RBJ Trust is a private family trust that saw a gap in the Namibian market. While the Namibian film industry was developing and slowly becoming internationally recognised, many of the film companies which came here to film, did not know about the skills, equipment and varied locations that Namibia offered. As publishing is our passion, once we identified the gap in the market, the Film Production Directory Namibia was created.

This is our third edition of the Film Production Directory - the filmmakers’ guide to filming in Namibia - and we are proud to still be going strong with an increasing base of support both locally and internationally.

Visit our website - www.filmdirectorynamibia.com - for a list of experienced Namibian crew and more!

This DirectoryThis directory is produced to market and support the growing film industry in Namibia at an International level. Many companies that film in Namibia bring their own crew, equipment and caterers, unaware that Namibia is fully capable of providing these facilities at the same standard for less cost.

The Film Production Directory Namibia is intended to be a handbook to any filmmaker entering the country. It gives an overall picture of what is available and necessary for the making of a successful film. Therefore we have covered such topics as crew, accommodation, equipment rental, production service companies, photographers, casting agencies, animal wranglers, couriers and freights, banking services, catering companies, airlines and airports and contact details for the relevant embassies.

Our directories are distributed to some of the largest international meeting points in the film industry. Our distribution includes countries which provide Namibia’s largest film clientele – USA (AFCI Location Trade Show), UK (The Production Show), Germany (Berlinale), India (Mumbai Film Festival) and a variety of other European & International countries (Cannes Film Festival & Cannes Lions).

We Speak Filmmaking

Namibia has become the preferred filming location for various genres, especially wildlife documentaries, survival programs, tourism filming and more and more frequently, feature films. At the time of print, there are at least five productions currently being filmed in this country whilst another two have just wrapped. As in any country, the norm is that when a film company comes into Namibia they contact the local film commission and use the services and expertise of a local production company. This handbook facilitates that process. We ensure that filmmakers use the film directory as their guide for information on the services and products offered in the surrounding area.

We are fortunate that the Namibia Film Commission supports us and uses the directory as their marketing material at the international events they attend. The Namibia Tourism Board also assists with distribution. With the assistance of the NFC and the NTB as well as our own international distribution to the major film festivals, we market filming in Namibia to a wide, attentive audience. In fact, due to the directory, we have helped bring international filming business to Namibia.

Namibia Facts

Namibia is an immense, still, desert country lying under a hot sun; and yet it is a potpourri of turbulent history, multi-cultured people, sweeping landscapes and dramatic events. It spans approximately 824,000 km2 which, even by African standards, is vast. The rugged beauty and the determined life force of nature, make Namibia unique. Fauna and flora have adapted to the harsh climate of the Namib Desert while the coastal mist breathes life into the dunes. The sheer abundance and variety of wildlife found in an apparently barren country, is incredible. From big game such as lions, elephants, giraffes and rhino to the small palmato gecko, black widow spider and the sand dune burrowing skinks, Namibia has a surprising and fascinating selection of creatures and fauna.

Since the shaping of its modern borders, Namibia has been administered by the German, British and Afrikaans forces and now, after Independence, by Namibians. There are 28 cultural languages in Namibia, all classed as ‘living’ languages! This is yet another example of the diversity found in this amazing country.

Health Precautions

Due to the hot, dry climate Namibia is virtually free of tropical diseases; therefore health certificates are not generally

required. Malaria exists in the northern area throughout the year - the risk of malaria can be reduced by the

use of tablets, which should be started before arriving in Namibia and under your doctor’s guidance. Southern Africa has some of the highest skin cancer statistics – please therefore

apply sun block liberally prior to sun exposure.

Health Care

Namibia’s health care services are excellent in the larger cities. There are many well-equipped private hospitals as well as government/public hospitals and clinics open 24 hours daily. All medical doctors speak English and nurses are well trained. Prescribed medicine is available from pharmacies. It is advisable to bring a copy of your prescription if you need to acquire specified medicine whilst in Namibia.

SafetyNamibia is a peaceful, democratic country and is relatively crime free. However, as in any other place in the world, there are undesirable elements.

Namibia Facts A LITTLE HISTORY

Namibia lay mostly uninhabited until the 15th century when Ovambo tribes from Central Africa finally reached and settled in this area, whilst other tribes from the South (The Nama tribes) were pushed up because of the settling of the Dutch and the English in the Cape. However, the history of our land can be found carved into rock paintings from as far back as 26,000 B.C. as a long line of scattered and small groups from the nomadic San Bushmen, Bantu herdsmen and the Himba tribes lived in what is now Namibia.

As far as the colonialists went, Namibia was seen as an unattractive acquisition. Conditions were harsh and resources few. With one of the world’s most inhospitable coastlines, barren landscapes and a severe lack of water, it was not until the middle of the 19th century that explorers began to venture into the heart of Namibia’s interior. Namibia was therefore overlooked by colonial powers, despite missionaries trying to convince Germany to lay claim to the country for many years. Germany finally colonised Namibia in 1884 and named the country South West Africa (Sudwestafrika).

