Abstract: The effect of ion irradiation on the superconducting transition temperature T-c and resistivity rho(ob)(T) Of YBa2Cu3O7-x films with different oxygen content (initial temperature T-c0 approximate to 90 K and 60 K) is studied experimentally. The dependencies T-c/T-c0 on residual resistivity rho(0) are obtained in very wide range 0.2 < T-c/T-c0 < 1 and 0 < rho(0) < 800 mu Omega . cm. The critical values of rho(0), corresponding to the vanishing of superconductivity, are found to be an order of magnitude larger then those predicted by theory for d-wave pairing. At 0.5 divided by 0.6 < Tc/T-c0 < 1 the experimental data are in close agreement with theoretical dependencies, obtained for the anisotropic s-wave superconductor within the BCS-framework.

Abstract: The existence of a metastable cluster He-4(*) with total spin S = 2 is predicted. The cluster consists of two covalently bound excited spin-polarized triplet He-2(*) molecules and is rectangular in shape. The electron wavefunctions, the dependence of the energy of

the He-4(*) system on the distance between the He-2(*) triplet molecules, the atomic spacing, the frequency spectrum of natural oscillations of the cluster, and other characteristics are calculated from first principles. It is shown that the metastable state is formed if one of the excited He-2(*) molecules is in the (3)Sigma(u)(+) state, while the other is in the (3)Pi(g) state. The radiation lifetime tau of the metastable cluster He-4(*) is calculated; it is found to range from 100 to 200 s, which is much longer than the lifetime tau approximate to 20 s of the triplet molecule He-2(*)((3)Sigma(u)(+)). The height U approximate to 0.5 eV of the potential barrier preventing the departure from the local energy minimum is determined. The energy E-acc approximate to 9 eV/atom accumulated in the He-4(*) cluster is calculated; this energy considerably exceeds the energy of known chemical energy carriers. It is shown that the accumulated energy is released virtually completely during decomposition of the He-4(*) cluster into individual helium atoms. This means that helium clusters are a promising material with a high accumulated energy density (HEDM). © 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Abstract: The paper presents a numerical solution of a system of nonlinear equations for the electron distribution functions in the upper and lower subbands between which lasing transitions occur and the number of nonequilibrium optical phonons in semiconducting cascade lasers based on quantum wells and wires. For the case of quantum wells, we propose an analytical solution of this system of equations, which is a generalization of the previously found solution [V. F. Elesin and Yu. V. Kopaev, Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fit. 108, 2186 (1995) [JETP 81, 1192 (1995)]; V. F. Elesin and Yu. V. Kopaev, Sol. St. Commun. 96, 897 (1995)] in a wider range of injection rates. The threshold injection rate can be significantly reduced owing to reabsorption and accumulation of nonequilibrium optical phonons, nonparabolicity of the subbands and different effective masses of electrons in different subbands. In the case of quantum wires, the threshold injection rate is considerably lower, and its decrease is even larger than in quantum wells. It is remarkable that, owing to the lower electron-electron relaxation rate in the one-dimensional case, the decrease in the threshold injection rate may be two or three orders of magnitude. Abstract: Calculations of the electronic structure of strongly correlated systems carried out by the slave-boson method are compared with exact numerical solutions for finite clusters. The ''slave-boson'' method is found to be a very good approximation for studying not only the single-band Hubbard model but also multiband Hubbard models. It yields the characteristics of the ground state within an error similar to 1%. The reasons for the large discrepancy observed previously [S. N. Molotkov et al., JETP Lett. 59, 847 (1994)] between the slave-boson results and the exact solution are identified. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: The values of the insulator gap DELTA in finite 1D systems of interacting bosons, which can be described by a Hamiltonian of the Hubbard type, are calculated numerically through an exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix. The critical value (t/U)c = 0.275+/-0.005 is found through extrapolation to an infinite system. At this critical value, there is a transition from an insulating state to a superfluid state in a chain in which the number of bosons is equal to the number of sites. This value of (t/U)c is close to the exact result found analytically for a reduced Hamiltonian. The reduced model is a good approximation at t/U almost-equal-to (t/U)c. In the critical region we have DELTA approximately exp[-b(1-t/t(c))-1/2], where b almost-equal-to 0.2. (C) 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Spatially nonuniform and time-varying distributions of defects are analyzed under the conditions of a diffusion instability. The defects are produced by a steady-state, uniform source. They undergo a mutual recombination. A new instability, which may arise, will increase the total number of defects continuously and exponentially as the result of a spatial redistribution of recombination.

