Objective of the Course Welcome to FINA 4500! In this course we will focus on a corporation which makes its investment,
financing and operating decision in an international setting. You will learn about the international
financial and currency markets and monetary system in which domestic and multinational firms operate.
You will also learn about risks and opportunities faced by a corporation as a result of operating in an
international environment. We will cover a wide range of international finance topics. These topics
include: goals of multinational corporations, theories of international business; the international flow of
funds, balance of payments accounting system for nations, the history of exchange rate systems,
fundamentals of foreign exchange markets, the details of international arbitrage relationships,
international parity conditions, measurement and management of foreign exchange risk, making short
and long term financing & investment decisions in a global market..
By the end of this course you should be able to:
1. predict the impact economic factors (such as, inflation, interest rate, GNP, government
policies) will have on the behavior of exchange rates;
2. explain what is exchange rate exposure;
3. explain how exchange rate exposure may create risks and opportunities for a domestic and
multinational firms;
4. explain ways in which national and international political and economic events impact
exchange rate exposure for domestic and multinational corporations;
5. given the firm’s level of exchange rate exposure, prescribe a strategy to manage this risk.
Learning Philosophy In addition to the learning objectives for the course as a whole, my learning goals for each chapter will
be presented to you as a set of chapter-specific learning objectives. This list will handed out to you along
with the chapter outlines prior to the class period in which they will be covered.
I want you to first master the chapter objectives at the rote level. This level of learning accompanies
your initial exposure to knowledge (active keywords: list, define, compute, solve, etc). However, rote
learning is quickly forgotten and is difficult to retrieve with the passage of time. Therefore, more
importantly, I also want you to master these objectives at the meaningful and integrative levels of
learning. Meaningful learning involves the ability to translate across three different language of
2
perception: words (prose); pictures (graphs); and symbols (mathematics) (active keywords: explain in
your own word, illustrate, interpret, etc). Integrative learning is the ability to interrelate concepts. This
way, old information is refreshed by being linked to new information, increasing the retention rate
(active keywords: compare and contrast, evaluate, extrapolate, etc). Most classroom presentations and
in-class exercises will be geared toward mastering the course and chapter objectives at the meaningful
and integrative levels of learning. This course will require you to spend quite a bit of time outside
the class room to THINK THRU THE LOGIC of the subject matter to understand it; It is a very
conceptual course with some problem solving aspects. Very little of TIME VALUE is involved and
so those financial calculators are not necessary for this course.
Background Skills / Knowledge
Finance: Time value of money
Opportunity costs of funds concept
Valuation principles for stocks and bonds
Economics: Supply and demand curve analysis
Opportunity cost concept
Accounting: Debits, credits and T-account conventions
Knowledge of the structure and content of balance sheets and income statements
___________________________________________________________________________________
Key To Success in this course : THIS COURSE IS A COMBINATION OF ECONOMICS (LOT
OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND ANALYSIS USING GRAPHS ), FINANCE , AND SOME
ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES. THIS COURSE REQUIRES YOU TO THINK THROUGH -
AND THAT TAKES TIME. IT IS much more of a CHALLENGING COURSE COMPARED TO
FINA 3770. I WOULD STRONGLY URGE YOU TO ATTEND ALL CLASSES AND NOT
MISS A SINGLE CLASS . Form a STUDY GROUP NOW ; Meet every week , review that weeks
set of material , go over end of chapter exercises , and Old Exam questions found at the end of my
class notes . DO NOT memorize –you must understand all concepts and that takes time . THIS
COURSE WILL CHALLENGE YOU A LOT . It is very conceptual .
OTHER ISSUES: NOT MUCH IN THE FORM OF OLD EXAMS ARE AVAILABLE; The Class
Notes You buy contain One set of my old exam with solutions. ( SEE PAGES 246-274 IN YOUR
CLASS NOTES FOR OLD EXAM WITH KEY);
NO CHEAT SHEET ALLOWED EVER IN ANY EXAM ( I SUPPLY YOU WITH FORMULA
SHEET AND YOU WILL KNOW AHEAD OF TIME WHAT IS ON THE FORMULA SHEET).
THIS MEANS YOU WILL HAVE TO REMEMBER A LOT OF THINGS IN YOUR HEAD.
MOSTLY MULTIPLE CHOICE TYPE QUESTIONS ON YOUR EXAMS.
See Pages 234-239 for FORMULA sheet in your class notes; You will get these pages for your tests
as a handout formula sheet by me.

