Locations, costumes and props 2

In this presentation, I will be explaining my second ideas for location, costumes and props in my film opening idea.

Location

The location of the film opening would be near Whitestone pond at Hampstead Heath.

I think this would be the best location to create this sequence as it offers the same iconographic setting as most common thrillers/horrors do, being a woods like environment.

The scenes after this will be shots of the main character at home looking in the bathroom mirror and getting ready in the front room.

CostumesMain character – muddy boots, torn trousers and shirt. My initial ideas were to have this character wearing a tank top and tracksuit bottoms to exaggerate the blood on his t-shirt and body. However, this is not a common convention of horror films, so I decided to change the clothing to make it more appropriate for the narrative.

I have used this costume to be more fitting to the character and genre as it connotes more to the horror genre and shows more mystery to the character as his clothing would be bloody and torn. The muddy boots adds to the realistic setting I am trying to create.

After the first scene of this character, the opening will cut back 24 hours before this event showing the main character at home. Here he will be wearing casual trousers and a t-shirt.

The news reporter will be wearing smart casual clothes to represent the importance of their job and show they are professional.

Props

For the weapon, I initially wanted to use a machete as this connotes a typical horror movie because this weapon is iconographic in terms of this genre. However, I didn’t want to create an effective horror opening to I decided to change the weapon to a hammer. This weapon would make my character more fierce and aggressive towards his victim and show his desperation of killing. This weapon fits into a psychological thriller which is what I am trying to create.

The fake blood will be used at the beginning of the opening to show the character has killed someone. The blood will be presented all over the chest and face of this person.

After the beginning of the opening credits, two people will be seen venturing into the woods. They would have a rucksack like this one to connote that they’re backpackers preparing to stay in the woods.

The character will also have a tattoo on his arm to able the audience to identify this from the dark lit character. I have also chosen to do this in an attempt to imitate cult films that use little details on the characters that make them popular.

I will also need to film a news report on a serial killer to be used at home on the TV. The reporter would need a mic to talk into.

A mobile phone for when the character receives a phone call.
