Dear Colleagues and Friends,
We would like to extend a warm welcome to all the participants of VeniceArrhythmias 2019.
For this 16th Anniversary of the International Workshop on Cardiac Arrhythmias we expect more than 1000 attendees, coming from over 60 countries.
The aim of the Workshop is to exchange the state-of-the-art information on the diagnosis and management of patients with cardiac arrhythmias, and to present and discuss the most recent advances in the field of basic and clinical cardiac electrophysiology and pacing.
The Scientific program is developed within 3 days in 6 concurrent meeting rooms run by the most worldwide recognized leaders for a total of about 70 sessions.
The program is organized in different sessions: from main symposia to debates, lectures, satellite events, oral and poster communications and allied professionals program.
The meeting will also include special Corner Sessions on different topics, prepared in cooperation with Scientific Societies or representatives of geographic areas, didactic teaching Core Curricula with up-to-date information and relevant clinical implications.
Besides the scientific agenda, the Workshop will give you the opportunity to meet your colleagues, discover the latest innovations of the sector and meet the representatives of medical companies.
We urge you not to miss, among the others, the Opening Ceremony with the Distinguished Scientist and the Distinguished Teacher Golden Lionel Awards, the Best Abstract Awards (Best Poster and Best Oral communication) and the Award in memory of Raffaella Pieri in Cenacolo Room at Fondazione Cini on October 3rd.
The unique setting of the Giorgio Cini Foundation, our Congress venue, is an integrating part of the whole VeniceArrhythmias experience: it certainly represents the ideal surrounding for reflection and study and will definitely favour socialization and friendship between faculty and attendees.

Distinguished Scientist Golden Lionel AwardAward to José Jalife
José Jalife, MD, is a Distinguished Senior Scientist and Chief of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Laboratory at the Cen-tro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) Carlos III in Madrid, Spain. He is also an Emeritus Professor of Internal Medicine and Emeritus Professor of Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Jalife enjoys an international reputation as a leader in the study of cardiac arrhythmias. His work has increased the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachy-cardia/fibrillation and sudden cardiac death. He has published more than 340 original papers and review articles, and has edited/authored sixteen books, including the internationally acclaimed, Cardiac Electro-physiology: From Cell to Bedside, now in its seventh edition. His work has led to the development of novel technologies and treatment strategies, some of which have resulted in several patents and a start-up venture. Throughout his career, Dr. Jalife has trained more than 120 students who have worked in his laboratory for research careers at nearly all educational levels, including pre-graduate, pre-doctoral students for PhD de-grees, medical students, post-doctoral trainees, medical residents, clinical fellows and junior faculty. In 2009, the Heart Rhythm Society awarded Dr. Jalife the Distinguished Scientist Award. Other accolades include the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American College of Cardiology, the Lucian Award for Research in Cir-culatory Diseases from McGill University, the President’s Award for Research at SUNY Upstate Medical Uni-versity, the Professor Pierre Rijlant Award from the Académie Royale de Médecine de Belgique in Brussels, Belgium, the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, the Mirowski Award of Excellence in the field of Clinical Cardiology and Electrophysiology, and the Arthur C. Guyton Distinguished Lecturer Award of Association of Chairs of USA Departments of Physiology. Between 2010 and 2012, he served as President of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society. Dr. Jalife is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society, honorary member of the Mexican National Academy of Medicine, and elected member of the Association the American Association of Physi-cians. Between 2010 and 2012 he served as President of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society. In 2015, he was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Valencia, and in 2018 was elected member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Valencia, Spain. This year he received a University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center Directors’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
Distinguished Teacher Golden Lionel AwardAward to Mauricio Scanavacca
Mauricio Ibrahim Scanavacca graduated in Medicine, at the Medical Sciences School of Santos, São Paulo - Brazil, in 1978. He was approved for the training program in General Clinical Medicine at the Clinics Hospital of the University of Sao Paulo - School of Medicine (FMUSP) and then, for the training program in Clinical Cardiology, at the Heart Institute (InCor - FMUSP). He began his specialization in Electrophysiology, in 1984. After the development and conclusion of his doctoral thesis and an intensive dedication in prac-tical and academic Electrophysiology, he obtained the title of Professor of the University, in 1997. He has been working in Cardiac Arrhythmias and Interventional Electrophysiology in the same Institution, until nowadays. Together with Professor Eduardo Sosa, from 1985, he participated in the develop-ment of surgical and catheter mapping and ablation of arrhythmias in Brazil and trained many young cardiologists in Electrophysiology, disseminating the knowledge all over his country, as well as in other countries of South America. They were co-inventors of the percutaneous access to the epicardium, in 1995, for mapping and ablating ventricular tachycardias and have trained many electrophysiologists worldwide. This technique was a great contribution to the specialily and is currently being applied for many other types of arrhythmias.Dr. Scanavacca was President of the Brazilian Society of Cardiac Arrhythmias (2002-2003) and mem-ber of the Deliberative Counseling of the same institution (2004- 2009). Affiliated to the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, he is Associated Editor of the “Brazilian Archives of Cardiology” (Arq Brasil Cardiol) in the Arrhythmia’s area. Current Director of the Arrhythmia and Pacing Unit of the Heart Institute - InCor - since 2012, after Dr. Sosa’s retirement, he is member of the Heart Rhythm Society, European Heart Rhythm Association and Latin America Heart Rhythm Association. In the Heart Institute of Sao Paulo University (InCor), he is the responsible for the Post-Graduation Program in Arrhythmias and for the “Clinical - Surgical Nucleus of Arrhythmias, Electrophysiology and Pacing”.
