CELL PHONE USAGE TODAYTODAY THE USE FOR CELL PHONES HAVE

BEEN CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY

cELL PHONE COMPANIES SOON REALIZED THAT THEY COULD PACK MANY FEATURES INTO SMALLER DEVICES, CREATING WHAT WE NOW CALL THE SMART PHONE.

CELL PHONE CREATORS QUICKLY BEGAN TO START ADDING FEATURES TO PHONES.

FIRST WITH VOICEMAIL, EMAIL, PAGERS, FAX MACHINE, AND ADDRESS BOOK.

NOW WE USE CELL PHONES TO DO EVERYTHING FROM BROWSING THE INTERNET, TAKING PHOTOS AND VIDEOS, TEXTING, AND UPDATING OUR SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT.

ALL THIS IS NOW DOWN MORE THAN CALLING IS TODAY.

CELL PHONE COMPANIES SOON BEGAN TO CREATE PHONES WITH BETTER SCREENS, SPEAKERS, AND SOFTWARE.

STUDENTS CAN DOWNLOAD APPS to help with homework, and can download specific apps for the school they attend. For example us students at georgian college can download the blackboard app, banner app, student email app, and the remind app.

Specific apps can be downloaded to teach toddlers, children, teenagers and adults specific things to help them grow.

● Society has become addicted to the content and information they can get at their fingertips.

● Cyberbullying has increased due to the rise in society joining social media.

Definition of neurosis- “also called psychoneurosis a functional of anxiety, obsessional thoughts, compulsive acts, and physical complaints without objective evidence of disease, in various degrees and patterns, dominate the personality” (the dictionary. 2016).

How neurosis has been a factor of cell phones

Page 10: Final presentation for online class

Negative Impact on pre teens and

teens

● Teenagers have become extremely addicted to the content, and to their phone in general. This has caused the creation of an obsessive society.

● Teenagers have become addicted to their cell phone and the need to update their social media status, and compete with their peers. This is causing them to develop mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, Obsessive compulsive disorders, eating disorders, etc..

● Today high school students have a role to fill in society of attending post secondary school. Many teenagers have their cellphones with them at every second of the day. This allows for them to access information extremely easily and fast. Thus being said, they have an easier ability to cheat during test, just to get perfect or the desired marks to fulfil the pressure of furthering their education.

● Sleep patterns in teens have been extremely impacted by cell phone usage. This has caused for many teens to develop insomnia.

● Texting anxiety is a new form of anxiety that has been found- this is when people develop anxiety due to texting people and not getting replies when they want, or not getting the reply they wanted to hear.

● Sexting and sending out sexual photos of oneself is a new dilemma that society has seen within teens. This has caused to damage teens reputations and their self esteem, causing signs of depression, and can also lead to eating disorders.

How social media apps play a role in neurosis development in teens

Has caused for the pressure to be perfect.

Pressure to make themselves available 24/7, to keep their social lives “popular”.

Due to the fact that teenagers are staying up, and waking up all hours of the night to check in with their peers and idols, to check their social media, is causing sleep deprivation. This is leading to depression, irritability, and are more prone to becoming sick with the flu and colds.

Studies have shown, that more girls than boys look to social media sites for help when feeling down, or needing advice.

Mainly in teenage girls, social media sites have caused a huge pressure on them to be perfect, with perfect hair, body, teeth, boyfriend, etc... when they don’t feel they fit this role of perfection, studies have shown this is when eating disorders being, and they begin to isolate themselves from society.

(udorie, j. 2015)

Page 12: Final presentation for online class

Social isolation- “the complete or near complete lack of contact with people and society for members of social species.

Page 13: Final presentation for online class

Social isolation due to cell phone social media

Today society holds a large impact on teenagers. Teens today have very high expectations from their peers, authorities, and themselves. These

expectations have caused for teenagers to develop many mental disorders, one being social isolation. Teenagers are trying to fill this need to be what they are expected to be. But when they get caught up with social media they cannot fill

these expectations how they want. They are expected to sit at home and study, and get a job to save money for post secondary education and

get vehicles, etc.. When teens are scrolling through social media and see their friends, or peers out and about having fun while they are stuck listening to their authorities, working, or

doing other things than socializing, it causes for the teens to feel like they are not wanted or appreciated by their friends, causing them to

distant themselves even more, which will lead to social isolation.

Page 14: Final presentation for online class

How social isolation has been created from phones ● 55 percent of teens have said that they contact their

friends more through text message than they do face to face. This being said, teens have showed signs in not knowing how to properly interact with people one on one.

● Teens are not familiar with how to have formal conversations, because they are so used to texting informally, and when they do have face to face conversations they are not usually formal (Ling, r. 2010).

● Teens have began to isolate themselves away from their families, staying in their rooms for long periods of times, scrolling through social media, watching videos uploaded and shared by their peers, or just being glued to their phones texting and updating friends through social media.

● Eating disorders is becoming a large mental illness in today's society. Studies have shown that due to the need to feel perfect and be exactly like one's peers plays a huge role in eating disorders.

● Teens have access to search specific things through social media regarding eating disorders, making them more vulnerable to developing them. Eating disorders can lead to social isolation in teens because they now feel like they are being judged by their peers, causing them to gain a fear of society ( Ling, r. 2010)

How i've seen social media and cell phones affect neurosis and social

isolation problemsBeing 21, and having 2 younger siblings i have watched the evolution of cellphones grow drastically. I have seen many changes in the behaviour of my siblings and their friends, and i have also witnessed many issues that have arised due to social media. During high school, i myself had gone a couple times with no phone due to the fact that i had broken it, lost it, got it stolen, etc... those days that i went without a phone, i can clearly remember how upset and panicked i had felt. Not having my phone on me made me feel like i was out of the loop with my friends, and those who i went to school with. I felt that i was going to miss so much and could feel myself becoming anxious due to the fact of not having my phone. There is also days when my friends get extremely upset when they view my social media content and notice that they are not included for specific things. My younger siblings are at completely different stages as i am with cell phones and social media, there is times that the internet will go down, and they will begin to get anxious and angry because they cannot talk to their friends, or can’t see what they are doing.