This period of colonization was a time of conflict and rebellion by the pre-colonial Namibian population until Germany surrendered to the South African expeditionary army at the end of WWI. Namibia was given to British South Africa as a mandated territory to lead to independence. In effect though, Namibia was simply given to another colonial country, trading one colonial experience for another.

In 1966 SWAPO (South West Africa People‘s Organisation) began the bloody battle for independence and liberation from colonial rule for what was then known as South West Africa. However, it was only in 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its apartheid administration, after an intensive and prolonged struggle. On the 21 March 1990, after its first democratic elections, Namibia was declared an independent state. The small port of Walvis Bay however, remained under British South African rule for some years thereafter.

Throughout these successive administrations, the German influence remained strong in Namibia and to this day plays a major role in Namibia’s tourism appeal. Politically, Namibia’s history, with its successive administrations, remains a sensitive subject but Namibia boasts a proud record of uninterrupted peace after its first democratic elections and is a stable country which attracts a high rate of tourism and investment.

Namibia Facts GEOGRAPHY

© Namib Film / Karl Andre Terblanche Photography

Part of the allure of filming in Namibia is that it is four countries in one; four different landscapes, each with its own characteristics and attractions. Being a vast land with many geographical areas, a description of Namibia would also include ‘ghost towns’, Germanic architecture, varying climates, abandoned mines and farms, endless miles of deserted coastline, rich bird and animal life, and a tapestry of people….

Of these four distinctive regions, the most diverse is the Namib Desert from which our country derives its name. The Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world; some experts claim it is the very oldest as it was already arid 80 million years ago. It covers about 15% of Namibia with migrating seas of dune, dry riverbeds, gravel plains and great canyons such as the Fish River Canyon.

The second topographical region is that of the central plateau which runs from North to South with landscapes alternating between rocky outcrops, mountain ranges and sand filled valleys. This region is home to the majority of Namibia’s towns and villages.

The plateau gradually falls away into the third topographical region towards the east where the ancient red sand and sparse vegetation of the Kalahari Desert emerges from a sandy strip of land. The fourth and final topographical region is located in the north, and includes the wide, barren plains around the saline Etosha Pan as well as the endless grassy and densely wooded savannah areas of the Kavango and the Caprivi regions, to the east. This area receives generous amounts of rainfall resulting in tropical forests and perennial rivers.

A quick glance at the map of Namibia will show that our country is blessed for many reasons, not least of them that the many different regions are unique and beautiful in their own way. In the south of the country, Sossusvlei and the Fish River Canyon, are found; in the north, Etosha and the Kaokoveld and the east and west are filled with vast plains and grasslands holding many natural wonders.

The Erongo region, named after the Erongo mountain range, is one of the most established regions in Namibia, a fusion of progress and tradition. This region comprises of diverse landscapes such as the thorn-bush savanna, gravel plains and the Atlantic coastline. The country’s northern and southern regions are separated by the natural barriers of the Khomas Highlands and the Kuiseb River Valley.

The coastal town of Swakopmund, a favorite tourism destination and thriving town, is the capital of this region while some of the prominent features include the Spitzkoppe Mountains and the Brandberg Massive; both filled with pre-historic rock art and semi-precious gemstones, a result of eons of history.

Namibia Facts Hardap

The Hardap region is home to Namibia’s largest and oldest man-made fresh water dam on the Fish River, the Hardap Dam, which is surrounded by a small nature reserve. The dam provides water to various towns in the neighbouring dry desert-dominated area, including Mariental, the capital of this

region. The Hardap Region is renowned for the hidden canyon at Sesriem as well as the ancient red sand dunes at Sossusvlei while the beautiful Naukluft and Zaris Mountains are one of Namibia’s most scenically diverse regions to travel through.

Page 27: Film Production Directory Namibia 2012

The arid Karas region of Namibia receives fewer visitors than the northern parts of the country although the region has an empty beauty and many hidden treasures such as the world’s second largest canyon, the Fish River Canyon, the Kokerboom (quiver tree)

forest, the Brukaros Mountain (from where the name of the region is derived), the historical and scenic coastal town of Luderitz as well the ghost town of Kolmanskop, a former mining town active during the first diamond rush in Southern Africa.

Namibia Facts Khomas

Namibia’s capital, Windhoek, is found in the Khomas region of Namibia. As a result of this, the Khomas Region has the highest population of all of Namibia’s 13 regions, despite being one of the smallest. The region is named after the Khomas

Highlands that dominate the geological structure of this area – rolling hills and high, barren mountain ranges with hardly any level stretch of land between. The high altitudes of the mountainous terrain make the region one of the coldest during winter.