you need to buy the text book. Also thru this : u can access POWERPOINT presentation of these
chapters by Madura ; and Test bank containing questions by Madura for each chapter.
3. A financial calculator (TI-BAII Plus, HP-10B or equivalent) : OPTIONAL :but you will
definitely need a calculator for this course. Set your calculator to 8 or More Decimal points now
itself; U can use a cheap five function basic calculator also; Calculators play a very very small
role in this course ( a basic five function calculator is all you need ; so those high powered ones
in the market is not needed for this course );
4. Optional : Subscription to Wallstreet Journal at low educational rates .
In-Class Practice During most classes, we will attempt to solve practice problems on topics being discussed in class that
day. At the end of the exercise, I will also go over the correct solutions. To do well in the exams, it is
important that you participate in these exercises. These practice problems are at the end of each
4
chapter in the CLASS NOTES YOU BUY from our bookstores. You do NOT turn them in to me
for any credit; You do them IN CLASS so that you understand the material well . It is very
important that you do all these problems in class or at home before coming to class on a regular
basis ; Also attempt those questions from my old exams which are also at the end of the spiral
bound CLASS NOTES you buy . KEEP TESTING YOURSELF ; FORM STUDY GROUPS with
PEOPLE who seem to understand this material better than you and work with them.
Performance Evaluation Your grade in this course will be determined on the basis of your performance in three components: (1)
a statistical report ; (2) three mid terms exam; (3) a final comprehensive exam. The components are
described in following sections. The weights assigned to each of these components are as follows:
Components of your grade Weight
Project Report ( I assign them to you individually) 5 %
Three Mid-Term Exams (Best 2 out of 3) 65 % (32.5 % each)
Final Comprehensive Exam: 2hours : required for all 30 %
Total 100 %
Grade % to be earned to make the grade
A Greater than or equal to 90
B 80 to 89.99
C 70-79.99
D 60-69.99
F Less than 60
NOTE : In Borderline situations at the end of the semester , the instructor reserves the right to
improve select students grades . This decision is based on a variety of factors taken into account by the
instructor – such as – great attendance record ( we know who is coming and not coming to class ),
attitude and behavior and commitment to course , class participation , continued improvement from
test one onwards in class, improvements shown in the grade made in the comprehensive final exam etc
etc.
Project Report
In your Class Notes Package you will see information containing annual data on interest rates, inflation rates, and
percentage change in exchange rates for 32 countries (including the US) for the period: 1988 - 2000. Each one of
you will be assigned one foreign country and a five-year period. I will assign the country and time period
for you . Based on calculations using the data for the assigned country and the US, you will need to answer
several questions: all answers must be TYPED; all data entry into the table that goes with the project must be
TYPED ; hand written projects : YOU LOSE 50% of the grade automatically. I WILL GIVE YOU A HANDOUT
EXPLAINING WHAT YOU NEED TO DO; A completed copy of what is expected of you with data and solution
can be found in Blackboard site for this course .
5
Courses and get to FINA 4500.
( these questions are also repeated in the Project Section of class notes : SEE PAGES 242-244,in YOUR
CLASS NOTES FOR PROJECT DATA ; I WILL ASSIGN THE COUNTRY AND TIME PERIOD FOR
EACH OF YOU. EACH OF YOU GETS A DIFFERENT COUNTRY AND TIME PERIOD. U WILL
NOT BE ABLE TO COPY OR CHEAT ON THIS PROJECT. DO YOUR OWN WORK OR GET A
ZERO ON PROJECT. I will give a hand out which shows how to do the project for a hypothetical country
assignment; what are the questions you are being asked to do and a blank form you can use to type up your
answers . DO NOT USE EXCEL to compute Geometric mean.
You can only answer these questions correctly after you have properly understood the material presented in
chapters 6 and 7. When we get to that section, I will discuss the necessary analytical methods in greater detail.
The report is due in class : It has to be in hard copy format ; It can not e mailed to me . It has to be hand
delivered to me or my TA in the class room and your signature has to be on our Proof of Project delivery
sheet . Unless we have it done this way , you will get no credit for the project. The project can be hand
delivered on 11/28 or 11/30 : either date is OK . . It cannot be given prior to this date; Anyone who does
not have their signature in our proof of submission sheet , will get a zero for the project .
