Site Overview

Guiuan (pronounced as Ghi-wan) is a second-class municipality in the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 47,037 people.[3]

Guiuan played a significant part in Philippine history. In the 16th century, when Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines, it is believed that he first landed on the island of Homonhon. It is probably because of this that the majority of the populations of the town are Catholics. The town's church, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, is one of the oldest in the country.

During the Second World War, Guiuan served as one of the Alliance's bases. Now all that is left of the American occupation are concrete slabs which once served as the foundations of a vast supply depot, and an air strip, which now serves as the town's own airport.

As well as a rich historical background, Guiuan has many scenic spots. Being a coastal town on the Pacific side, the town has many white-sand beaches that are suitable for swimming and surfing.

Geography The municipality of Guiuan is located at the southernmost tip of Samar Island. It is bounded on the north by the municipality of Mercedes, on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the south by the Surigao Strait, and on the west by the Leyte Gulf.

Clustered around the municipality are numerous islands and islets, like Tubabao, Calicoan, Sulangan, Homonhon and Suluan.

Guiuan is 109 kilometres (68 mi) south of Borongan and 154 kilometres (96 mi) from Tacloban. It has a total land area of 175.49 square kilometres. It is composed of sixty (60) barangays and the only town in the province with biggest number of island barangays.

The Tropical Rainforest Climate Because of the geographical location on the planet, the Philippines has a "Tropical Rainforest Climate" all over the country. ough some rainfall can be expected in every month, e

Rainy Season and Monsoon Though some rainfall can be expected in every month, the rainfall differs greatly through the year. In the period June - October it's raining cats and dogs! The influence of the southwest monsoon is very clear. In the period December - May there is no monsoon anymore. The wind, the "trade wind", is coming from the northeast and brings hardly rainfall.

The two main characteristics of this climate are: high temperatures

high atmospheric humidity Both the high temperatures and the humidity are the whole year through. In theory rainfall can be expected in every month of the year.

Typhoons A third characteristic feature of the climate of the Philippines is the presence of strong typhoons. The Philippines is tortured by typhoons every year. In the whole Western Pacific typhoons occur in the period June - November.

Monsoons and Trade winds The monsoon is a very rainy wind coming from the southwest. The "trade wind", coming from the northeast, is dominating in the period December -May. It's a rather 'dry' wind and brings hardly any rainfall.

Design Approach The approach of designing monolithic structure type of building is to provide a stable and solid form of school and shelter at the same time for the community. the total uniformity of each module sustains the needs of the people for a safer place and durability always comes first to describe it’s appearance. solidity or bulk image proves it’s resiliency in one word.

Aerodynamics

The V formation greatly boosts the efficiency and range of flying birds, particularly over long migratory routes.[1] All the birds except the first fly in the upwash from the wingtip vortices of the bird ahead. The up wash assists each bird in supporting its own weight in flight, in the same way a glider can climb or maintain height indefinitely in rising air. In a V formation of 25 members, each bird can achieve a reduction of induced drag by up to 65% and as a result increase their range by 71%.[2] The birds flying at the tips and at the front are rotated in a timely cyclical fashion to spread flight fatigue equally among the flock members.

Scientists do not know how the birds find that aerodynamic sweet spot, but they suspect that the animals align themselves either by sight or by sensing air currents through their feathers. Alternatively, they may move around until they find the location with the least resistance.

With these statement, school buildings has been designed and arrange not just for the reason of motion uniformity, but to split the air pressure in between spaces to with stand high air pressure from all directions.

ACTUAL SITE SURVEY

                                                 

I have chosen (3) three images based on my actual visit to the site. Image 1 ( from left ) shows the uneven terrain of the site, according to the school principal, this area used to store all water from rain and during wet season this turns to a pool and even bigger, they don’t have proper water exit going to the sea or river nearby. Image 2 ( middle ) shows the small uncovered pathway going to west side of the lot, that shows only few buildings were built. Facing the national highway, basically the school Site is on the top of a hill regardless of the narrow entrance measuring (3) three meters wide and this is used for both, vehicle, student and staff. According to the teacher I have talked With, only seldom chances the entrance road is used for vehicles. Usually vehicles and services waited at the highway, wherein I also found out that the size of the road is for 2 vehicles only, and no space for the students to take a shed during hot and rainy days. Image 3 ( from right ) image has been taken from the entrance, viewing middle part of the site. This is the area where the land level is plain and smooth but all building from where I was standing were also damaged but not as worst as the rest
