Industry leaders, city officials and representatives of the major media

outlets gathered in downtown Los Angeles to mark the unveiling of FilmLA and the City and County of Los Angeles’ new marketing plan, “Film Works.”

Thegoalofthepublicrelationseffortistomakecityresidentsawareofallthebenefitsthatcomewithfilminglocally.“FilmWorks…keepjobsinLosAngeles”isastandoutplanthatcanmakeeveryoneawareofthenegativeimpactthatrunawayproductionshaveontheregionaleconomy.Atthesametimeitwillthankcommunitieswherefilmingtakesplacefortheirsupportandcooperation.

Thenewsconference,whichwasheldatLosAngelesCenterStudios,wasthemedtolooklikeanoldtimemovieshoot.Classicmovieproductionequipment,includingavintagemoviecameratruckownedbyLocal399memberKenReed,flankedthestage.ToaddtotheTo

addtotheambiance,acameraassistantperformedthefamiliarmovementsto‘slateatake’beforethespeakerstookthemicrophone,andaSteadicamoperatorweavedbetweentheattendeeswhilecapturingfootage.

Local399helpedorganizetheeventandwillmaintainastrongandsupportiveinvolvementwithFilmLA.BusinessAgentEdDuffycurrentlyservesastheFirstViceChairoftheFilmLABoardofDirectors,andwillassumethepositionofChairmanin2011.

“Ithasbeenalmost20yearssincerunawayproductionsbegantoaffectnotjustourindustry,butourcity,”explainedDuffyafterthepressconference.“Weneedtocontinuefightingtokeepproductionslocal,whichiswhatwearetryingtoaccomplishthroughthe“FilmWorks”campaign.It’sourgoaltomakethecitizensofLosAngelesandthisregionunderstandthatthebenefitsoffilmingintheirneighborhoodsaretremendous.Theeconomicbenefitsaremorethan

worthastreetclosureortemporarydisruptioninacommunity.Filmingbringsjobsandeconomicgrowthtotheentirearea.Thatiswhatwehopetoaccomplishwithournewplan,FilmWorks.”

Filming in the Sun: LA Wins ‘Law and Order’After a 20-year run in New York

City, the popular NBC television crime drama Law and Order has chosen Los Angeles as the setting for its newest series.

Currentlyshootingitsfirstseason,LawandOrder:LosAngeleshasbeenscheduledfor22episodes.ItisthefirsttimethatashowintheLawandOrderseries–whichincludestheoriginalandfourspinoffs–hasbeenfilmedoutsideNewYork.

CoordinatorRodBearden,a16-yearTeamstermember,reportedthathiscrewisenjoyingbeingpartofthenewseries.“TheshowistakinganinterestingnewdirectionnowthattheyareinLA,”explainedBearden.“Theyarereallyshowcasinghowbrightandbeautifulthiscityisyear-round.”

Thescopeoftheproduction–whichincludesanalternatingcastandaboutfourdaysperepisodeonlocation–meansalotofTeamstertrucksareinvolved.“Asfarasequipmentisconcerned,thisisoneofthebiggesttelevisionshowsinLAatthemoment,”saidBearden,whostartedhiscareerasadriverinDallas,Texas,andremainsadriveratheart.“Wehave16trailersjustforbasecamp;it’sreallyimpressive.”

ThelargeamountofequipmenttranslatesintoTeamsterjobs,andBeardenispleasedthatmembersarebenefitingfromtheshow’srelocationtoLosAngeles.“Forthisshowtocomehereisgreatbecauseit’salong-termproductionthatcreatesjobsintheLAarea.”Thedowntown

Longtime coordinator and Teamsters Local

399 member James C. Taylor passed away recently. He was 66 years old.

Stewartworkedinthemovieindustryforover40years,firstasadriverandthenasacoordinatorwithhiscompanyNAEStudioRentals.HislistoffilmsincludestheclassicsAmericanGraffiti,GetShorty,Mrs.DoubtfireandHoffa.

Throughouthislongcareer,however,healwaysmadetimeforhisfamily.Hewouldnotmisshischildren’sschoolorsportsevents,andoftentookthemcampinginhisRV.

“HewasagreatexampletoallofusbythewayhelovedourMomandledhiskidsanddriversthroughtheupsanddownsoflife,”saidhisson,Cliff.“Hisperfect

dayinvolvedtimewithfriendsandfamilyonthegolfcourse,campingorjustwatchinganoldWesternonTV.”

Itwasabout20yearsagowhenTaylordiscoveredgolf,andhebeganplayingasmuchaspossible.“Hebasically‘lived’golf,”explainedCliff,whoalsoworked

asacoordinator.“Heevenmovedsothathecouldlivenexttoacourse.”

Asacoordinatorhealwayscaredabouthisdrivers.“Helovedtoteachandhelpthemwheneverpossible,”addedNikiGrosso,hisassociateatNAE.“Hewastoughwhenthingsweren’tgoingwell,buthewasoneofthemostcaringpeopleinthebusiness.”

Heissurvivedbyhiswife,GailTaylor,daughterGabrielleShirley,sonsClifton,ClaytonandClintonTaylor,andthirteengrandchildren.

Remembering James C. Taylor
