FOUNDER OF WALMARTSam Walton was born on March 29, 1918, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He was the first son of Thomas Walton, a banker, and his wife, Nancy Lee. Early in his life Walton and his family moved to Missouri, where he was raised. Upon his graduation from Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri, in 1936, his classmates named him "most versatile boy." After high school, Walton stayed close to home and enrolled at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he graduated with a degree in economics in 1940. Following college, Walton got his first real taste of the retail world when took a job in Des Moines with the J.C. Penney Company, which was still a relatively small retailer. After serving as an Army captain in an intelligence unit during World War II, Walton returned to private life in 1945 and used a $25,000 loan from his father-in-law to acquire his first store, a Ben Franklin franchise in Newport, Arkansas. In less than two decades, Walton, working with his younger brother, James, came to own 15 Ben Franklin stores. Walton was responsible for a lot of the success. His vision of a discount retail store in rural areas was accompanied by the founders hard-charging, demanding style. Walton, who often began his work days at 4:30 in the morning, expected results from those beneath him, and wasnt afraid to change course or reshuffle his personnel if he didnt like the numbers that came back to him. In 1985Forbesmagazine named Walton the wealthiest man in the United States.Over that last several years of his life, Walton suffered from two types of cancer: hairy-cell leukemia and bone marrow cancer. He died of the latter on April 5, 1992, at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. Just a month before his death, Walton was honored by President George H.W. Bush with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.A GLANCE ON WALMARTWal-Mart Stores helps people around the world save money and live better anytime and anywhere in retail stores, online, and through their mobile devices. DIVISION OF WALMART

SAMS CLUB:Sam Walton opened the first Sam's Club in 1983 to meet a growing need among customers who wanted to buy merchandise in bulk. Sams Club supports community-based programs that empower young people, families and small businesses to make smart choices that lead to healthy and bright futures. Through cash and in-kind donations as well as the dedication of our associates, we focus on youth entrepreneurship education, small business support, and health and wellness Like other warehouse clubs, Sam's Club sells most of its merchandise inbulkand directly offpallets. The clubs are arranged much likewarehouses, with merchandise stocked in warehouse-style steel bins. Products sold include jewelry, designer goods, sunglasses, crystal and collectibles, electronics, floral, apparel, food and meats. Most locations have Pharmacy, Tire and Battery, Photo, Bakery, Optical, Caf and Floral departments. Sam's Club markets items under the private labelsSimply Right(FormerlyMember's Mark),Bakers & Chefs, andSam's Club including products byRichelieu Foods,a private label manufacturer of frozen pizza, salad dressing, sauces, marinades, condiments and deli salads. Sam's Club does not sell theSam's ChoiceorGreat Valuebrands, that are available in Walmart stores. However, Sam's Club is changing some of the Member's Mark items, such as baby wipes to the name Simply Right. The Member's Mark Deli products is also changing names to Artisan Fresh. Another notable feature in most locations is the presence of stands at whichShopper Eventsemployees prepare various food products for members to sample before purchasing.

WALMART IN INDIA

Bharti Enterprises tied-up withWalmartfor opening chain ofretailstores all over India. The two companies, in August 2007, made a surprise statement that they have signed a wholesale cash-and-carry deal. The first Best Price Modern Wholesale opened inAmritsarin May 2010. As partners, the two companies jointly built 20 superstores. These superstores are located in major cities such as Amritsar, Zirakpur, Jalandhar, Kota, Bhopai, Ludhiana, Ralpur, Indore, Vijayawada, Agra, Meerut, Lucknow and Jammu. The partnership between Bharti Enterprises and Walmart has been dissolved. But the two companies have now agreed to go their separate ways. Bharti will acquire the Compulsory Convertible Debentures held by Walmart in Cedar Support Services, a company owned and controlled by Bharti. Bharti, which operates 212 stores plans, plans to continue growing independent of Walmart. Bharti indicated that it is committed to building a world class operation and will continue to invest in a retail concept called Easyday. For its part, Walmart will contiunue to operate the 20 superstores opened since 2007 without the benefit of any partnership. However, there is a problem. The Indian government requires retailers to source 30 percent from small suppliers which is difficult for Walmart to comply with. Another problem is the continuing US investigation of fraud in Mexico, Brazil, China and India. In Indian, the government is investigating whether a loan made by Walmart to Bharti broke foreign investment rules.

SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENTIn the 1980s, Walmart began working directly with manufacturers to cut costs and more efficiently manage the supply chain.Under a Walmarts supply chain initiative called Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), manufacturers became responsible for managing their products in Walmarts warehouses. As a result, Walmart was able to expect close to 100% order fulfilment on merchandise. The companys supply chain has only become more effective since then. Walmart embarked on strategic sourcing to find products at the best price from suppliers who are in a position to ensure they can meet demand. The company then establishes strategic partnerships with most of their vendors, offering them the potential for long-term and high volume purchases in exchange for the lowest possible prices.Furthermore, Walmart streamlined supply chain management by constructing communication and relationship networks with suppliers to improve material flow with lower inventories. The network of global suppliers, warehouses, and retail stores has been described as behaving almost like a single firm.Wal-Marts whole thing was collaboration Thats a big part of what made them so successful. Also, Technology plays a key role in Walmarts supply chain, serving as the foundation of their supply chain. Walmart has the largest information technology infrastructure of any private company in the world. Its state-of-the-art technology and network design allow Walmart to accurately forecast demand, track and predict inventory levels, create highly efficient transportation routes, and manage customer relationships and service response logistics.Walmarts supply chain management strategy has provided the company with several sustainable competitive advantages, including lower product costs, reduced inventory carrying costs, improved in-store variety and selection, and highly competitive pricing for the consumer. This strategy has helped Walmart become a dominant force in a competitive global market. As technology evolves, Walmart continues to focus on innovative processes and systems to improve its supply chain and achieve greater efficiency. In short, Supply chain management is moving the right items to the right customer at the right time by the most efficient means and No one does that better than Walmart.

DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM OF WALMARTWalmarts 158 distribution centers are hubs of activity for business. Its distribution operation is one of the largest in the world. Walmart logistics has a fleet of 6,500 tractors, 55,000 trailers and more than 7,000 drivers. A regional distribution center can have up to12 milesof conveyor belts, which can move hundreds of thousands of cases through the facility each day. There are 9 disaster distribution centers, strategically located across the country and stocked to provide rapid response to struggling communities in the event of a natural disaster. Each distribution center is more than 1 million square feet in size, and uses more than 5 miles of conveyor belts to keep products moving to our stores 24 hours a day. Every distribution center supports 90 to 100 stores in a 200-mile radius.

Trucks and Truck DriversWalmart is able to move goods to and from distribution centers because this maintain a private fleet of trucks and a skilled staff of truck drivers.
