Final Project: Interior/Exterior

PREPARE:

The assignment: Create a 5 series of photos with the theme interior/exterior. Thegoal is to engage the viewer to consider the relationship between the interior andexterior of the people or objects within the photographs.

The topic is very deep, when we talk about interior/exterior, we think about a

duality or maybe a contrast. Interior exterior can be understood as:

1) Inside/outside:

Reflections

“Munich” (2005) (Dir. S. Spielberg; DP J. Kaminski)

His shot combines two Spielberg hallmarks: the use of window reflections and

the coverage of a scene in a single uncut master shot. This technique shows theinside of the car and what’s going on outside.

Gueorgui Pinkhassov Series:

I find these series of photos interesting because they deal with our theme, whichis interior/exterior, perceived as inside/outside. In fact, in almost of his photos, thephotographer chose a framing with capturing what is going indoor as well asoutdoor.

Windows and doors

Windows and doors are everywhere: we are bombarded with them on a dailybasis. That can be a good idea for expressing the transition between what isinterior and what is exterior.

Convex / Concave:

In definition is:Concave: hollowed or rounded inward like the inside of a bowlConvex: curved or rounded like the exterior of a sphere or circle

Boundaries / Border:

I am fascinated about borders and boundaries especially between nations andplaces. Boundaries are usually built by human kinds to specify what are the

limits. “Borders are more than lines cutting across maps; rather, they are wide

swaths of ambiguity and reversibility where identities are broken down andreassembled” -- Transgressing the Limit: Borders and Liminality in Philosophyand Literature, Dylan Winchock & Jessica Mayock

Thinking about borders let me ask a couple of questions in relation to our themeof which the interior and which is the exterior relatively to a given nationality andwhat are the new issues nowadays when we begin to talk about the concept ofglobal citizenship.

As tensions grew between the Soviet bloc and the western allies, passagebetween the zones shrank to a trickle. In 1961, the split was formalized with theconstruction of a wall. These East German troops and workers are increasing the

Interior/ exterior could be understood by what the viewer see

and what it’s really means. That’s can go from lineament of

Stories through photos:

Duane Michals, Death comes to the Old Lady, 1969

I really like how Duane Michael uses series of photos to tell stories and

expressing his intent clearly. This photographer was always dealing with topicsabout death. His stories are seldom literal, but always relevant “Photography tome is a matter of thinking rather than looking” he says, “it’s revelation, notdescription”. Durant all the series, the old woman remains the same while theblack suited man comes and leaves who is symbolizing “death”. It is like thewoman can only stay and wait her day coming.

Prototype:After changing a couple of time of ideas going from a series of photos that createa story with a hidden intent, to a concave/convex idea of photos that handlescomplexity between interior and exterior in three dimensions, I end up with the

idea of the diptychs of the hidden meaning.

A preview about Concave/convex ideaThe idea of interior exterior is mainly showed through the way I will present the

photos on a half of sphere. Some photos present a depth using a symmetrical

perspective, and some of them present closeness. This will create a confusion ofgoing toward the frame (inside, interior...) and going backward the frame(outside, exterior…)

At the end, as I said that the two other idea were not enough clear andexpressing my intent very well. I thought about the plan C and execute the idea Ifinally selected. I organized my small studio and begin shooting:

Aperture: f/5.6, Shutter Speed: 1/60, ISO 1250, Focal Length: 112

Given this strong idea and a clear expression of intent through the photos, mychoice was confirmed; let’s talk about the post-processing with Adobe

Photoshop.

PRODUCE:

To show perfectly the comparison within the frame of my diptych, I tried to put mysubject matter equal in size in both photos and present the same placement inthe frame. I was obliged to use Adobe Photoshop for that because I wasn’t ableto use a tripod during the shooting. I used a low transparency and put one overthe other and resized it. Concerning the lighting too, I gave it an importance andwas sure to not change the exposure setting neither the white balance to get amatched colors. But I find myself, correcting some area’s color using the color

balance tool and the masks.

PRESENT:

The presentation will be in class using PowerPoint. So I have just uploaded myphoto in the presentation and write my name, the photograph’s name and thedate.

I was trying to find something has two facts to hit the reason of the final project. Icame up with a clear idea of objects that could have a hiding part in it. So Ifocused on. Alcohol, coffee and cigarettes are things we see a lot around campusand in the daily and weekly life. A lot of students are drinking alcohol for fun ormaybe for other hiding reasons. That’s why I chose it to show the viewers thatthere is a lot of people are drinking for specific reason but the hiding fact is; theywill never ever find the happiness or the fun they are looking for in drinking

alcohol. Coffee is something that we’re using in our daily life and for me in themorning and it’s usually student’s are using it to focus on something or to stay

awake to keep working on something. The hiding part here is the reason madestudent’s drink a lot of coffee, which is school and studying. My last photo is the

cigarettes and how it’s wasting the money that’s why I chose to burn it torepresent wasting.

My final intent is to present a set of objects used daily in a diptych and show acomparison of what they physically look like (exterior) and what are their hiddenmeanings from my point of view (interior).
