What Do Film Editors Do? Film editors get to be on the front line of all media

productions.

They are the people who turn all of the raw footage shot on a movie set and turn it into an interesting film.

They are the ones that decide which shots, angles and performances to use, and then cut them together to form the story.

Editors also add music, visual effects, and sound effects

to their cut sequences to add even more depth to a scene.

First…

First the movie is filmed one scene at a time. Sometimes the scenes are not always filmed in the order of the story. It is the editor’s job after to put it all in the right order.

Take 36….

Sometimes filming a scene can take a long time for everyone to get it right.

Some movies, it may take several takes.

Sometimes they just want a variety of angles so that the editor will have a lot to choose from.

Next…. After the shooting is done, the Editor goes

through the footage, and selects scenes based on their contribution to the story.

They take the film and sound and transfer it on to a computer . They use programs like Final Cut express and Adobe Premier.

The editor is looking for the best combination of photography, performance, consistency and timing.

Then, scenes are trimmed, cut, and arranged to create a clear and understanding film

Then comes the sound.

After the film has been pieced together , they work with sound effect editors, and musical directors on the sound, and special effects that will be added to the film.

Then,they insert music, dialogue and sound effects, using editing equipment.

Perfection After they edit the film, the editor

makes even more corrections and prepares it for the directors to see.

Just like directors, film editors spend a lot of time perfecting their work.

Technology

A film editor is a very complex job. You need to know how to use computers and digital editing systems.

A working knowledge of photography and digital camera technology is also good to have.

The Job Careers in film editing can be found in

the movie and television industry. A film editor earns at least $1,400 a

week.

In a lot of cases, the editor is chosen even before all of the actors.

Some directors, like Martin Scorsese continue to use the same editor over and over again.

After winning an Oscar for her editing work on Raging Bull,  Thelma Schoonmaker has edited all of Martin Scorsese’s movies.
