Passage 1

Telephone Networks

Networks require close collaboration between carriers, equipment vendors and government

regulatory authorities. Does your company simply wait for its equipment manufacturers to

come in and dictate the direction of technology, or do you like experimenting with new ideas?

The best approach is to be proactive. Test technology. Stretch your customers' imaginations to the

limit. In the process, you can improve ordinary technology and beat your competitors at the same

time.

Take advantage the "SOHO" (small office, home office) market -- one which they are

uniquely positioned in many ways to serve. Finally, you need to know a little about what big

companies need, and how a cable company can exploit this difficult to highly profitable

market segment by differentiating its services and solving pressing business problems.

Multiple Choice Comprehension Questions

1. Who provides telephone service? …………………………………………….....................

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

2. What should you do to be more competitive? ………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

3. What is 'SOHO'? ……………………………………………………………………………….

4. What is a market segment? …………………………………………………………………..

Passage 2

Container Shipping

Container shipping is the most cost-effective means of international transport. Before

containers, goods were often shipped in bulk making loading and unloading times lengthy. In

modern times, huge cranes move goods from feeder ships onto docks. Next the containers

are transferred to trucks. These trucks, which are designed to transport single containers,

move the goods to their final destination. Computer systems control these actions and

automate the procedures. Container traffic is measured in TEUs and containers come in 1

and 2 TEU size. Traffic at larger ports can reach 1,500,000 TEUs per month!