Abstract: Our numerical calculations on small carbon clusters point to the existence of a metastable three-dimensional eight-atom cluster

Cg which has a shape of a six-atom triangular prism with two excess atoms above and below its bases. We gave this cluster the name "prismane." The binding energy of prismane is 5.1 eV/atom, i.e., 0.45 eV/atom lower than the binding energy of the stable one-dimensional eight-atom cluster and 2.3 eV/atom lower than the binding energy of bulk graphite or diamond. Molecular dynamics simulations give evidence for a rather high stability of prismane, the activation energy for prismane decay being about 0.8 eV. The prismane lifetime increases rapidly as the temperature decreases, indicating the possibility of experimental observation of this cluster. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. Abstract: A theory of coherent lasing on a double-well structure with asymmetric barriers is constructed. On account of the appearance of a termination point of the bottom subband, such a structural element permits strong suppression of intersubband relaxation involving the emission of an optical phonon. It is shown that such a laser possesses low threshold currents and high lasing power, and it can operate without a population inversion. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: The anisotropy parameter chi, which appears in the formula for the critical temperature T-c, as a function of the concentration of defects, is calculated on the basis of the results of experimental studies of the Fermi surface and superconducting gap Delta in high-T-c superconductors by the method of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. It is shown that the assumption of anisotropic s-pairing makes it possible to correlate the strong angular dependence of Delta in the a-b plane with the relatively weak sensitivity of T-c to atomic disordering. In this case chi approximate to 0.1, which is an order of magnitude less than in the case of d-pairing (chi=1) and strongly anisotropic s-pairing (chi less than or equal to 1). Abstract: The existence of a cage-like metastable carbon cluster C-8 (prismane) is predicted theoretically. This cluster is the smallest three-dimensional carbon cluster ever reported in the literature. Two prismanes are shown to form intercluster covalent bonds suggesting a possibility for the formation of bulk prismane-based carbon structures.

Abstract: Stability of recently predicted cage-like carbon cluster Cs (prismane) against its transformations to lower energy structures is studied theoretically. The smallest energy barrier inhibiting prismane transformation is shown to be 0.44 eV, in qualitative agreement with the value of activation energy for prismane decay calculated by molecular dynamics simulations. A rather high value of the barrier suggests the possibility of experimental observation of this cluster at ambient pressure.

Abstract: Highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) was irradiated with argon ions at energies of 45 and 55 eV. Small ion doses were applied to the sample to ensure that single defects would not interfere. Both the sample irradiation and the STM measurements were carried out under the UHV conditions. Two different types of features (dark and bright) were found simultaneously in the STM image inside the: single frame. The dark features can transform irreversibly to the bright ones during the scanning, or can disappear. Judging by defect transformation, it is possible to assume that the dark defects are vacancies, while the bright ones are either Ar interstitials or Vacancies with some atomic duster adsorbed on them.

Abstract: Formation of clusters of interlayer interstitial carbon atoms in graphite is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulation. It is shown that the deformation potential is attractive for interstitials located within the same interlayer region and repulsive for interstitials located in different interlayer regions. As a result, relatively small interstitial clusters are formed which are arranged in a checkerboard-like order.

Abstract: A rigorous quantum mechanical theory of the coherent resonant tunneling diode is presented. Exact analytical solution of the set of equations describing the generation is obtained. Abstract: Recently we have shown [V. F. Elesin, A. V. Krasheninnikov, and L. A. Openov, Sov. Phys. JETP 79, 789 (1994)] that in the hole-doped Cu4O8 cluster pairing correlations with sk symmetry are nearly twice as strong as those with d(x2-y2) symmetry, while in the electron-doped cluster pairing correlations seem to be present in the s* channel only. In this paper the effect of on-site disorder on the pairing correlators with s* and d(x2-y2) symmetry in the Cu4O8 cluster is studied numerically through an exact diagonalization of the Emery-Anderson Hamiltonian. It is shown that at a nearly optimal doping level (0.25 excess holes per copper atom) the disorder weakens pairing correlations in the d(x2-y2) channel and has much less influence on pairing correlations in the s* channel. Based on the results obtained, the ''superconducting'' components of pairing correlators are estimated to be 10-30 % of their full values, with the remaining parts of correlators being contributions from a finite-size effect. These results indicate that cluster calculations may be relevant for the study of high-T-c superconductibility.

Abstract: The numerical solution of a system of non-linear kinetic equations for electron distribution functions and non-equilibrium phonons is obtained for quantum cascade intersubband lasers on quantum wells and wires. In the case of quantum wells the analytical solution of system of equations is found. The possibility of lowering the threshold current as a result of the accumulation and reabsorption of optical phonons and due to different effective masses of electrons in subbands is demonstrated. For lasers on quantum wires the lowering of threshold current takes place also, with the rate being greater as for lasers on wells.

