Missing Basic Documents• Approved Traffic Study, Traffic Counts and Approved Conceptual
DrawingsDespite the effort done thankfully by MPW, We have not received the approved traffic study (by KM and MOI) for the project which should include the Traffic counts (approved by MOI), also we didn’t receive a copy from the approved design presented to KM and MOI.The following is to be noted:• The traffic study for the project is one of the most important fundamental
elements for the design of the project, starting from the number of lanes, determine the level of service, type and configuration of interchanges /intersections.
• The traffic count data that are based on the study of traffic is also a major keyelement to calculate the pavement structure for the different type of roads.
• The approval of design at concept stage by either KM and MOI will avoid anymajor modification during the preliminary stage (Basic Design).

•Transition length for Causeway The KHDM and AASHTO are very clear and strict about the maximum allowable length for the transition curve which shouldn’t exceed √24R in addition to what stated into KHDM,and as per AASHTO, safety problems have been found to occur on spiral curves that are long.
Such cases were investigated as per below table:

• Weigh Bridge at Shuwaikh Area
• The proposed location of weigh Bridge in Shuwaikhinterchange will result in the constraint of the length ofmerge/diverge Taper which is not in line with thedesign standards.
• It will also have an effect on weaving length betweenWeigh Bridge Taper and approach junction with visitorcenter road.
Design Issues (Under Discussion)
MINISTRY OF PUBLIC WORKSRoads administration

• Minimum GradientThe Design criteria for the project clearly mentioned thatthe minimum desirable longitudinal gradient forsatisfactory drainage is 0.5%.The drawings submitted show a minimum gradient 0%.

• Non-reflection of rest areaRest area already built by RA126 project was notconsidered in the Employer’s Concept Design Drawings.
Current design of the Interchange does not comply withKDM requirement and overlapping occurs betweenacceleration lane of vehicles from the ramp of theInterchange and vehicles approaching towards restarea.

• “BASIC DESIGN” REVIEW FINDINGS• Ground Improvement and Embankment Stability
• Subiyah Embankment
• Current ground surface elevation is +3.0m PWD (about 2m of reclamation), deep compaction is not anticipated.
• Improvement of natural compressible (soft clay) foundation soils was considered necessary to meet project serviceability (settlement) requirements.
• Preloading with the use of Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD) was selected as the ground improvement technique.
