The Prescription forPhysical Activities
LINE RESOURCES FORPHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Why be physically active?
Physical activity is very beneficial to your overall health. It has been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease,
diabetes and some cancers. The benefits do not end there, just moderate physical activity can strengthen
bones and muscles, improve mental health and actually raise life expectancy.
Tired of being tired? Energize your life with activity.
Some people think they are too tired for exercise. However, regular exercise is actually
associated with more energy and less fatigue. Instead of buying an energy drink or
nutritional supplement, go out and be active. Researchers have shown that low to
moderate intensity exercise can actually increase energy levels among fatigued
individuals.
How much physical activity do you need?
To receive the benefits of physical activity you do not need to run a marathon or be an Olympic athlete. The
American College of Sports Medicine recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate
physical activity a week. Simply walking for 30 minutes a day, most days of the week, will improve your health.
It is best to start slow – just minutes a day—and build physical activity into your daily routines.
It is never too late to start being active, all Americans can reap the health benefits of physical
activity ‐ regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, shape or size.