Abstract: The influence of nonstoichiometric disorder on the in-plane resistivity and SC-transition has been investigated for Nd2-xCexCuO4+delta Single crystal films (x = 0.15 and 0.18). It is shown that with increasing of delta the in-plane normal state resistivity increases (the mean free path diminishes) and SC-transition temperature decreases with essential broadening of the transition region. The observed evolution from homogeneous metallic (and superconducting) Nd2-xCexCuO4+delta system to inhomogeneous dielectric one is described as Anderson-type disorder-induced transition in a two-dimensional electron system. Abstract: Making use of the photoemission data on the dependence of the order parameter Delta on the in-plane momentum k and of the tight-binding fit to the Fermi surfaces in hole-doped high-T-c superconductors, we have calculated the anisotropy parameter (chi) which enters into the formula for T-c versus impurity concentration in an anisotropic s wave superconductor. We have found that (chi) is as low as similar to 0.1 in a wide range of hole doping and for different sets of model parameters adjusted to describe the experimental observations of Delta(k) and Fermi surface in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. Our results reconcile the large anisotropy of Delta in k space (i.e. not a simple s wave) with the weak sensitivity of T-c to defects and structural inhomogeneities (i.e. probably not a d(x2-y2) wave) and are compatible with the anisotropic s wave symmetry of Delta(k) in hole-doped high-T-c superconductors. Experiments [H. Ding et al., Phys. Rev. B 50 (1994) 1333] on electron irradiation of the twin-free single crystal of Yba2Cu3O7-delta are consistent with a value of (chi) approximate to 0.3.

Abstract: Caused by magnetic field H broadening delta T-H of resistive transition width has been measured for high-T-c c-oriented films irradiated by He++ ions. Found relation delta T-H=B.H-2/3 with the coefficient B depending on fluence is interpreted in terms of flux motion and order parameter fluctuations. The delta T-H anisotropy proves low sensitive to the irradiation. Decrease of the transition midpoint shift anisotropy is considered as a display of H-c2 anisotropy lowering.

Abstract: He++ ion irradiation effect on resistive characteristics and upper critical field H-c2(T) of YBa2CU3O7 and HoBa2Cu3O7 c-axis oriented films has been studied. Analyzing the normal states resistivity modification and T-c degradation with fluence F, we estimated the Hc(2)(T) change in GLAG theory. The -dH(c2)/dT rise with F has been found. The measured resistive transition midpoint shift T-cH-T-c in magnetic field proves higher, then one found from the estimated H-c2(T). So, the transition broadening has been found to be the main effect, determining the T-cH-T-c, at least for high fluences.

Abstract: On the basis of exact diagonalization of the Emery Hamiltonian the effect of the Anderson disorder on the density of states (DOS) for the two-dimensional cluster Cu4O8 is numerically investigated. The results indicate the broadening of spikes in the DOS. The shrinkage of the charge-transfer gap takes place both for the undoped insulating state as well as for the electron- and hole-doped metallic states. The rapid decrease of the DOS near the Fermi energy occurs for the doped system giving rise to the metal-insulator transition at a certain critical value of the disorder parameter.

Abstract: The T(c) dependence on the density of radiation defects for the electron-type high-T(c) superconductor Nd2-xCeCuO4-y was measured. It was found that in this material as well as in the hole-type HTSC T(c) dropped to zero at some critical defect concentration. However the value of the critical concentration was ten times less in the former case. The temperature dependence of the critical fluence and other results indicate the same mechanisms of suppression of superconductivity by defects in both types of HTSC.

Abstract: Point-contact measurements on bilayers Ag-Yba2cu3o7-delta (delta = 0, 0.3) with Au tip as the counter electrode are reported. With our procedure we obtained good reproducible Andreev reflection characteristics that show the gap feature in the dV/dI versus V curves. A gap parameter DELTA = 10 meV has been obtained for both 60 K and 90 K samples. The dynamics of R(V) with the magnetic field and temperature variations have been investigated.

Abstract: The binding energies of excess carriers (holes or electrons) as functions of the in-plane copper-oxygen hopping matrix element

are calculated numerically by an exact diagonalization of the EmerY Hamiltonian for the two-dimensional Cu4O8 cluster. Based on the results of the calculations, a qualitative explanation is given for experimental findings concerning the pressure dependence of T(c) in hole-doped and electron-doped high-T(c) superconductors. The possibility of Positive dT(c)/dP in electron-doped high-T(c) superconductors is predicted.

