From the ClassroomLEGO Education WeDo

The Need The Michael E. Berdy School in New York City researched

many programs that would help prepare their students for the

future. The staff wanted students to be turned on at school

by being engaged in their work and learning to think critically.

They wanted a program that enabled all students gifted

and talented, general, and special needs to work both

collaboratively and independently on projects.

The Solution Principal Fred Tudda and his staff implemented LEGO

Education solutions in their school as part of the daily

instructional program, as an after-school program, as an

enrichment program, and periodically as a Saturday family

program. They chose to include WeDo sets, software, and

curriculum combined with additional brick sets. They made a big

investment, and its yielding big results.

The Results Within the first year of implementation, school attendance

has improved, and there is a noticeable increase in student

engagement and participation. The program is changing the

way students are thinking and the way they are working and

enabling them to develop 21st-century skills. First of all, students

are now thinking critically when reading a book or working on

a math problem. Second, the solutions have changed the way

students are thinking about their futures, discussing college

and professional careers. Third, the program has allowed for

varied student groups to work together. According to Fred, The

program has helped to unify our students and engage their

interests and make learning fun! After all, this is what school

should be about!

in his middle school classroom. The use of robotics to teach

science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) allows

students to be rewarded for effort and creativity. They cant

memorize the correct answer but instead have to use higher-

level thinking skills to solve problems and meet challenges.

As Tom says, Every time the robot does what it is told

(programming), but not what the student intended, they begin to

understand programming and engineering. By being in control

of their learning, they begin to overcome their fears of math and

science. This not only opens their minds to new futures and

careers such as engineering but also teaches them 21st-century

Make a System: Students are challenged to design, build, and program robotics systems built from subsystems. In five projects, students develop systems that move a ball, pick and place objects, simulate manufacturing, sort colors, and communicate their location. Students test their system, gather data, and use that evidence to engineer system optimizations and improvements.

The Need In a traditional learning environment, students

are often asked to master concepts using a pencil-

and-paper approach. All too often this methodology

fails to really capture students attention and engage

them in a learning process resulting in a deeper

comprehension of core content. Years of elementary

teaching experience brought this subject to light for

Breigh Rhodes, a third-grade teacher at Zachary Elementary

in Zachary, Louisiana. Over time, Breigh has come to believe

that students must be actively involved when they are learning.

I find that generally all elementary students learn more

effectively when they are able to use manipulatives and hands-

on applications to construct and shape their learning, shares

Breigh. This is why when it was time to introduce the concept

of simple machines to her classroom, Breigh looked to LEGO

Education.

The Solution LEGO Education solutions provide Breigh with the

manipulatives she needs to teach her students relevant subject

matters, including physical science concepts such as simple

She says, Children love LEGO bricks and enjoy creating, building, and using their creations to tell their story.

The Solution The combination of LEGO elements joined with the interactive software provides a unique opportunity to teach and reinforce elements of reading and writing. Years of poor test scores and low performance led to

Eastlawn Elementary starting this school year in a state of

turnaround. The almost entirely new staff had an important

goal: to improve their school by growing their students. As part

of this school-wide effort, Dr. Whitney Oakley, the schools new

principal, implemented a BuildToExpress specials class that

was both innovative and related to Common Core Standards.

It was important that the class would grow the students

vocabulary and improve writing skills as well as make valid

connections to science, technology, engineering, and math.

After the staff saw a local school experience success with

LEGO Education BuildToExpress, it seemed like the right fit

for the Eastlawn students. According to Dr. Oakley, the level of

engagement and the capacity of the students who had been

trained using the sets as well as their natural collaboration

was what caught her attention. When she returned to Eastlawn,

rather than implementing the product into a few classrooms,

she designed the class schedule so it would be applied school

wide as a specials class that every student (K-5) would get to

attend at least once a week.

From the ClassroomThe NeedAt the Pittsburg State University Early Childhood Preschool Lab on

the campus of Pittsburg State University, Director Kari Cronister

teaches two groups of students. She simultaneously teaches

college students interested in becoming preschool teachers

while also teaching three- to five-year-old preschool students.

This makes for busy days, so its important that the solutions

Kari brings into the classroom address multiple learning standards

while truly engaging students.

The SolutionThe LEGO DUPLO Creative Builder Set, which introduces students

to building with LEGO DUPLO bricks and following simple directions,

supports many key curriculum objectives including exploring shape,

space, position, and numeracy while also encouraging cooperative

building and teamwork. Since implementing the set, Kari has seen

an improvement in the students early math skills, especially

in the area of number recognition. Additionally, the activities

included challenge her preschool students to use descriptive

language to express their thoughts and create narratives about

their builds, supporting early literacy skills. Using the product in

this way has also fostered language development in their non-

English-speaking children. Students are actively learning but are

also having fun with the DUPLO set. Kari said, They quickly

became actively engaged and enjoyed replicating the cards

as well as creating their own masterpieces. Currently, the

set, which supports up to four students at once, is being

used during free-play time, but there are plans to use it at

the light table during their block center and to potentially

create an exclusive center focused on DUPLO Creative

Builder.

The ResultsAll in all, Creative Builder is a great fit for the lab

because both the college and the preschool students

have benefited from working with this user-friendly

set. The college students have gained experience

with a hands-on learning tool that can be used for both

assessments and play, and the preschool students enjoy

the opportunity to be creative and work through the

challenges together. Kari looks forward to expanding the

use of the set in her classroom and creating additional

learning opportunities for all the students, big or small.
