Film Posters

The purpose of a film poster is to promote a film by attracting the target audience and maybe those who wouldn’t necessarily go to see the film.

Conventions

The conventions of film posters are the names of the main actor/actresses, the producer/directors name, production logos or other films that they are known for, a main image that is associated with the film, occasionally a release date and the name of the film itself and a slogan or catchphrase that is used to entice the audience.

What is on them?Film posters “sell” films on the basis of the actor/actress, the producer/director, the tagline to add excitement, the studio that produced it and if it has any special features – such as being shown in 3D. These are all dependent, however, on how successful they are – if the producer isn’t well known then they wouldn’t use their name as it may put off the target audience.

Where do you find them?We normally find posters in busy public places so as to get as much attention as possible i.e. bus stops, on the sides of busses, in magazine/newspapers, billboards and inside shops that sell films – such as HMV. The posters on billboards tend to be different to the ones on the sides of bus stops because they tend to be next to roads – less information is usually shown – or is shown in a different way so as to show off specific aspects.
