FILMING AT THE PUB – OVERVIEW• We started off the day at filming by meeting Ashley in the pub at around

6pm• We told him to wear black trousers, a white t-shirt/cotton top with a

leather jacket• The pub was still open when we started, so we had to work around the

other customers and workers who were carrying on around out• We arranged for the band members to meet us later that evening as we

were shooting the band once the pub had closed as we had to set up the instruments

• We used a variety of shots when filming Ashley including:- Tracking shots of Ashley walking - POV shots, - Match on action (with him opening the door)- Medium and long shots- Close up shots of him opening the door to the pub

FILMING AT THE PUB – ASHLEY INSIDE THE PUB

• Once inside the pub, we filmed shots of Ashley at the bar, sitting on the armchair texting and we used a variety of shots to increase the diversity in our video

• We particularly tried to use high angled shots to increase a sense of inferiority and feebleness of the male character

• We then moved Ashley to sit on a stool by the bar and we shot him buying a drink and taking a sip of a beer

• We wanted to try create the effect of Ashley drinking lots of beers to show a gradual process of him getting drunk

• We shot Ashley paying for one of the beers, and then we got empty glasses of beer (from around the pub) and filmed shots of Ashley with the beer glasses piling up

• We planned in the editing to cut these shots together to allow the audience to recognize he is getting drunk and drinking lots of beer

FILMING AT THE PUB – FILLER SHOTS• In between filming Ashley, Ella

and I filmed some filler shots, such as filming the pub workers behind the bar pouring drinks from the draught

• Another filler shot we filmed was of the candles on a table. We used extreme close up to film the candle flickering. We started by filming one almost full candle, then we found one which had been burning for a bit longer so was shorter with more wax. We shot around 5/6 different candles, each of which smaller than the one before. We thought this would be a good idea to show the passing of time.

FILMING AT THE PUB – ASHLEY’S ENTRANCE AND EXIT FROM THE PUB

• We went outside the front of the pub and shooting Ashley walking down the road towards the door of the pub, and then walking into the pub

• Once we had got enough footage of Ashley walking into the pub (to be used at the beginning of the music video), we prepared to film the shots of Ashley leaving the pub (to be used at the end of the music video)

• We told Ashley we wanted him to stumble out of the pub, to give off the impression that he was drunk

• We shot different angles of Ashley walking out e.g. lying on the floor to film his feet, standing next to the door and having Ashley stumble past the camera

• We then crossed over the road and shot Ashley walking out the door and stumbling down the road. These were some of the best shots we got of him exiting the pub as there were cars passing by, which we caught on the camera whilst filming Ashley walking out

• We were already planning to add an effect when it came to editing of the shot of Ashley walking out the pub to enhance the drunken effect

FILMING AT THE PUB – THE BAND• The pub closed at around 11pm, which meant it was going

to be a late night!• As soon as the pub was empty, we all started to move the

furniture to make a space for the band to be set up• Once the area was cleared (by that time all the band

members had arrived) we set up the drum set, the keyboard, microphones and put up the huge speakers

• We turned on the camera and put the band members into their positions to try and place them in the specific places to ensure they would all be able to be seen when we were shooting the whole band

• Once the band members were all in place, we experimented with the lighting, to try and place them so there was a focus on Barney (the main singer) but also so the other members of the band would be seen. Lighting was really important as the pub did not have very good lighting at all, which made it have quite a gloomy atmosphere.

FILMING AT THE PUB – THE BAND (PROBLEMS)• Once we started to actually film the shots of the band its

was gone 12 o’clock. Ella and I knew that we weren’t going to be able to film the band scenes to the best of our ability as we were keeping the pub open after hours and many of our band members had school and work the next day

• We started to play the song and not all the band members were cooperating properly, which was making me really aggravated as we just wanted to get the band shots done and then we could all go

• However, due to the stress and time-pressure we did not get a very wide variety of shots of the band

• We played the song out loud iPod speakers and once the band members were a bit more relaxed, we started to get some good shots

Page 9: Filming Location 2

FILMING AT THE PUB – THE BAND• We took individual shots of the band members. These

included:- A side-on shot of Barney singing into the microphone - A high-angled shot of Barney singing on his knees- Close-up shots of the band members playing their

instruments e.g. the drummer, keyboard player and the guitar players

• Our main shots were of the band as a whole• We shot the whole song through about 10 times, by this

point it was around 1:30/2:00 in the morning• Ella and I decided that we would have to work with what we

had shot and we started packing away all the equipment, moving the furniture back

• We then said a huge thank you to everyone who had taken part and of course the pub owner for staying open for us

Page 10: Filming Location 2

FILMING AT THE PUB – WHAT WOULD I HAVE DONE DIFFERENT?• I would have tried to find a pub where we could have filmed

at more appropriate time so we were not in a rush or under time pressure

• I would have been a bit more careful with the actors we chose to use as we had to find 2 band members on the day of filming because our two friends who were planned to be in the band pulled out the day before we had arranged to shoot

• I would have tried to get a wider variety of shots of the band to try and make it look a bit more professional and not so static

Other than these points, both Ella and I were really happy with the shots we got overall and we were looking forward to

starting to edit and bring our music video to life!