Abstract: The Schrodinger equation with open boundary conditions was solved numerically; the solutions make it possible to describe the coherent oscillations in a resonance-tunnel diode in a wide range of frequencies and amplitudes of the fields. In an approximation linear in the field and in the adiabatic limit, the results of numerical and analytical calculations coincide with a high degree of accuracy. The dependences of the power of oscillations on the current and the parameters of the resonance-tunnel diode were derived. It is shown that, in the quantum-mechanical mode, oscillations with high power are possible at the frequencies that exceed the level width (i.e., in the terahertz range). Abstract: The current and emitted (absorbed) power of a rf electric field in a resonant-tunneling diode are found as functions of the bias voltage and frequency of the electromagnetic field by solving numerically the nonstationary Schrodinger equation. It is shown that amplification (generation) is possible for voltages in a range substantially above the region of negative differential resistance and that the maximum frequencies are much higher than the values calculated for this region. Abstract: The effect of impurities on the steady-state charge distribution and the current-voltage characteristics of a three-well nanostructure is examined theoretically. The impurities can strongly influence the distribution and current of electrons, causing a redistribution of the charge density among the quantum wells. They can reduced the height of the peaks on the current-voltage characteristic and can change the peak-to-valley ratio.

Abstract: The exact solution is found of the system of coupled kinetic equations for the distribution functions of electrons and optical phonons in Quantum Cascade Laser. It is shown that under definite conditions the processes of optical phonon accumulation and reabsorption take place. The threshold current can be substantially reduced in such a situation due to the increase of the upper subband electrons lifetime. The effect is proportional to the difference in effective masses in upper and lower subbands which results from the nonparabolicity of bare energy spectrum.

Abstract: Results of exact numerical calculations on a hole-doped Cu4O8 cluster with U-d --> oo, U-p --> oo are presented and compared with analytic solution for the infinite CuO2 plane. It is concluded that the size of the Cu4O8 cluster is sufficient to account for the effects of hole attraction and instability in the infinite two-dimensional system with strong short-range interactions.

Abstract: By means of polarized K-Cu XANES we have received a direct evidence that the radiative defects in Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 superconductor caused by He+ ions ( E=1,2MeV ) are placed off the CuO2 plane. The charge redistribution in the Cu-O-Nd(Ce) chains due to the oxygen displacement in irradiated films is essential for superconductivity destruction.

Abstract: Making use of the tight-binding Green's function technique, we have calculated the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of graphite with surface and sub-surface defects, while taking into account the relaxation of the lattice due to defects. We have demonstrated that two different physical mechanisms may result in the formation of hillocks in the STM images: buckling of the graphite surface due to interstitials between the uppermost graphite layers; and the enhancement of the electron density of states close to the Fermi energy on the carbon atoms in the vicinity of vacancies. Our results indicate that small hillocks may originate both from the interstitial clusters and from the vacancies. By contrast, however, large hillocks in excess of 10 Angstrom in diameter can be caused only by interstitial clusters. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Formation of clusters of interstitial carbon atoms between the surface and second atomic layers of graphite is demonstrated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that interstitial clusters result in the domelike surface features that may be associated with some of the hillocks observed by scanning tunneling microscopy on the irradiated graphite surface. Abstract: For the cases of hole and electron doping, the effect of Anderson disorder on the binding energy-DELTA of excess carriers and ground state correlation functions in the Cu4O8 cluster is analyzed numerically through an exact diagonalization of the Emery Hamiltonian. It is shown that \DELTA\ decreases with the growth of the disorder parameter W and vanishes for a certain critical value W(c). The ratio W(c)/\DELTA(W = 0)\ is invariant (about 9 and 7 for holes and electrons, respectively) in a wide range of the values DELTA(W = 0) corresponding to the various choice of the Hamiltonian parameters. The increase of W leads to weakening antiferromagnetic correlations in the undoped dielectric state and to their partial recovery when the system has excess carriers. The results

obtained are explained in the framework of the hypothesis about the magnetic mechanism for the effective attraction of carriers.

Abstract: The ground state energy of two-dimensional Cu-O clusters consisting of 8 and 12 atoms with various occupation numbers is calculated numerically by exact diagonalization of the Emery hamiltonian. It is demonstrated that not only effective attraction of holes [11] but also of electrons occurs in a broad range of the parameters. The stability with respect to phase separation is considered. The copper and oxygen occupation numbers and spin-spin and density - density correlation functions are calculated. It is shown that doped electrons disrupt antiferromagnetic order in the same way as holes. Thus addition of an electron (hole) to the undoped state leads to greater disruption of antiferromagnetic order than does the addition of another electron (hole). It is suggested that the attraction between two electrons or holes may be due to a decrease of the size of the region with disrupted antiferromagnetic order (and to a corresponding lowering of the total energy) when the two doped electrons (holes) are close to each other.