Late submission will cost you 50 points off your grades on this report. Note: each of you will have a unique
country/year combination : so do not waste your time copying someone else’s report :you will
automatically get a zero and an F in the course. This is a straight forward project and not worth copying
from any one. IF YOU TURN IN A HAND WRITTEN REPORT (AS OPPOSED TO A TYPED REPORT)
YOU AUTOMATICALLY LOSE 50 POINTS . I will assign individual project and give you a handout
with your name and project listing ; Check Blackboard for project assignments also
______________________________________________________________________________
Mid-Term and Final Exams There will be three mid-terms and a comprehensive final exams. Out of the three exams, the one with the
lowest score will be dropped. You will receive a zero for any missed exam. No makeup exams will be given.
Therefore, you can only miss one exam without adversely affecting your total score. Please consult the Studying
Assignment section for examination dates. Final cannot be dropped – it is required of all students and it is
comprehensive final exam. If you missed two mid terms, then here is the deal:
the one mid term u took is worth 32.5% , you get a zero on the second missed mid term ,final is worth 30%,
Project is worth 5% weight. They add up to 67.5%. The highest grade u can make in this class under those
circumstances is a D . I WOULD NOT recommend this strategy to anyone.
VARIOUS CLASSROOM POLICIES :
1)During the exam, you can only use the formula sheet(s) provided to you. In your Class Notes Package you
will see a complete List of All Formula sheets for the entire course. I will copy and give you those pages
containing the relevant formula sheets for each of the exams. You are required to be familiar with them prior to
the exam. Neither me, nor my TA, will discuss or explain how to use these formulas during the exam. You are
expected to memorize any material not included in the formula sheet. See pages 234-239 in my class notes to see
formulas listed chapter by chapter – this is what you get during the mid term and final exam.
2) We use Black board to post GRADES and send out communications; Also select information on
individual mid term exams and final exam plus select handouts may be posted in blackboard .
3)ONCE EXAM STARTS : YOU CAN LEAVE ONLY AFTER TURNING IN THE EXAM. NO
RESTROOM BREAKS ALLOWED ONCE EXAM STARTS.ONCE EXAM BEGINS, AFTER THE
6
FIRST FIFTEEN MINUTES YOU CAN NOT COME AND TAKE THE EXAM. NO HATS TO BE
WORN DURING EXAM. ;NO CELL PHONES/IPODS ETC TO BE ALLOWED ON EXAM DAYS.
3A) I am ANTI USE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN CLASS:
THIS APPLIES TO ALL SUCH ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT; NO LAP TOPS EVER ALLOWED IN
MY CLASS. No IPADS, NO LAP TOPS ever in my class; LEAVE ALL THIS INSIDE YOUR school bag ;
NO TEXTING CAN BE DONE ONCE CLASS STARTS OR DURING EXAM TIME.
TURN ALL THESE EQUIPMENT OFF ONCE CLASS IS IN SESSION. I can also observe you if you text
under the table – and my TA will note the names of all such students ; You will pay a price for it at the end
of the semester in terms of grades ; You CAN NOT use the Cell phone as a calculator in my class.
4)NO LAPTOPS ALLOWED IN CLASS; please turn off all electronic devices once class starts. I will make
no exceptions; The whole point is : NO ELECTRONIC DEVICE OF ANY KIND ( except a simple
calculator ) allowed during the whole course . If you cannot live without these gadgets – I strongly urge you
to switch to another section taught by another instructor. I will help you with the add drop to get into
another class .
5) RESCHEDULING FINAL EXAMS :
Students who have more than two final examinations scheduled on one day may request to reschedule one of the
examinations on another day during the final examination period as follows: Students may request to reschedule their final exam with their respective faculty member. This request
must be made in writing to the instructor of record for the course in which the examination is scheduled.
This request must be made by the last regularly scheduled class meeting before pre-finals days.
The request should identify the course name as well as the date and time each final is scheduled; and offer
a time when the student is available to take the exam. Instructors of record may, but are not required to,
reschedule an examination on the date requested by the student.
6) Behave like a grown up in class. Do not come late and leave early from class as a habit. Ask questions if in
doubt, but DO NOT have any side conversations and personal talks while I am lecturing. I do NOT tolerate such
child like behavior. Here is the deal for any one acting in such child like behavior: Say your weighted average
grade is 79.9999 ; U get a C in the course for such a behavior. We are here to Learn, and graduate and move on
with our lives. I am here to do my best job to help u learn the material.
7) PICK UP YOUR GRADED EXAMS back from me : Here is the deal guys : I will bring the graded exam
to class for two classes ; if you did not pick up your exam at this period – you wait till
DEADWEEK ( week before finals) –and look over the uncollected exams to find yours and take it at that
time.
