Most student members of ASME have opted for a free membership, and are therefore not receiving the magazine (Mechanical Engineering).I would have brought a luggage carrier to handle the box of promotional material, and some velcro tabs and safety pins to hang signage on table skirt. Our section should try to get more firms that hire ME's to sponsor the career fair. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the Engineers Club (EC) plans for the coming year and some of the accomplishments of the past year.About 25 people attended, mostly Civil Engineers. Aside from myself and David Hughes, the only non Civil society was IEEE (1 person). Before the meeting started, Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz was introduced. She was at Pennoni Engineers for a meeting with staff. She made what seemed to be a campaign speech to our group. It was interesting.Delaware Valley Engineers WeekThe club is actively seeking nominations for Engineer of the Year (EOY) and Young Engineer of the Year (YEOY). Nominations for EOY are due in October and for YEOY are due by November. If we want, we have time to nominate people for these awards. The clubs golf outing is October 1, 2012.Student Outreach WebsiteThe EC is developing a web site for to promote engineering for students. IBM will develop the web site under contract to the Club. IBM is also providing funding ($200,000) for the work. IBM has developed one web site (http://stempowered.svefoundation.org/) which is based in California.Individual societies will be able to enter information about their society activities directed to students.Joint Society Meeting OpportunitiesThe EC will be sponsoring joint society meetings in December. We will be able to post our meeting information on their web site. We usually dont have a meeting in December but maybe we should consider having one.Collegiate Student Outreach EventThe EC is looking for programs to include in outreach presentations.Newspapers in EducationThe final version of the newspaper for students was handed out. The mechanical engineering presentation was very limited. According to the paper mechanical engineers make gears and design air conditioning systems. I talked to Colette Montague on Wednesday May 3 and she said that the Inquirer limited text that was included in the paper. The air conditioning description was included because one of the major sponsors was an air condition vendor and they insisted that it be added. But none of the write up we sent was included. This was probably the case for other societies also. It might have been considered too complicated for high school students.Engineering in the City Public DisplaysThe EC is proposing that public placards be placed throughout the city to publicize Engineering in the City. The plaques would be similar to the historic landmarks which are located throughout Philadelphia. The problem with this for mechanical engineering is that not much of mechanical engineering is visible as you walk through a city. Engineering which is seen is Civil engineering. This illustrated the influence of Civil Engineers in the Engineers Club. The example that was used for mechanical engineering was the carousel located in Franklin Square. This is not a serious example of mechanical engineering. If we participate in this effort, we have to come up with a serious example of mechanical engineering. The cost for each display starts at $10,000 and the display is not permanent.
