Introduction

• I was a chemistry teacher in a private school in Shanghai.• In our school, students age from 12-18, 6 grade to 12 grade • I taught 9 grade chemistry. Usually I taught 120 students, 40 in each

class. • Most of my colleagues are technology immigrants.

Why Technology + Education?

Technology in

Education

We are living in a world full of

technologies!

We are teaching the

Net Gen!

The Net Gen love

technologies!

• “The flipped classroom refers to a model of learning that rearranges how time is spent both in and out of class to shift the ownership of learning from the educators to the students.” (Horizon Report 2014 Higher ED)

≤ 1Year: Flipped Classroom

How it relates to • Constructivist approach• Progressive pedagogies

≤ 1Year: Flipped Classroom

Enhances knowledge and solves problems

Practice knowledge to make learning authentic

2-3 Years: Games and Gamification• “Gamfication — the integration of gaming elements, mechanics,

and frameworks into non-game situations and scenarios for training and motivational purposes — has added another level of complexity to discussions surrounding the potential of games to transform teaching and learning.” (Horizon Report 2014 K-12)

Games and Gamification can be an ideal way in learning

and training; especially effectively designed games can stimulate

large gains In productivity and creativity among

learners.

People are more

persistent and concentrated when they are playing games.

Learning can be as

fun as gaming

We collaborate together to create solutions in real-world simulation

games!

2-3 Years: Games and Gamification

Problem solving and goal oriented

Collaborative working in games

2-3 Years: Games and GamificationExample: • Chemikul (http://www.learn4good.com/games/educational-learning-activities/chemistrygame.htm)

Page 14: Final Project_Tracy Yuan

2-3 Years: Games and GamificationExample: • pH Scale (https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/ph-scale)

Organize inboxes

4-5 Years: Virtual Assistant

• “Virtual assistants employ artificial intelligence and natural language processing to provide people with support for a wide range of daily activities, and the prospect of virtual assistants that adapt to students’ learning needs and preferences makes the technology one worth following closely over the n .” (Horizon Report 2014 Higher ED)

4-5 Years: Virtual Assistant

How it relates to • Constructivist approach• Progressive pedagogies Highly personalized

education accounting for each individual’s

personal goal

De-emphasis on textbooks in

favor of varied learning

resources

Learner-centered; learners actively

involved and are more in charge of the

learning process

Page 18: Final Project_Tracy Yuan

4-5 Years: Virtual AssistantExample: • Student Virtual Assistant Services (http://www.studentvirtualassistant.com/index.php)