8) The class we meet before the test date : THIS IS MEANT FOR REVIEW and any final discussions; IT
IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to come prepared for this review class with doubts and questions from all
the topics that have been covered. If you have no questions to ask or no doubts to clear - I will assume that
you have no doubts and I will proceed to the next topic . So come PREPARED with questions for review;
9) E mail me only at [email protected] ; this is the one I read and respond to;
10) You cannot record my lectures without written Permission from me .
7
11 ) Blackboard : I have put some useful material for the class here : also I post your grades here ; Make use of it
.
12) FORM A STUDY TEAM NOW : You may be missing class ( due to many reasons) and u may be missing
some handouts, you may be missing out on important info about the exam or project due to all this. Keep a
contact list of fellow students who are in class regularly to get what you missed . Your study team should MEET
ONCE A WEEK to review , go over class material, assignments, old exams and to help you understand this
complicated material – so that you can do good enough to pass this course in your first attempt .
OTHER UNT POLICIES
Academic Integrity Standards and Sanctions for Violation. According to UNT Policy 18.1.16,
Student Academic Integrity, academic dishonesty occurs when students engage in behaviors
including, but not limited to cheating, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty, forgery,
plagiarism, and sabotage. A finding of academic dishonesty may result in a range of academic
penalties or sanctions ranging from admonition to expulsion from the University. [Insert specific
sanction or academic penalty for specific academic integrity violation].
ADA Statement. UNT makes reasonable academic accommodation for students with disabilities. Students seeking accommodation must first register with the Office of Disability Accommodation (ODA) to verify their eligibility. If a disability is verified, the ODA will provide a student with an accommodation letter to be delivered to faculty to begin a private discussion regarding one’s specific course needs. Students may request accommodations at any time, however, ODA notices of accommodation should be provided as early as possible in the semester to avoid any delay in implementation. Note that students must obtain a new letter of accommodation for every semester and must meet with each faculty member prior to implementation in each class. For additional information see the ODA website at disability.unt.edu
Emergency Notification & Procedures. UNT uses a system called Eagle Alert to quickly notify students with critical information in the event of an emergency (i.e., severe weather, campus closing, and health and public safety emergencies like chemical spills, fires, or violence). In the event of a university closure, please refer to Blackboard for contingency plans for covering course materials.
Acceptable Student Behavior. Student behavior that interferes with an instructor’s ability to conduct a class or other students' opportunity to learn is unacceptable and disruptive and will not be tolerated in any instructional forum at UNT. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior will be directed to leave the classroom and the instructor may refer the student to the Dean of Students to consider whether the student's conduct violated the Code of Student Conduct. The University's expectations for student conduct apply to all instructional forums, including University and electronic classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The Code of Student Conduct can be found at deanofstudents.unt.edu/conduct.
Student Perceptions of Teaching. Student feedback is important and an essential part of participation in this course. The student evaluation of instruction is a requirement for all organized classes at UNT. The survey will be made available during weeks 13 and 14 of the long semesters to provide students with an opportunity to evaluate how this course is taught. Students will receive an email from "UNT SPOT Course Evaluations via IASystem Notification" ([email protected]) with the survey link. Students should look for the email in their UNT email inbox. Simply click on the link
8
and complete the survey. Once students complete the survey they will receive a confirmation email that the survey has been submitted. For additional information, please visit the spot website at www.spot.unt.edu or email [email protected].

Homework Problems/questions The Study Assignment section lists selected questions from each chapter. You are not required to turn them in
for credit. However, working out these problems may help you get a better understanding of the chapter
objectives.. Textbook homework assignments ARE FOR YOU TO WORK . THESE WILL NOT BE
COLLECTED BY ME. Doing these may help you understand the material better. I will not necessarily use any
of these questions in making up the tests for this class. FREE LAB in the BLB – room 006 at the Ground level
has graduate assistants to help you with the questions or problems. I expect you to do the assigned work to master
the chapter objectives.
._____________________________________________________________________________
Attendance Although, I will not take attendance, it is very important that you attend each class. You will be able to relate to
the material much better if you come prepared to the class by reading the chapter and attempting to work out the
chapter-end problems. WE WILL PASS OUT A SEATING CHART AND PLEASE SIT IN THAT SPOT FOR
THE WHOLE SEMESTER. EXAMS WILL BE SORTED BY SEAT NUMBER.
Based on prior experience : those of you who miss several classes, come in late/leave early on a regular basis will
end up REPEATING THE COURSE many times just to get a “C”.
______________________________________________________________________________
