CASTALIAN QUARTET GILLES VONSATTEL, piano DAVÓNE TINES, baritone The award-winning London-based Castalian Quartet makes its Festival debut with two Festival favorites—pianist Gilles Vonsattel and baritone Davóne Tines—to perform Schumann’s marvelous piano quintet as well as Barber’s remarkable setting of the famous poem. Davóne’s moving performance in the 2018 Festival is only part of his skyrocketing career, with recent major performances at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lincoln Center, and Harvard’s ART. Gilles joins Castalian for Schumann’s Piano Quintet, Op. 44, bringing dramatic balance between the kinetic energy and sublime pastoral passages.

Come out for an evening of Beethoven—with the world-renowned Brentano Quartet, currently the Resident String Quartet at Yale University, performing the first of Beethoven’s late quartets, Op. 127. The second half of the concert is a spectacular chamber performance of Beethoven’s unequivocally greatest of symphonies—the Ninth (including the incomparable “Ode to Joy”), in an arrangement for piano, chorus and soloists. The evening’s star power continues with Juno-nominated pianist Stewart Goodyear joined by renowned soloists at the height of their career and the acclaimed Handel & Haydn Chorus for a truly memorable Opening Night.

HORSZOWSKI TRIO WITH BARRY SHIFFMAN, violaEnsemble-in-Residence of the Leschetizky Association and the Longy School of Music, the Horszowski Trio has received tremendous acclaim for their release of Schumann’s complete piano trios. MARIAM BATSASHVILI, pianoFirst Prize Winner at the 2014 Liszt Piano Competition, pianist Mariam Batsashvili brings an evening of romantic piano music. Her program culminates with Liszt’s piano pyrotechnics with his take on the most popular waltz from the most beloved opera of the day, as well as bringing two rarely played, but impressive works—Franck’s reflective Prélude, Fugue et Variation, and Thalberg’s flashy Caprice on themes from a Bellini opera in which the pianist displays a bit of “magic” by seemingly playing the piano with three hands.

Bach wrote these accompanied sonatas as an integrated set and they have had a dramatic influence on composers, and artists, ever since. LAWRENCE STRING QUARTETThe St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ) is renowned for the intensity of its performances, its breadth of repertoire, and its commitment to concert experiences that are at once intellectually exciting and emotionally alive. Ensemble-in-Residence at Stanford since 1998, the SLSQ is hailed by critics as both “modern” and “superb.” The SLSQ will bring Schafer’s Quartet, No. 3, which they performed at the 1996 Festival, and will also open and close the concert in sublime style with Haydn.

After a spectacular inaugural festival last summer, Brian O’Donovan and Maeve Gilchrist return for their 2nd Annual Rockport Celtic Festival, created in partnership with Rockport Music.

The 2020 Festival will trace the connections between Celtic and Scandinavian music—Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and the Orkney and Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland. The Scandinavian cultures have as much in common with the Celtic isles as mainland Scotland. Additionally, the Festival will bring back the sea shanties, work songs and nautical music and lore, as well as the Words and Music program, and the “after hours” sessions upstairs. Saturday night brings the return of the extraordinary chamber orchestra Palaver Strings which brought many exceptional musical moments last year.
