resources/phase/3/train-your-brain-ph3
Children will need 1:1 support with Phonics book 5 Pages 18 & 19 to practise writing sentences containing the
tricky words you and was. Outdoor Learning: you could create a tricky word
hopscotch outside- every time they land on a word they have
to say it.
As part of our topic for the next few weeks we are going to be learning and thinking
about different animals which would make a good pet.
Listen to or read the story Dear Zoo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rudDGRQ9QGA
On each page of the book discuss whether they think
they will be able to keep the pet. Why might they not be
able to keep it? What is good about the pet? What might be
a problem with the pet?
Explain that there are some animals we cannot keep as
pets because we would not be able to look after them
properly and some animals are too dangerous to keep as
pets.
If they could have any pet in the world which animal would they choose? What colour fur would it have? What would
they call it?
Using a separate line for each work can they write 3
Sentences about their dream pet?
I would like a…. I would call it/him/her…
They/he/she would have… fur/scales/feathers.
Extension: Can they draw a picture of their dream pet to show us what it would look
like? We would really love to see the writing about your pets and your pictures so please
Can they have a go at writing the full date on their work?
Explain that words they see more often than others are
called high frequency or common words. You need to practise them to make sure
you can read them.
Use the Phase 3 high frequency words video to practise blending some of
these words:https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=QrrGIGwIC-g
Children will need 1:1 support with Phonics book 5 Pages 20 & 21 to practise reading
the sentences containing some of these high frequency
words.
Phonics/Music: Play the animal sounds match
up game:https://
www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/match-sounds?phase=1
Sing the song, ‘Old McDonald Had a Farm’. Instead of saying the name of the
animal, make the sound. Can your child figure out which animal it is and write the
word? The children could also write the digraphs/ trigraphs
they can hear in the song e.g. ee, igh, ee, igh, oa
Listen to and learn the song Old MacDonald had a farm.

Watch the phase 4 final consonant blends. Can they
join in sounding out the different words containing mp, nk, st, nd and ft?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-1rmuOxGE8
Children will need 1:1 support with Phonics book 5 Pages 24 & 25 to practise reading
the sentences containing some of these high frequency
words.
Guided reading/Science: floating and sinking. Using the word document (on the school website) read the non-fiction text- This floats, That sinks.
Discuss the difference between fiction and non-
fiction texts. At the end of the text can you complete the floating and sinking task?
Can the children predict which items will sink or float each
time and say why? Will changing the shape of an
object affect whether it will float or sink. For
example, a ball of Plasticene placed in a bowl of water will
sink. If you now make the same ball of Plasticene into a boat shape and place it gently on the water, it should float. Will changing the material of an object affect whether is
sinks or floats. Which will float a metal spoon or a plastic
spoon?
Sing the months of the year song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5enDRrWyXaw
RE: Discuss how today it is the first day in the month of May. For Catholics May is an important month when we think about Mary. Who was
Mary? Why was Mary important? Discuss how Mary is the mother of Jesus and she was chosen specially by God
to be Jesus’ mother. Talk about why mothers are
important. Why do you love your own mum? What do they do for you? How can you show
your mum that you love them?
Explain that we have a special prayer for Mary which many
of them will have heard during our school assemblies.
Can they remember the prayer?
Activity: During the month of May we usually decorate
church and our classrooms with flowers to help us think
about Mary. As we are unable to do this we would like you to
make or draw some flowers for Mary. Any photograph’s
we receive will be emailed to
feel free to email us photographs of your work.

PM Maths – Ordering Numbers
Big numbers songhttps://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=e0dJWfQHF8Y
Write/type numbers 1-30 and cut them out into separate pieces. Can children put all numbers into the correct
order? (If children find this difficult, begin with 1-10
numbers, then give them 11-20 to add on then 21-30).
When they have completed this, put all the numbers back together. Pick out 5 numbers and place them in a row (not in order). Can they put them
in order from smallest to biggest? Repeat this a few
times.
Complete page 5 of the maths workbook.
Extension: can children order bigger numbers from smallest
to biggest (e.g. numbers between 1-50 or 1-100)?
Why not try the caterpillar ordering numbers game?
Maths – Coin Sorting
Money song: https://www.youtube.com/wat
ch?v=dFzAU3u06Ps
Discuss the different types of coins there are and what we use money them for- recap the different coin values. In class we normally talk about the key features of each coin e.g. size, colour, number of
sides etc.
Using coins from a money box, piggy bank or purse, ask children to sort the coins into
their different values.
Maths – Addition while tidying
Use this time for children to help parents with jobs/chores around the house while also working on addition skills!
Washing machine addition – placing clothes in the washing machine, count them as you put them in. How many are
inside? Ask child to keep number in head. Add more clothes. Can you count on?
Home many clothes are in the washing machine now? This
activity can be done in different ways e.g. Putting clothes on washing line, tidying bedroom (books, teddies, colouring pencils
etc.)Making lunch (counting
ingredients used)
Extension: Can children write down and answer some
addition sums? Practise adding one more and 2 more- use the number line to help.
This could even be taken outside by creating a large
scale number line.
Maths – Patterns
Shape patterns gamehttps://www.topmarks.co.uk/
ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns
Parents: Collect sets of items which you have a large
number of (e.g. 5 teddies, 5 toys cars). Start a pattern for the children to finish (e.g. 1
teddy 2 cars 1 teddy). Repeat this with different numbers of items. This can also be done outside with pebbles, leaves,
flowers etc. Can children create their own repeating
patterns using different items?
Maths/Music – Pattern dancing
Practise number formation using the laminated sheet.
Explain to children that you can create patterns in
different ways. Show them how you can
make a repeating pattern by clapping. Ask them to repeat it back. Do this a few times
them ask them to clap a pattern for you to copy.
How else can we make a pattern? You can tap your
shoulders, knees, your head or your toes (e.g. tap hands, knees, head, hands, knees,
head etc.)
Taking it in turns, can children create a repeating pattern dance for others to follow?
Remember, the steps have to be repeated!
Outdoor activity: create a copy cat ‘dance mat’ game
using chalk, can children copy your dance step pattern?

Extension Challenge: what other ways can you sort the coins? (E.g. by colour, size,
number of sides etc.)
Have a go at the coin sorting game on Topmarks
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/coins-game
Have a go at the adding machine game.
https://www.starfall.com/h/addsub/add-machine-1/?
sn=math1--math0This can be used to practise
adding different numbers together
Extension challenge: Using 2/3 coloured pencils, can
children draw some repeating patterns using different
shapes?
Mary and flower Art/Craft ideas
Eggbox and lolly stick flowersHand print flowers Fork painting flowers
Make a flower crown using flowers/leaves which have blown off in the wind- remember not to pick flowers
unless you have been given permission. Colour the flowers and place an image of Mary in the
middle.http://www.catholicinspired.com/2011/07/mary-
walking-among-flowers-color-and.html
Using a printed picture as a guide can the children draw the other side of the flower?
Draw/paint/collage your own picture of Mary – Any photographs of your artwork will be sent to Fr Ged to be displayed in church for the month of May
Make a Mary tree - We would normally do this together in class
Find some twigs outside and place them in a pot or vase. Then make some different flowers and hang them on the tree to decorate it. Inside the middle of the flowers you could print or draw some images of Mary. http://www.catholicinspired.com/2011/05/flowering-mary-tree-project-craft-month.html?m=1
