Film Studies at Liverpool offers you thechance to study with recognised scholars offilm cultures and industries around the world,offering a wide-ranging and sophisticatedacademic programme in this critical field.
Our students will come to us with a passionfor film and an eagerness to develop theirunderstanding of themedium and its influence,as well as to broaden the horizons of theirfilm culture. They have an interest in worldcultures and a desire to fully appreciate theways in which these cultures have expressedthemselves through film.We encourage ourstudents to become independent learners,and support them through our dedicated libraryresources, including awide variety of filmsfrom all periods and sources available forprivate study, e-learning initiatives andstructured tasks outside the classroom.
Film Studies is currently available as a Jointor Minor subject. Students who chooseto study Film Studies do so in combinationwith one of over 30 Humanities Subjects.
Film Studies is a cross-departmental subjectwith principal input being from the Departmentof Cultures, Languages and Area Studies,in the School of Histories, LanguagesandCultures, and the Department ofCommunication andMedia in the Schoolof the Arts. Youwill also have the opportunityto studymodules concernedwith filmmusicfrom the Department of Music.
STUDYABROADYouwill have the opportunity to study abroadas part of your degree.We have links withuniversities in Europe, the US, Canada, andin countries across Latin America, which allowyou to study abroad for a semester or a year,depending on your subject combinationand yourmajor study programme. Thecontext inwhich theyareproducedanddistributed isconstantlychangingbut their importanceasdocumentsofour timesremains, asdoes thepleasure theygive toaudiencesacross theworldand theirpotential influenceontheway thoseaudiencesmaysee theworld.
Past alumni have found employment ineducation, marketing, festival administration(for example at the London Jewish FilmFestival) and awide range of other fieldsincluding translation and business.
HONOURSSELECTFrom 2014, the Faculty of Humanities andSocial Sciences is offering a new, innovativeway to study.
We are offering amuchwider range of Joint(50:50) degrees across the Faculty. Film Studies at Liverpool combines the existingspecialisms of our contributing departmentsto offer a fully rounded specialist course forthe first time at the University of Liverpool.Our area specialisms include British, French,German, Italian, Hispanic and Latin Americancinemas, and independent American film aswell as Hollywood. Thematic interests includefilm documentary and realism, depictions ofthe city and of cultural exchange, and politicalaspects of cinema.

Studying Film at 25% enables you to selectthose aspects of the course which linkmostclosely to your Major study programme,or alternatively to develop your audiovisualliteracy and your sense of themediums placein the world.
