On September 9, 2013, St. Augustine became

the first Compassionate City in Florida and 20th in the world.

Compassionate St. Augustine’s Advisory Board asked:

What type of projects will inspire a legacy of compassion

for the upcoming commemoration of the 450th anniversary

of the founding of the “Nation’s Oldest City?”

A public art project in Egypt and England seeded the idea.

St Augustine’s first citywide public art project in 450 years started to take shape in 2014 with a focus on the iconic

Monumento a la Constitucion on St. Augustine’s Plaza de la Constitucion. The 200-year-old monument,

a classic and elegant 30-foot-tall obelisk, commemorates the 1812 Spanish Constitution’s four foundational values

– Freedom, Democracy, Human Rights, and Compassion.

This unique idea, named Obelisk Art 450 (OA450), soon led to another as CSA’s advisory board asked,

“What about an OA450 legacy project called Compassion Through the Eyes of Children?”

CSA approved the mission and vision for their commemoration of the 450th and began putting the jigsaw-like pieces of

the projected $500K project into place. Immediate and long-term goals included but were not limited to:

OVERVIEW

• Organizing the hands-on OA450 team leaders

• Consulting with public art experts nationally and

internationally

• Creating a timeline and budgets for three interlocking

projects

• Hiring a professional public art administrator

• Developing a “call for professional artists”

• Developing a fund raising campaign and collateral

• Developing marketing collateral

• Securing private donations

• Researching and pursuing grant opportunities

• Requesting in-kind services

• Initiating the legal and artistic needs of the

international OA450 project with Aviles, Spain

• Selecting 25 historical sites in St. Augustine where an

act of compassion took place, or where the darkness

created by a lack of compassion would be brought to

light for future generations

• Seeking permits and city, county, state and school

board approvals where needed

• Contracting to build replicas of the Spanish

Constitution Monument

• Expanding website and public relations efforts

An Obelisk Art 450 initiative, February 2015 was

the Month of Forgiveness and Compassion by official proclamation.

The F Word: Images of Forgiveness was on exhibition at the Ringhaver

Student Center of Flagler College and at the Corazon Cinema and Café.

The exhibit used the real stories of victims and perpetrators

to explore concepts of forgiveness, and to encourage people

to consider alternatives to resentment, retaliation and revenge.

A luncheon was hosted at the Corazon by the Compassionate Women’s

group, along with the film, The Power of Forgiveness,

featuring stories and interviews with people from many faith traditions.

Stephanie Cassatly from The Forgiveness Project spoke to

a near capacity group at the Corazon.

A Forgiveness Workshop, led by Celia Chapman, Certified Facilitator of the

Byron Katie method, was held at the Mission House for those who hoped to

extend their ability to forgive.

Book clubs were invited to read Forgive for Good, by

author Dr. Frederic Luskin, highlighting the healing roles of

compassion, empathy and forgiveness.

St. Augustine and her sister city, Aviles, Spain, the first official

Compassionate Sister Cities in the world, both presented

temporary OA450 public art exhibitions. The projects were based

upon the original 30-foot-tall Constitution obelisk, and included an

artist exchange that created a unique international bridge

spanning 450 years inspiring the values of democracy, freedom,

human rights, and compassion.

Jan Tomlinson Master, the highest scoring OA450 artist from St.

Augustine, was selected by Compassionate St. Augustine to

participate in Aviles’ public art project. Master was sent on very

short notice to Aviles by Compassionate St. Augustine in mid-

April 2015 to participate in La Noche Blanca, a citywide public art

celebration on April 17, 2015.

Artist, Pablo Hugo Rozada Vena of Aviles, Spain was in St.

Augustine during July 2015 to complete his obelisk for the

VI and Queen Letizia of Spain during their visit to St. Augustine

for the 450th on Friday, September 18, 2015,

as the City of St. Augustine’s official gift to the royal couple.

On the final day of the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum exhibition,

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain toured St. Augustine's historic sites in

his country's former colony before addressing hundreds of

well-wishers from a balcony downtown.

During the royal tour the OA450 obelisks and the
