IntroductionSlaithwaite Guitar School, based in the Colne Valley, was established in 2005 by David Whitaker. We offer quality tailor made lessons in a friendly and relaxed environment to all ages and abilities. All our tutors are CRB checked. Beginners especially welcome!

Learn what you want at your own pace; lessons can be planned to individual student’s needs. Whether you want to strum in your bedroom, busk to a crowd or perform to an audience SGS is the place to learn guitar in Huddersfield.

WHATS ON OFFERSGS offers a down to earth flexible approach to learning. Lessons can be tailor made to your requirements…learn a favourite song or riff in the genre of music you prefer. Variety is the key…no boring lessons here!

To get beginners started we offer a starter pack which includes a folder with tons of essential information about guitars, chords and songs to get you going.

Once the basics have been grasped your learning can extend beyond the guitar to musicology, recording and performance.

One to one tuitionStructured lessons based on the needs of the individual are the best way to learn how to play any instrument. Slaithwaite Guitar School provides a student with encouragement and support on their musical journey.

Group tuitionAvailable in groups of 2 – 4, this can be ideal for siblings or friends learning together. Sharing lessons is fun and also is an opportunity to discover the importance of being able to play along with other musicians.

Band tuitionAvailable in groups of 2 – 4, this is ideal for students wanting to play in a band. Get to play along with drums and bass in a live rehearsal situation! Learn how to set up equipment safely, make lots of noise and have a great time jamming! Many of our existing students have the band tuition in addition to their normal lessons and they find them an invaluable to enhance their playing skills. All equipment provided.

ABOUT DAVID WHITAKERDavid has a BA (Hons) Music Technology and is an established recording and performance artist with over 20 years experience as a guitarist/singer/songwriter. His music has been featured in the national music press and on BBC Radio 1. He has gigged extensively throughout the U.K., Europe, Asia and Australia. He holds a current CRB check.

RECORDING STUDIO & EQUIPMENTSlaithwaite Guitar School has an in-house recording studio. Complete with industry standard equipment, students get the chance to record their own music just like the pros!

You can overdub guitars, bass and vocals to create a song. The studio is also an invaluable asset as an educational tool. Students can jam along to prerecorded backing tracks to perfect their playing skills, rhythm and timing. This is an essential tool in understanding how music works.

PERFORMANCEBig Speakers! Loud guitars! Drums! Lights! Lots of fun! Hosted annually, the concert night is the showcase for the guitar school. The students have the opportunity to perform in front of friends, parents and peers alike. Skills and songs learnt throughout the year are performed in front of a live audience. There is no better way to demonstrate your ability than at a live gig! The show, now in its fifth year, always plays to a packed house!

Full P.A, amplifiers, lights and a professional house band are all on offer to contribute to a quality night. The students learn how to rehearse and perform with a band and most importantly with each other.

Best of all, their hard work is rewarded with the thrill of performing to a live audience.....

Slaithwaite Guitar school busking for cancerOn a wet and windy December morning in Huddersfield you may have spotted SGS students busking for cancer. Well done to all involved for raising £150.

AFTER SCHOOL BAND CLUBS Rock Band tuition is proving to be very popular. Students get the chance to play songs on electric guitar or bass in a live band with their classmates and friends.

Key features

Rock Band club lasts for one hour

Available for groups of 4-6.

The After School Club is based in the familiar surroundings of their school.

The tutor is CRB checked with the School.

All instruments, amplifiers and music are provided.

Each club runs for six weeks.

On the sixth weeks parents are invited to watch a live performance of the Rock Band.

Look out in the local press for Saturday and Summer Holiday Rock Band clubs starting in July 2012.

CASE STUDY Nields Junior, Infant & Nursery SchoolSGS has been running the After school club with key stage 2 pupils at Nields in Slaithwaite since January 2012.

After having spoken to the teachers involved and witnessed one of the impromptu rock band performances for the parents, it is evident that Mr Whitakers’ knowledge and skills result in a positive, enjoyable and informative experience.

It was amazing to see children who hadn’t previously picked up a guitar or bass playing and singing with such clarity and confidence. The achievements of the children were such that we are planning to do a “Rock Band” assembly in the near future.
