Industry Analysis

Industry Background and overview

The solid waste management industry we see today is a lot of different from what it was about 20

years ago. The historical approach of waste management on the systematic disposal of waste

materials through landfills and incineration. Nowadays, modern waste management approaches

increasingly focus on “source reduction” and “recycling” of waste materials, generating more job

Page 5: Final Project 2014

opportunities in the waste management process. More specifically, the latest and mostly used

waste management approach is Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) which involves a

combination of source reduction, waste collection, waste transportation, recycling and

composting, and disposal.

Significant trend:

Trend 1:  Strong Industry Growth

The amount of waste generated is increasing fast and the waste management industry is getting

bigger and bigger. The current worldwide waste generation is around 1.3 billion tons a year.

Between 2004 and 2006, the waste management industry grew by 17 percent in terms of

revenues. In 2010, there were approximately 70,000 waste management professionals working in

the industry. This number is expected to increase by 6 percent, around 4,000 new positions

annually.

Trend 2: Greater Public Awareness

These days, the general public is more sensitive to the negative impact of unsystematic waste

disposal. And that is why society is generally very cooperative to waste management

organizations and authorities. In fact, public awareness plays a very important role in waste

source reduction. Overall, people are shifting from the consumption of products that generate

waste materials to the consumption of products that can easily be recycled and composted.

Trend 3: Increased Regulations

With the increasing amount of waste being generated, there is no alternative to systematic

disposal and recycling of waste materials. So, both local authorities and environmental

organizations are imposing strict waste management regulations.

Trend 4:  Increased Use of Technology

With the advent of sophisticated technologies, solid waste management has become easier and

more efficient than ever before. A wide range of waste management technologies have evolved

Page 6: Final Project 2014

in the fields of waste collection, transportation, and disposal, including land filling, composting,

recycling and incineration.

Trend 5:  Increasing Demand for Skilled Manpower

Previously, the waste management industry relied heavily on manual labor. With the advent of

sophisticated waste management technologies, however, the demand has greatly increased for

skilled workers with competencies to support not only waste disposal, but also waste distraction

using latest technologies efficiently. Many skills currently required for waste management jobs

are not traditionally related to waste management. Sustainable planning and urban design,

monitoring waste disposal and reduction programs, alternative or sustainable transportation are

some of the new activities in the field of waste management. So in the current waste

management industry, there is a noticeable shift from demand of only manual labor to demand of

increasingly more educated individuals who have the leadership skills and wide-ranging

expertise essential for management positions.

Key success factors:

Company Product and services

Product and services description

The main raw materials that will be used by us including:

Plastic

Glass

Paper

Metal

Solid waste management services collect, process, and dispose of solid waste. Usually, a solid

waste management services to help municipalities businesses to manage solid waste by

coordinating several activities. These activities include: source reduction, recycling and

composting, and disposal in landfills or waste combustors. Source reduction alters the design,

Page 8: Final Project 2014

manufacture, or use of products to reduce the amount and toxicity of trash or garbage.

Recycling diverts items such as paper and metals from the waste stream. Solid waste collection

and scrap collection allows recycled materials to be processed into new products. Composting

is a naturally occurring process that decomposes organic waste to produce humus like

substance. Proper solid waste disposal requires waste characterization, the description of

chemical and physical properties, either directly or indirectly.

Uniqueness:

We are the initiators of this new kind of business plan

Save natural resources

Conserve energy

Reduce pollution

Reduce the toxicity of our waste

Raw material suppliers:

As we know that the raw material is one of the most important factor for and organization to

perform because without the raw material a firm cannot continue its production as well as

sales. So the suppliers from which we will collect the required raw material will be the garbage

and waste collecting company from which we will get the waste bottles, papers and sheet on

weekly contract basis. On the other hand our customers will also be our suppliers as they can

bring us the old useless things kept idle at their homes and we can use them as our raw material

and recycle and refinish them into new form, apart from customers and garbage collectors, we

will also buy some of the raw material from the market and these things will be sprays, beads,

glue threads etc.

Customer Benefit

Our material is cleaner than others because it is already separated so that is why it is easy

to make more quality material for customer. It is also cost benefit because customer will

get it at less cost it is very benefit for manufacturing of raw material from this waste

material. For making new products it is also useful.

Supplier Benefit

Environment getting clean, we also provide daily services. Another benefit is that It is

dispose nearly they don’t need to go far away. In solid waste management a primary

health benefit is the control of vermin that spread disease. By consolidating residential

and some types of commercial wastes, then using appropriate disposal technology

habitat is reduced, or nearly eliminated, for rodents and insects that otherwise pose a

public health risk. Another health benefit is the control of disposal methods that prevent

random burning or burial methods that could pose long term and acute health risks.

Markets

Target Market:

Our target market is Wapda town geographically. Demographically target market is

kitchen waste and commercial waste and other waste categories are not present in wapda

town. Therefore we selected only two:

Kitchen waste:

Kitchen waste includes paper and board. The waste of kitchen is more than commercial

waste. As there are the population of more than 30,000 and most population is based on

household so kitchen waste is more available than the commercial waste. There are

almost 3910 residential plots in wapda town area so kitchen waste are more available in

wapda town.

Commercial waste:

Segmentation Variables and breakdowns for Wapda Town Gujranwala

Page 13: Final Project 2014

Commercial waste includes paper and plastic. It is not more than kitchen waste because

commercial plots are less than kitchen waste in wapda town area. There are almost 90

commercial plots in wapda town so that is why commercial waste is less than kitchen

waste.

Customer motivation

Our material is cleaner than others because it is already separated so that is why it is easy

to motivate customers. We will also offer more quality material for customer which will

help us to motive the customers as well. Last but not least it is also cost benefit because

this waste material.

Supplier Motivation

Supplier motivation is very important so we provide daily services for motivating the

supplier. We dispose material nearly so the supplier doesn’t need to go far away. In solid

waste management a primary health benefit is the control of vermin that spread disease.

So there is more chance to protect health which is the best tool of motivation for the

supplier.

Market size and trends:

Our market size is only wapda town there are almost 4000 plots 3910 are residential plots

and 90 are the commercial plots with the population of 30,000. Our market trends

Porter’s five forces of Competitive Position

New Market Entrants

May be the entry but do not disturb us because we are doing specifically

Page 15: Final Project 2014

Entry of competitors:

Well new entrance in the market is easy but fortunately we will not disturb by any new

entrants because we are doing our project in specific area. Solid waste manamenet is vast

New Market Entrants

Page 16: Final Project 2014

business now a days so new entry may be in the field of solid waste management but it

will not disturb us so much because we are focusing on specific area which is Wapda

Town.

Thread of substitute:

There is no such as thread of substitute because the product/raw material we using is very

cheap so there is no major thread of our business. We are getting the raw material easily

as we are focusing the residential or commercial plots of wapda town so it is easy for us

to collect the raw material so that is why there is no thread of substitute.

Bargaining power of buyer:

Buyer choice always matters by purchasing because customers always buy the product

which satisfies their needs. Lack of knowledge of buyer, less demanding, and price

conscious buyers have very little bargaining power.

Bargaining power of supplier:

As the raw material is very cheap and easily available in abundance available without any

diversification therefore suppliers have little bargaining power. Relationship with

customers is also a factor affecting the bargaining power of supplier a strong relationship

can reduce bargaining power of supplier.

Rivalry among existing players:

In our field there is not such specific competitors because we are doing our project in

specific location Wapda town so in our area these is not such competition effecting us.
