LITERATURE REVIEW=> Indian Hospital Information Systems (HIS) Market

Date Published: 5 Jan 2006 By Sourabh Kankhar, Research Analyst, Asia

    Pacific Life Sciences Practice

Undoubtedly, Indian hospitals have been very late in realizing the advantages

of information technology (IT). Lack of awareness, the low priority given tofinancing of IT-related investments, lack of suitable solutions, as well as the

absence of professional decision making has led to low penetration of HIS in

    this high-potential market.

There have been many major IT initiatives by hospitals in India. However,

these initiatives have been confined to corporate and high-end private hospitals.

As more healthcare providers in India realize the advantages of implementing

HIS, allocating higher budgets for IT, and making the decision-making

procedure for IT more professional, there will be a huge opportunity for the

    growth of the HIS market.

Apollo Hospitals' Sangita Reddy: 'We Are Innovating with Models ofHealth Care'

    Published: August 15, 2010 in India Knowledge@Wharton

India presents both challenges and opportunities for private companies likeApollo Hospitals, a 50-hospital chain with 8,500 beds. Apollo has alreadyexpanded its reach by using information technology and the mobile phonefor telemedicine, and reengineered its services to lower costs. Its next

endeavour is to help create healthy living environments by promoting cleandrinking water, better sanitation and appropriate immunizations, saysSangita Reddy, executive director, in an interview with India Knowledge @Wharton during the 2010 Wharton India Economic Forum. We haveworked on content. We have given ideas from ApolloLife, a patient portalof sour own. We have taken those concepts and learning, we have worked

on making it more than just static content, but connecting via cell phone, fax, SMS -- whatever you can do to make this alive and pushed into thecommunity. We have put some of those models out there, and I think in thenext 12 to 24 months you will see some impact.

The current model of health service delivery would not achieve its objective of

delivering primary health care to people below the poverty line unless the

government puts in place certain operational measures, to improve the

infrastructure and the administration of the Sri Narasimha Raja DistrictHospital. Research studies have indicated a number of gross inadequacies in

the current operational model of the hospital. Improving the technology, a

proactive role in engaging the community and training the medical personnel

would ensure that the hospital is sustainable in the long run and the poorest of

the poor are provided basic health facilities.

(2009)In comparison, Apollo Hospitals, with about 8,000 beds, is trading at just 24times its trailing 12-month earnings. Besides, Apollo Hospitals is valued at

twice its net sales, calculated on a trailing 12-month basis. The scrip is trading

at twice its book value. On the other hand, Fortis Healthcare, whose business

model is seen as more risky, is valued at thrice its net sales and is trading at a

price that is thrice its book value. So, Fortis is relatively a risky and expensive

bet compared to its more matured and larger peer.

(2009 ) According to public opinion a comparison of fortis with Apollo hospitals.

Market of Fortis is higher even though 1) Apollo has a much bigger presence

and brand. 2) Apollo's sales are double of Fortis even after recent acqusition of

wockhardt.3) Apollo is making real profit from quite some time. But in

healthcare ,apollos healthcare services is providing much better then fortis. Asa conclusion Financial status matters a lot for an hospital but it does not mean if

a hospital is growing very fast and earning profit, will surely provide best

services to their patients. Apollo is providing best services but fortis is focusing

on more and more branches in the country.
