Background

Past literature shows: Risks for African American youth are cumulative

(Farmer, Price, Neal, Leung, Goforth, Cairnes, & Reese, 2004)

African American youth were found to be more likely to have an earlier onset of sexual activity, antisocial characteristics, anxious/depressed parents, and were more likely to become teen parents than other adolescents (Wei 1999)

More than ¼ of adolescents are open to the idea of having sex in middle school (Guilamo-Ramos, Jaccard, Dittus, Bouris, Holloway, Casillas, 2007)

Background

Past literature shows

Increasing self-esteem and internal locus of control can aid in reducing teen pregnancy rates (Hipps, 1997)

Youth are knowledgeable about AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but are inconsistent in their protection behaviors because they felt other stressors in life such as poverty, drugs, and crime were more important to worry about than safe sex (Washington, 2003)

Intervention

“Encourage the development of specially designed self-esteem workshops for African-American teenagers that would strengthen their social negotiating skills from a cultural perspective. This would give young people the added strength needed to fight, literally, any inducements detrimental to their future positive development.”
