I. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

II. PROBLEM STATEMENT AND ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY AT BUTARO HOSPITAL

III. QUESTIONS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH

The report shows that new cases of cancer will be double in 20 years. And the ratio of deaths and new cases will be 1:2. In addi-tion 60% of new cancer cases and 70% of of cancer deaths occur in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. The situation is made worse by the lack of early detection and access to treatment.

“This send a strong signal that immediate action is needed to confront this humandisaster, which touches every community worldwide, without exception,” Dr Wild.

Through research and different studies in-cluding ethnographic study in the existing cancer center in Rwanda, it is found that ; The possibility to see or to stay in a green environment can affect the psychological and physical well being of humans posi-tively.

Some questions arises;

_“How can architecture act as an agent to stimulate wellbeing and health through the use of spatial interventions?”

_“How can spatial interventions or spatial qualities intervine in patients healing?”

The visit of patient(who died later) at Buta-ro Cancer Center is the origin of this thesis where Cancer sufferers were found lying on their bed, talking each others, some wait-ing to meet a doctor for a rendez-vous. The treatement causes pain, tress, anxiety, de-pression as well as low self esteem, emotional vulnerability and low quality of life.

However the environment can help a patient as it contributes to either a holistic healing process or becomes a critical stress-or. But when patients reach teir homes they do not get relaxing environment which lead to permanent depression.

The country has health center in each sector , in addition there are Abajyanama b’ubuzima within neighbourhoods, and the Rwanda ministry of health has a goal to provide trainings even at neighbourhood level(Umudugudu) about cancer detection so that it can be found at it’s early stage.

However Kigali(the capital city) is found to have high number of cancer patients due to its high_risk behaviour and urbanization. And most dominants cancers are Breast cancer and cervical cancer for women and children.

Designing a palliative environment through Holistic architecture that gener-ates therapeutic qualities for a cancer cen-tre and analysing qualitative architecture that contributes in physical and pschologi-cal wellbeing.

Creating domestic atmosphere within an hospital, an environment that can relax cancer patients, by providing privacy, social interaction, and close proximity to nature.

The block is closer to nature, with a porch where patients used to sit outside in close proximity to nature. In addition the block is at the lower part which provide privacy for patients.......it was somehow private, and for me I used feel more comfortable to do all I wantwhen, shouting when suffering,......

The block is on the uphill, with a porch ex-posed to everyone in the hospital, but it provides a terrase at the back with views, though it is fully exposed to the sun almost the whole day except in the evening.

.... I do not like to be exposed to everybody passing, when I want to sit outside I go to the back,........

The house seems to be very important, but it doesn’t provide any architectural feature to help patients, it is just a shelter for mate-rials and food storage.

...... she always come back tired than me,because she told me that they wait outside standing.

........The hospital is never good environ-ment, Unless it is in MERA NEZA!_MERA NEZA is a place where you can stay alone in nature enjoying views of mountains as you said, in the forest where you only hear sounds of birds and wind in leaves of trees. I use to go there when I feel confused, stressed,...... it can recover the the hope of life.

A. PRECEDENTS _ LIGHT

The factors of light, flow/Fluidity, personal space, social space and relation to outdoor spaces as well as the indoor climate are found relevant for the project as they all seem to have an influence on the pscho-logical as well as the physical health of can-cer patients. Therefore they can contribute to creating a calm, secure, comfortable and motivating environment, and help relieve the stress, the anxiety and the depression that the cancer patients may feel.

Depending on how the light is treted , it can create aesthetic, and bright material or color reflect and diffuse soft light in space.

The project has different programs including;Mutuelle Check in, Vital and Phelbotomy, family consult room, Chemo mixing room, Infusion room,Staff room, Nursing station, staff room, storage

and Toilets. In addition the building is sur-rounded by landscape used by patients.

Staff room, living room, private rooms, al-cove, Medical room, dinning area, Kitchen, Laundry.

In addition, buildings are randomly placed and spaced which allows Children to relax, and they are fully imbedded in the land-

scape

The room is defined by contrasts created between the bright crucifix in the back wall of the church and the dark materials on the floor and walls

Soft wood can shade space a create good quality lighting

When light is associated with dark material, its’s contrast is high and when associated with bright materials or colors, it becomes diffused light.

_The golden color of the daylight in the chapel is created by the soft clay.

_And the shading by soft wood

_Daylight through linear light rails worked into the ceiling._Galleries receive daylight through central narrow skylights with adjustable slats. _ Bright color reflect and diffuse soft light in space

Light can create focus and gives a feeling in space, and by wisely working with it, we can generate different feeling and emotions for humans.

Light washes timber wall with bright color finishing and brighten the space.

INTERVENTIONS FOR EAST - WEST ORIENTED ROOM V. INVESTIGATION OF LIGHT IN PATIENT’S ROOM IN RWANDA

LIGHT EXPLORATION

The sun path in Rwanda is East _ West direction, and it is approximately 870 south,Therefore we only need to have a small overhang in South facade to avoid direct sun radiation and for east west oriented room, the daylight get in from all corners with direct sun radiations. So the following study is for the room with East_West oriented openings.

Both Top and vertical lighting are found relevant for the project, us-ing wood slats and nature as shad-ing elements, and depending on how they are treated they can cre-ate different feelings in different spaces of different use. _ Can create ambiance, confort, decoration, aes-thetic,...In addition top lighting enhance the experience of patient to the sun movement, a patient can observe the sun movement and do not feel anoyed by the room, and this de-crease the period of hospitalization of a patient.

Daylight get in from all corners in East_West oriented building with direct sun radiations.

A. CHOICE OF THE SITE

VI.CHOICE OF THE SITE AND SITE ANALYSIS

B. SITE ANALYSIS

The site is locate in Eastern province, buge-sera district in gashora sector nearby Rumira lake. The choice of the site was based on the fact that the existing cancer centre doesnot serve the whole country of t]Rwanda, and many cancer sufferers are found in Kigali, So having another cancer centre in Bugesera would help to serve the rest of the coun-try and some parts of neighbouring coun-tries. Other considerations are existance of natura and Landscape, Accessibility, quiet neighbourhood and Existance of Hospital neaby.

The site is sloping down towards the lake which an opportunity to have a good vis-ual and physical interaction with natural features(Water).

In addition Different animal are found in the lake such us Hippopotamus, Crocodile, and different types of Birds are found , Which help in the creation of MERA NEZA environ-ment within cancer centre.

By considering Zoning regulations of Bugesera distict, the project should leave fifty meters from the lake(Buffer zone), and existing landscape should remain as unaffected as possible.

In addition there is a path passing through the site, and connect people of the neighbourhood to lake, which an opportunity for accessibility.

provide Eperience with natural elements, through senses:Visual,Hearing,Tactile and Smelling which reduces Stress,Pain,...
