The Film and Dropwise Condensation Unit, “TCPGB”, has been specially designed for students use and to provide visual results and quantitative results related to heat transfer during condensation.Self-contained unit, which has its own steam generator and air extraction system, as well as condensers to provide dropwise and filmwise condensation.Condensers: In film form: The condenser is made of natural copper with a built-in heat exchanger to preheat the cooling water. This serves to
ensure that there is little variation in the temperature of the external copper face in which the vapour condenses. Three equally spaced thermocouples are fixed to the condenser. The cooling water inlet and outlet connections on the condenser are fitted with thermocouples for measuring the inlet and outlet water temperatures.
In the form of drops: This is similar to the film-shaped condenser, except that the external surface of the condenser is gold plated to cause condensation in the form of drops.
The steam chamber is a thick-walled vertical glass cylinder, containing approximately 0.5 kg H2O, usually as saturated water and saturated steam. The bottom plate carries an electrical heating resistance that converts water into steam at a rate determined by the input of electrical current. This steam circulates upwards towards the two condensers where it condenses by transferring the heat to the cooling water, and the condensed steam returns to the lower end of the chamber for re-evaporation. The water heating element is wound in a spiral and a control probe operates a thermostat which cuts off the action of the heating element in the event of overheating due to a shortage of water. The chamber is equipped with three partitions to reduce the amount of splashes from the strong boiling.
Bench-top unit.Anodized aluminum structure and panels in painted steel.Main metallic elements in stainless steel.Diagram in the front panel with similar distribution to the elements in the real unit.Steam chamber: thick-walled glass cylinder with aluminum ends and PTFE. seals: Capacity: 0.5 – 1 kg of distilled water approx. Inner diameter of the chamber: 95 mm. Chamber length: 450 mm.Two water cooled condensers, mounted in the upper cylinder cover: Dimensions: 12.7 mm external diameter and 200 mm effective length. They are specially designed and manufactured of cooper, incorporating a heat exchanger in order to
reduce the surface temperature variation to a minimum: Dropwise condenser gold plated. Filmwise condenser natural finish. Each condenser is provided with five connected temperature sensors (”K” type) to measure the mean
metal temperature.Electric heating element with thermal protection, power: 3 kW.Air extraction system, composed by air cooler, separator and water jet vacuum pump with the necessary valves.Pressure meter to measure the chamber pressure, range: -1 – 3 bar.Two flow meters, range: 0.2 – 2 l/min.Two temperature sensors (”K” type) to measure of steam at the top and bottom of the chamber.Safety: Pressure relief valve fitted to upper cylinder cover. Safety pressure switch. Heater thermal protection (120 ºC thermostat).Electronic console: Metallic box. Temperature sensors connections. Selector for temperature sensors. Digital display for temperature sensors. Switch and regulator for the electric heating element. Wattmeter display. On/Off main switch.Cables and Accessories, for normal operation.Manuals: This unit is supplied with following manuals: Required Services, Assembly and Installation, Starting-up, Safety, Maintenance &
Practices Manuals.
INTRODUCTION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
SPECIFICATIONS
The use of steam in order to produce electricity and for conducting heat has a long story, so it is reasonable to think that it will keep on being used in these fields during the near future. In all the applications, it is necessary to condense the steam as it transfers the heat to a refrigerant environment. Such environment could be cold water in the condensers of a generating plant, hot water in an overheating heater, a solution of sugar in a sugar refinery, etc. During the condensation operation, some elevated heat flows may be produced and as long as the heat is transferred quickly from the condensing surface to a refrigerant environment, the steam used in heat exchangers can be compact and effective. The heat in a surface can be condensed in two ways denominated drops or film. Because of the same temperature difference between the steam and the surface, the condensation as drops is much more effective, this is the reason why the condensation as drops is more desirable than the latter one, although it is rarely seen for extended periods in practical installations. The Film and Dropwise Condensation Unit, "TCPGB", allows the visual and quantitative study of the condensation process in drops and film.
