Film opening plan

The narrative of the opening sequence is used to create an enigma. Therefore the audience will be intrigued and want to continue to watch the film. Our idea is of a man who is obsessed with this woman and wants to kill her. This man who is the villain (Propps theory of narrative) has to kill this woman as he has in every life she has been born into.

8POV ShotThe killer passing the woman from his point of view.

An enigma will be created within the first few shots as the picture the killer holds up will be from years ago. For example the picture will denote the woman but from 60 years ago. This will intrigue the audience as there is no possible way for these woman to be from the same lifetime. This will keep the audience engaged as they would want to know more. The will cause the demographic to have a polysemic view of the opening sequence.

This opening sequence will conform to the conventions of a thriller film as it has a hegemonic (Gramsci) view. The villain (Propps theory of narrative) will be the male character and the victim (Propps theory of narrative) will be the female character. This conforms to the hegemonic view of women as being inferior and men as superior.

The iconography of the opening sequence will be represented through the lighting, sound, location, costumes, and colours. The opening sequence will denote the use of both high and low key lighting. Within the first few shots they will be taken outside during the day. This denote the use of high key lighting. However when the flashback is denoted we will use low key lighting to create suspense. The sound used will either be diegetic or non-diegetic, we will not use both. The diegetic sound will be the sound of the characters movements, so the audience will hear what the character are doing eg walking hear their footsteps. We will not have any of the characters talking in the opening sequence. The non- diegetic sound, if used, will be a soundtrack. However this will only be used if we can find an un-copyrighted piece of music that is parallel and synchronous to the opening sequence. The location we will use is inside a house and on a street. The street will be used to denote the killer and villain crossing the road. In the house we will use a room with a table and that will be the focus of the shot. This will be used for the flashback. The female characters costumes will vary to denote that she is the same person but from a different lifetime. In the picture that the killer holds up of the woman from a previous life the female character will be wearing a dress and have curly hair. Therefore she will look like she is from a different time period. When the woman is crossing the road she will be in professional clothing (shirt, suit). This is so the audience know that they are 2 different people but will have identical facial features. The killer himself will be wearing a suit. This is to connote to the audience that he is methodical. The colours that we will use will be dark eg black, dark green, navy. This is to conform to the conventions of thriller movie. However the female character from the past will be wearing a red or blue dress. This subverts to the colours commonly seen in thriller movies. This is used to connote that she had some significance to the killer which signifies his obsession. When showing the flashback we will either use a filter or make the scene black and white. This it to connote to the audience that this is in the past.
