RHS Sweet Pea Trial and Award of Garden Merit Demonstration 2015

Objectives:

To assess, compare and demonstrate the cultivation of a range of seedlings and named cultivars submitted by professional and amateur breeders. To recommend plants for the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit and Exhibition Awards.

To demonstrate the range of Sweet Peas which already hold the Award of Garden Merit.

Location: RHS Garden, Wisley, Woking, Surrey, GU23 6QB.

Cultivation:

Seed was chitted and sown under glass on 12th December 2014. Entries were pricked out on 22nd-23rd December 2014 and at this stage a bio-fungicide (Serenade) drench was used. The plants were moved to the cold frames to be hardened off on 20 January 2014. They were fleeced over to protect them from the cold as and when necessary.

A small number of entries suffered with poor germination and seeds were re-sown as necessary to ensure the correct number of plants was produced for the trial.

A soil analysis was undertaken and the pH was found to be a little high at pH (7.5) but the use of sulphate based fertilisers helped to reduce this.

Base dressings of sulphate of potash for potassium at 50g/m 2 and kieserite for magnesium at 20g/m 2, were applied for optimum levels on 19th March 2015.

The plants were gradually hardened off before being planted out on 7th (all bushes and open ground miniatures), and 9th-12th (miniatures in containers and hanging baskets) April 2015.

The trial was planted through landscape fabric to prevent weeds and also to help preserve moisture in the soil. Irrigation pipes were placed underneath the landscape fabric and irrigation was applied when necessary.

The following sprays were used on the trial:

18th June – mix of preventative fungicide Systhane (active ingredient Myclobutanil) and insecticide Aphox (active ingredient Pirimicarb) against aphids

The following sprays were used on the plants after the final assessment:

8th July - insecticide Aphox (active ingredient Pirimicarb) against aphids

No spray damage (from spray drying on flower petals) was noted during the course of the trial.

Final Report for Trial No. 2016 – Sweet Peas 2015 3

Bush grown entries These plants were supported by wire frames and allowed to develop naturally without removal of tendrils, side-shoots or flowers. The wire frames were made using 3 x 2.4m (8ft) bamboo canes and wire deer fencing with 20cm x 20cm squares. Using a piece of wire fencing 7 squares wide, a cylinder shape is made. This ends up being approximately 45cm in diameter. The lower section is put in place first and a bamboo cane is pushed approx. 30cm (1ft) into the ground to support it.

The top section is constructed in the same way and weaved onto the first. The remaining 2 bamboo canes are pushed into place to hold the 2 sections together. The cane and wire are tied together at the top, middle and bottom to secure them further. The bushes are spaced 1m apart with 2m between each entry group.

As the plants grew, they were simply tied up with loops of twine around the frame as and when required.

Entries in Containers and Hanging Baskets Some of the dwarf entries were grown in containers and hanging baskets to demonstrate their versatility. These were planted 6 per container or hanging basket.

26 June 2015

Deadheading

All entries were regularly deadheaded to prevent seed-pods developing and to encourage repeat flowering.

Meteorological Report and Findings:

February 2015 was cooler (mean daily temperature 4.4C) than the long term monthly mean (mean daily temperature 5.3C) and 1-2cm of snow fell on 3rd February. March and April were both dry, sunny months at Wisley. May had above average rainfall (2015 saw 51.6mm vs long-term mean for May of 46.1mm). However all this rain was recorded on just 10 days. June 2015 saw slightly cooler than average conditions with a series of periods of warm then cooler spells. This coupled with 3 days of recoded grass frost seemed to slow the growth of the plants. June was also particularly dry and sunny so the drip irrigation was used when required.

Final Report for Trial No. 2016 – Sweet Peas 2015 4

A few plants were removed from the trial as they were exhibiting symptoms of mosaic virus.

Aphids did not cause a problem in this year's trial. Cultivation and maintenance had been just right and there had been a lot more flowers every week than some of the Advisory Group members ever remembered seeing in the history of the trial. The bushes looked very good and the intermediate birch obelisks looked excellent. In all it was considered to have been a perfect trial this year.

