club supporters

No person(s) attending a match, function or event shall:

(a) Use offensive or obscene language to any participant;

(b) Enter the field of play during the course of a match without the prior approval of the ground manager appointed by the home club and/or Newcastle RL;

(c) Excessively dispute the decision of a referee or touch judge either during or after a match;

(d) Assult or act with aggression to any person(s);

(e) Behave in a way contrary to the code of conduct and/or the spirit of the game;

(f) Behave in a way which disturbs the enjoyment of a match, function or event by any other person(s), or brings discredit to the home club and/or Newcastle RL;

(g) Act in such a way as to exhibit racial intolerance, by language or other conduct, to any person(s);

(h) Refuse to accept the reasonable direction of the ground manager, official of the team/club which that person is supporting, or official of the home club and/or Newcastle RL,

Breaches of the rugby league code of conduct may result in penalties, including but not limited to:

· Suspension of a match and/or

· Termination of a match (including potential forfeiture of competition points) and/or

· Monetary fines and/or

· Suspension of a participant on a temporary or permanent basis and/or

· Suspension of a club, League or Association on a temporary or permanent basis.
