Without filtering or digests, inbox is noisy with channel posts
So we have to filter out messages fromThe Channel and Label them
Start with a single Channel message
This one is from “Commons”,and “Renewable Energy”
Filter this message Select “More actions” and then“Filter messages like these”
Gmail will make a guess on how to filter this message
Along with the post you selected, all the other posts to the same Channel Forum will be shown
Change filter to grab all BGI-Channel posts
However, for our first filter, we want all Channel posts to be grouped together. Change to
“list:(.bgichannel.org)” and click Test to see result
Create a master filter for all channel posts
Select “Skip the Inbox”,“Apply Label” and “New Label...”
Create a new label #BGI-Channel
Create New Label “#BGI-Channel”and “OK”
Create a new label #BGI-Channel
Click on “Also apply filter to conversations below”,
and finally “Create Filter”
Your filter and label are now created
The #BGI-Channel label has all your posts, not your inbox
Your Inbox is cleared of Channel posts, and your #BGI-Channel label has them instead.
Now we will create individual forum labels
Go back to your single Channel message
Note the name the forum that it came from. This one is from Commons, and Renewable Energy
Filter this message Select “More actions” and then“Filter messages like these”
View test resultsYou’ll see all posts to this same Channel
Forum will be filtered together.Click on “Next Step”.
Create a new label Select “Skip the Inbox”,“Apply Label” and “New Label...”
Create a new label #BGI-Channel/Commons
Create New Label “#BGI-Channel/Commons”and “OK”
Create a new label Select “Skip the Inbox”,“Apply Label” and “New Label...”
Create a second labelCreate Second Label
“#BGI-Channel/Commons/Renewable-Energy”and “OK”
Create a filter for both labels
Click on “Also apply filter to conversations below”,
and finally “Create Filter”
Your second filter is now created
Now your channel posts areorganized in a nested labels
Another useful filter option is to “Star it”
You can “star” posts from Announcement forums, or classes you are currently taking. This will mark
them for more attention until Unstarred.
Gmail Best Practices
Other Topics:Labels are not FoldersArchive is not Trash, instead it is NOT label Inbox
Thus Archive button is = remove Inbox labelAll mail has every archived mail
Move button removes current label and adds new label. Label button is safer, adds label to existing labels
Special Labels !! ! @ #!!Highest and !High priority are sorted to top, use like “!Homework”@, useful for emails from a specif email account, will be sorted to top next#topic labels sorted above normal labels
Useful to “Hide least-used Labels” using Settings:LabelsTo hide completely read Labels, enable the Lab
