From retweets,

shares, 'likes', clickthroughs,

to online petitions, and

charitable donations....

"Clicktivism" is the new Internet activism.Photo via Agent-x Comics

There has been continuous debate as to whether clicktivism can generate

real world change.Photo via benchilada

" For a lot of people, the mere act of posting relives that need or feeling for them to be involved. They feel like they did their part"

Heather LaMarre, Strategic Communication Professor at the University of Minnesota

While social media can inform, inspire, and organize broad numbers of people to an issue, is

clicktivism missing the "act" in activism?

KONY 2012's viral video landed more than 80 million views in its first week on Youtube

However, the second video barely exceeded 1.5 million views in its first week.

The online buzz translated into a poorly attended KONY 2012: Cover the Night

On Facebook: 21, 000 in Vancouver said "attending" 17 attended

5000 in NYC said "attending"14 attended

Is clicktivism simply a trend for the moment- to click "like" and "retweeting" something for a

relation to our peers?

Take the #TellVicEverything campaign when Minister of Public Safety, Vic Toews

introduced privacy infringing legislation...

Twitter exploded with tweets containing the hashtag #TellVicEverything to voice their

opposition.

Upon thousands of tweets directly to the Minister, the bill was subsequently tossed aside.

As such, this is an example among many that "clicktivism" works, but is it enough?

Clicktivism can be said to be effective in specific situations such as "Crowdsourcing"

Crowdsourcing is the utilization of the public to solve police investigations

"Clicktivism negates the human element of activism when we become obsessed with the

digital marketing measurements of click-throughs, retweets, and likes"

Most recently, social media served as a form of

communication and political awareness and organization

to the Arab Spring

In Egypt for example, while it was neither Facebook, Twitter, nor Youtube that brought down Hosni Mubarack, social media enabled

Egyptians to act in an informed and organized manner.

As such, what can be deduced of clicktivism?

On one hand, it is an effective tool for awareness and organization...

Page 16: Film slideshare

However, on the other hand, it can turn our sense of activism into a lazy means of

action through the easy click of a mouse.

What is of utmost importance is the need to be informed utilizing social media while

being able to act in the most efficient way to contribute.

Joining a local protest, sharing issues in-person, contributing your efforts to a

grassroots organization, can all revitalize the "act" in "activism".

A Georgetown University study found that 55% of digitally active American adults were likely to

do more than simply "like" a cause.

Engaging with causes via social media prompted them to donate money (68%), attend or participate in an event (43%) and volunteer

(53%)

However, we can also ask: if social media was private to whom "Liked" what, would people

still participate in clicktivism without their actions displayed to friends?

Page 21: Film slideshare

Furthermore, we can ask if clicktivism is truly more about

demonstrating our empathetic sides to

our internet audience than dedication to a

cause.

Page 22: Film slideshare

If clicktivism contains this

desire to flaunt to our friends, we can spin influence by

utilizing our "clicktivist power",

to encourage action among our

friends and families.

Let us truly display the "act" in activism to demonstrate we are not merely a generation

of uninspired clicktivists.