Records:

A record was made of the date of the first flowers and 50% flowering. Judging:

Each entry was assessed by 2 teams of RHS Sweet Pea Advisory Group members. Each of the 2 team leaders represented the final recommendations made by their team for each trial entry and voted on possible awards. The trial was assessed on 18th and 24th June and 2nd July 2015. The criteria used for judging were: general visual impact; vigour and health of plants; quality and quantity of blooms; trueness of colour; scent; length of flowering season.

Plants Receiving AGMs During Trial

The following are the plants thought to fulfil the Award of Garden Merit criteria during the trial and to be worthy of receiving the award. The criteria which a plant needs to fulfil in order to receive the award are:

excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions available of good constitution essentially stable in form and colour reasonably resistant to pests and diseases

Those entries which had received at least 1 vote in favour from team leaders were voted on by all members of the Advisory Group to confirm the recommendation. In order to receive an Award of Garden Merit, a sweet pea cultivar must perform well for two flowering seasons and receive a 3 to 1 voting majority. Hardiness ratings are as follows: H2= tender: cool or frost-free greenhouse (1°C to 5°C). Tolerant of low temperatures, but will not survive being frozen. Except in frost-free inner-city areas or coastal extremities, requires glasshouse conditions in winter, but can be grown outdoors once risk of frost is over. In the descriptions below, the number codes after the colour names refer to the RHS Colour Chart.

The Advisory Group re-confirmed the Society's AWARD OF GARDEN MERIT with the recommendation of re-trial in a future trial: ‘Hannah’s Harmony’ AGM (H2) 1996 (trial entry 9). Rogued, some plants true to type. It was

recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial. ‘Solway Sapphire’ AGM (H2) 2006 (syn. ‘Solway Blue Vein’) (trial entry 14). Members agreed that

this entry, received as ‘Solway Blue Vein’, was the same as ‘Solway Sapphire’. Rogued. 1 rogue / 2 types of plant present. The darker one was true. It was recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial.

‘Jilly’ AGM (H2) 1994 (trial entry 23). Rogued. It was recommended that the RHS request this from another supplier for re-trial.

‘Mary Mac' AGM (H2) 2012 (trial entry 24). Rogued. It was recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial.

‘Somerset Lady’ AGM (H2) 2014 (trial entry 30). Rogued. It was recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial.

‘Just Julia’ AGM (H2) 2012 (trial entry 33). Rogued. It was recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial. Colour description confirmed as “mid blue”.

‘Bristol’ AGM (H2) 1999 (trial entry 36). Some grandiflora type blooms present. It was recommended that the RHS request this from another supplier for re-trial.

‘Charlie’s Angel’ AGM (H2) 1993 (trial entry 37). Some grandiflora type blooms present. It was recommended that the RHS request this from another supplier for re-trial. Colour description confirmed as “pale blue”.

‘Evening Glow’ AGM (H2) 1996 (trial entry 43). Rogued. It was recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial.

‘William Willson’ AGM (H2) 2004 (trial entry 47). Rogued. It was recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial.

‘Jacqueline Heather’ AGM (H2) 2014 (trial entry 48). Rogued. It was recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial.

‘America’ AGM (H2) 1995 (trial entry 57). Rogued. It was recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial. Colour description confirmed as “crimson striped white”.

‘Sicilian Pink’ AGM (H2) 1995 (trial entry 62). Rogued. Due to the large mix of different plants it was recommended that the RHS request this from another supplier for re-trial.

‘Wretham Pink’ AGM (H2) 2008 (trial entry 63). Rogued. It was recommended that the sender reselect it and the RHS request it for re-trial.

The Advisory Group recommended that the following should have their AGM removed:

‘Solway Fanfare’ AGM (H2) 1996 (trial entry 12). Reason: flowers are too big for the size of the plant, not in balance. Squat habit (has acacia leaves with no tendrils to pull it up through the birch supports) with few flowers.

‘Solway Lullaby’ AGM (H2) 2004 (trial entry 13). Reason: weak vigour with poor floral impact.

Final Report for Trial No. 2016 – Sweet Peas 2015 10

Exhibition Awards: Those entries which had received at least 1 vote in favour from team leaders were then voted on by all members of the Advisory Group to confirm the recommendation.
