    Preface

    In the Sikh trad ition a we ekly comm unity mea l, the langa r, is served afteror during the relig ious service. The lang ar is op en to Sikhs and non-Sikhsalike who sit toge ther to sha re a c om mo n me a l, usua lly co nsisting of

    simple food s like flat b rea d, b ea n stew and veg eta ble c urry. The m ea l isserved a nd enjoyed in the spirit of eq uality and c om mo nality. The lang arshows the p ow er that a shared m ea l has in bringing p eop le to ge ther andbreaking do wn d ifferences.

    Like the langar in India that brings together people from different classesand religions, co mm unity kitc hens bring tog ether p eop le from differentc ultures and be liefs. We were excited to explore the role that c omm unitykitc hens are p laying in Toronto a nd their ab ility to c ontribute to c rea tinginc lusive a nd e nga ge d c om munities.

    The fo llow ing boo k depic ts five co mm unity kitche n projec ts in Toronto . Wewa nted to tell the story of eac h individua l kitc hen through the vo ic e o f itspa rticipants and organizers. Care w as taken to po rtray the rea lity of t hekitchen, experienced by its members. Photographs, recipes, quotes andge neral informat ion we re used to tell these stories.

    Introduction

    We beg an this project w ith the a im to show c ase the va riety of c om munitykitc hen p rogram s in Toronto . During o ur doc ume nta tion proc ess, wedisc overed ho w the c om munity kitchen idea c ould b e used to servedifferent p urpo ses. We wa nted to d ep ic t the p ow er of food in bringingpe op le tog ether. In the proc ess of sharing a me al, ba rriers c ould b ebroken dow n and c omm onality found. Another aspec t we wa nted toexplore w as the role tha t c om munity kitc hens c an play in building strong erc om munities. By providing a spa c e fo r me an ingful relationships to fo rm,pa rticipants built strong soc ial networks and po oled tog ether informationand resource s. These relat ionships we re espec ially imp orta nt fo r tho se innewc omer and low-inco me a reas.

Everyonepitche s in, and those tha t enjoy c ooking all gettogether in the fantastic kitchen facilities.Child ren ge t the c ha irs and tables set up , whileothe rs ta ke part in othe r ac tivities .

    social atmoshphere to share informationand resources. Neighb ours c an orga nizesha red trips to the groc ery store using ac ar, a luxury not m any ha ve.     When youre cooking, you dont have to worry aboutanything else that happened today, youre just

From this sta rting point, thecommunity kitchen established itself asan integral part of the neighb ourhood .

    A dedicated g roup ofvo lunteers is instrume nta l to

    the lead ership a nd d irec tionof the p rogram. The f irstFriday of eve ry mo nth thekids a re responsible fo rc arrying o ut the c ookingduties while orga nizersattend a p lanning mee ting.Mee tings involve c om ing upwith c reative w ays to ra isemo ney like offering c ate ringservices to nea rbybusinesses, a nd d isc ussingground rules for pa rticipan ts.

    opportunity for socializing. Each participantpa id a sma ll fee to c over the co st of thefood and the leftover food was dividedam ong st the p artic ipants.

    The group d ec ided to bec ome amore formalized c omm unitykitchen bec ause the pa rticipa ntswere really enjoying spending timeat the c omm unity centre andbringing foo d ho me for their

    families.

    In years since, NYCHs c om munitykitchen program s have expande dto b ec ome multi-lingual and try toinc orporate informa tion on othercommunity resources.

    The participants were

    getting more confidence.Id refer them to othercommunity services.They were more open.