The Caprivi, considered the wettest region in Namibia, is a narrow strip of land connecting Namibia to Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. This small arm of Namibia is a mosaic of wetlands, forests, swamps and rivers. The water rich landscape has almost

200 different kinds of flora and 450 wildlife species that compliment the area with huge game reserves allowing herds of animals such as elephant, to move freely across borders. Katima Mulilo is the capital of Caprivi and is located on the Zambezi River.

The Kunene Region, also known as the Kaokoveld, is home to the unique Himba tribe, a nomadic, minority group in Namibia, who are noted for their ability to survive in an arid and merciless environment. The Kunene region is remarkably unchanged from

what one imagines it was many centuries ago and it is one of the most remote and undeveloped regions of Southern Africa, let alone Namibia. The Kunene is one of the last truly wild, natural regions of Africa, with wildlife including desert elephants.

A large number of Namibia’s population live in the Owambo regions of Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshana and Oshikoto, often informally referred to as the ‘Four O’ region and previously known as Owamboland. The essentially flat landscape of these regions is characterized by huge

spreading Marula trees and the tall Makalani palm while the floods (known as efundja) that feed the rivers and oshonas originate in the Angolan highlands and bring agricultural life to the land. Most of the inhabitants in this area are subsistence farmers as the region consists mainly of communal farming land.

Page 37: Film Production Directory Namibia 2012

Namibia Facts Okavango

The Kavango Region experiences higher rainfall than other parts of Namibia, resulting in a culture of agriculture and growth. The vast majority of the population lives in the northern-most

strip, along the Okavango River, characterising the region with a notably uneven population distribution. Rundu is the commercial capital of this region.

Namibia Facts Omaheke

Omaheke is the Herero word for sandveld (sand terrain) but the area is in fact, teeming with wildlife that roams freely across the land. The Omaheke region was transformed into Namibia’s

most important gateway for travelers and freight, with the building of the Trans-Kalahari Highway that stretches from Namibia to Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Otjozondjupa, often referred to as Bushmanland, located at the edge of the Kalahari Desert, is characterized by flat land and scrub desert vegetation. One of the most visited destinations

in Namibia, the Waterberg Plateau Park, is found in this region. The Hoansi San were among the original inhabitants of Southern Africa and Otjozondjupa is part of their traditional homeland.

Just as the geography in Namibia varies from region to region and place to place from arid, to semi-arid to subtropical, so does the climate. With 300 days of sunshine on average per year, Namibia is truly a sunny country. Namibia‘s climate is characterised by hot days and cool nights, typical of semi-desert terrain. The weather at the coast of Namibia, however, is generally cool and the days are often foggy. This cool and overcast weather is a product of the cold off-shore Benguela Current and the very hot Namib Desert. Winter however, sometimes brings the east wind and its searing heat to the coastal areas, often accompanied by a dust storm.

Summer is from October to April. Temperatures can reach 40º C which plummet at night to cool levels. Average daily temperatures range from 20 to 34º C. Winter is from May to September with wonderful warm days which are contrasted by very cold nights, when temperatures often drop to below freezing. It is only during the summer months from November to February that rain does occur, mostly as heavy thunderstorms. Then the usually dry riverbeds become saturated with torrents of muddy water in a very short time. It is during this time that the sun-scorched land comes to life and develops a colourful horizon to horizon floral carpet within a few days.

Namibia continues to shine as the location of choice for the international film market, and it is of no surprise that many filmmakers continue to return to Namibia again and again. Namibia offers idyllic tropical and desert locations that are incomparable. Our landscapes are one of Mother Nature’s best gifts.

Below are a few simple descriptions of what is on offer:

• sheer mountains and rocky outcrops • sandy beaches with golden or volcanic colored sand• endless belts of dunes and deserts• bounteous wild-life, bird-life and fishing options• long and winding roads through changing landscapes• sun drenched savannah with freely roaming wild-life• forests of trees – from “petrified” to “tropical”• scenic lakes, rivers and oases

From the quaint small German town of Swakopmund to the rustic traditional villages in the north, you will find no shortage of inspiration. Namibia’s varied populace has caused each town to develop its own character that is both unique and Namibian. Each town is able to double as a dozen different venues and time periods in film, from medieval Europe to modern America – allowing big savings for the producer.

Namibia is unique in many different ways, but one of the main reasons for its individual identity is that it has been influenced by different cultures during colonisation. Namibia is a blend of 11 major ethnic groups, each aware of the past but all celebrating the future that lies ahead. From the shadows of apartheid it has emerged as a collage of its diversity. This blend of cultures and people can be found in language, arts, music, sport, religion and even dress code. Namibians are proud to be Namibian.

