Central College Selected as Pilot for Prestigious Academic Program

BALTIMORE – Central College has been selected as one of five institutions of higher

education to participate in a four-year pilot study of long-distance remedial education

called “Early Support.”

The five participating universities and colleges will be part of a network along with high

schools in the region. They will develop remedial education programs to bring high

school juniors and seniors up to college level in reading, writing, math and computer

skills before they enter college.

Central College aims for increased enrollment and funding after implementation of

“Early Support.”

“This is a wonderful way to help struggling high school students who might not get into

college without the program,” says Daniel Craig, director of academic computing and

director of “Early Support” at Central College. “We have high hopes for where this

program will take us.”

Program participants identified by a joint team of high school and college counselors

and foundation analysts at the end of their sophomore year in high school will

participate exclusively in the online program for the final two years of high school.

Courses will be developed and taught online by college personnel and progress will be

monitored and reported at the high school level.

Selected students will attend classes at interactive classrooms set up throughout

Maryland. All equipment for these classrooms will be provided under a grant from the

Federal Educational Resources Commission.

“Central College is also excited to accept admission for all students who perform

satisfactorily in the program,” says Mary C. O’Neil, vice president of academic affairs at

the Central College. “We are looking forward to an increase in academic diversity and

interests at the college.”

The Central College Board of Trustees, lead by President Leon C. DeWitt, approved a

directive to the Admissions Department to raise the admission standards of incoming

freshmen over the next five years; this would make Central College more competitive

with “Ivy-League” caliber institutions.

Central College will collaborate with Towson University, University of Maryland

Baltimore County, Stevenson University and McDaniel College to ensure the success of

the program.

Central College is a liberal arts college founded in 1902 as a higher education institution

in Baltimore, Md. Central College enrolls more than 4,500 full-time students who excel

in numerous programs such as mathematics, English, business and science.