Namibian crews are renowned for their skill and diversity. Knowledge of the local environment, local contacts, and understanding of the prevailing conditions are essential to a successful production in Namibia. Although it is possible to bring international crew to Namibia, we encourage the use of Namibian crew where possible. From experience, we know that local knowledge is priceless and adds great savings to the foreign producer’s budget.

Local casting agencies can supply any kind of look for your production. Namibian extras and actors are skilled in languages as well as stagecraft, and visiting directors praise their enthusiasm and professionalism.

Namibia has a long list of costume designers who create exclusively for the films, commercials and photographic industries. Costumes can be designed to cover many styles and eras with particular attention paid to contemporary and high fashion, period and vintage, colonial African, Indian, uniforms and more. Our designers take their inspiration from the landscape and history of Namibia and sew it into every stitch.

Namibian designers and craftsmen have carried out production design on many internationally acclaimed films and their skills range from designing, carpentry, patenting, woodworking and upholstery. We also have a great resource of props from historical furniture, firearms and other weapons to vintage vehicles.

Namibia has been on the international map of top filming destinations for a number of years and with more than a century of filmmaking experience, from the earliest days of cinematography in 1963 (Coasts of Skeletons : Robert Lynn) up to the latest and most technically sophisticated productions of today. Many films have been produced in Namibia by Namibians as well as international film companies. This has given Namibian crews the opportunity to learn from a wide range of cinematographers, directors and producers.

Namibia’s skills are up to date. In addition to the many international productions that shoot here each year, the local film industry regularly produces films.

Capturing The Essence Of Your Production

Page 65: Film Production Directory Namibia 2012

This chapter will answer any basic questions you have about shooting in Namibia. Should you be using a local production company to facilitate your filming in Namibia, then you are in good hands. A certain amount of paperwork is inevitable whenever you shoot, especially when you are in a foreign country but thanks to Namibia’s popularity as a filming destination, the local production companies have developed extensive know-how on how to meet their international client’s needs from legal requirements, forms, permits and stamps.

The following pages will give you an idea of what to expect and give you some practical information at your fingertips.

Useful Information

Page 66: Film Production Directory Namibia 2012

Shot in NamibiaUseful Information TRANSPORT & PORTSNamibia has two international airports, the Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek and Walvis Bay Airport. There are also 133 domestic airports and airstrips. Air Namibia, Namibia’s national carrier, maintains direct international flights to Frankurt, Germany six times a week as well as direct flights to London. Daily flights are also offered to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Angola, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

International freight services are available to and from Namibia. Namibia has two harbours, Walvis Bay and Luderitz, which are administered by Namibia Ports Authority (Namport).

The country has 42 000km of well established roads. The Trans-Caprivi and Trans-Kalahari arterial roads provide a fast and comfortable road link between Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe to name a few.

Once in Namibia the best way to get around is by car. There is a wide selection of car rental companies to choose from such as Africa 4x4 Rentals, Cars and Guides, Desert Car Hire, Drive Namibia and Sossusvlei Lodge Car Hire.

Page 67: Film Production Directory Namibia 2012

Many visitors are confused by our intersections, many of which are four-way stops. A four-way stop sign means traffic from all four directions must stop. The first vehicle to reach the intersection should move across first. If two vehicles reach the intersection at the same time, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

• Always ensure your vehicle is roadworthy before driving.

• Remember: your driving license must be with you when driving the vehicle – this is a legal requirement in Namibia.

• Carry extra drinking water and first aid kits if travelling long distances - especially in remote areas and a good map is essential.

• Ensure someone knows you are travelling and roughly when you should arrive. If you intend to travel off road, then we recommend driving with two vehicles.

• It is illegal to talk on your mobile phone when driving your vehicle. Pull your vehicle off the road to a safe area before answering your mobile phone.

• Wild animals are always a danger, especially at night and sunrise/sunset, so keep a look out and reduce speed when the road verge is grassy.

• Avoid driving in the country at night - animals are always a risk.

Useful Information TRANSPORT TIPSSeat BeltsBy law, seatbelts must be worn in the front and back of the car. If anyone is caught driving without their seatbelt fastened, the driver will be fined. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure all passengers wear seatbelts or appropriate child restraints. In an accident, seat belts save lives.

Road BlocksWhen entering or exiting from most centres you may come across traffic road blocks where in general the police check for roadworthiness of vehicles and licences. Do not be alarmed but co-operate with the police at these road blocks.

Even when the weather is misty and overcast, the sun can cause severe sunburn. The Namibian sun, even during winter from (May to July) is harsh. The greatest risk of serious sun-burn is on/near water e.g. when swimming.

A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses, are necessary requirements if you want to enjoy your trip. Aside from

the long term risks of skin cancer, a bad sunburn could spoil your holiday.

You can get sunburnt even on a wet, cold day especially if you are on a beach or the dunes.

Always use sunscreen and wear a cap/hat.
