Preparation of files for electronic assembly

Accepted files

Composite PDF files from version 1.4 onwards.

Principles of preparing PDF files: » File names cannot include any special characters (ą, ć, ł, *, <, +, etc.). » The design must be submitted in the scale of 1:1. » All fonts used in the document must be embedded or converted into curves. It is not recommended to replace fonts with a bitmap, as this can result in a lower print quality.

» Page dimensions must be identical for all document pages. » Files must be developed in the CMYK, Pantone or CMYK + Pantone colour schemes. » Bitmap graphics should have a resolution between 300 and 350 dpi. » Split lines should be the only markers used during file exporting, their net format offset should amount to min. 3 mm.

» Additional elements, such as: UV varnishes, presses, punching dies, etc., must be defined as 100% additional colour (spot), must have the set overprint and must be vector objects.

» The graphics of all elements must be prepared on punching die grids delivered by Fabryka Kart. » All 100%K elements will be overprinted automatically (fonts, curves). White overprints will be ignored. » Minimum line thickness for overprinted amounts to 0.2 pt. » It is unacceptable to include scans featuring a screen from previous printing in the files. » Each page of the PDF file must include a correctly defined Trimbox and Bleedbox. » The design must be centered in relation to the Trimbox and Bleedbox. » Due to the technology, a print of smooth tints and uniform colour backgrounds on bases with uneven surfaces (e.g. canvas structure) can result in emergence of small white spots in the raw material’s depressions.

Colour management

ICC profile: We recommend using the ISO Coated v2 300% (ECI) profile for all RGB-to-CMYK conversions (www.eci.org).

Total Ink Limit:

Maximum ink limit amounts to 300%.

Black gain:

In order to obtain a deep black colour, we recommend using the following values: C50% M40% Y30% K100%.

Small black graphics elements and texts should be defined as 100%K and have the overprint enabled. Grey elements on a colourful background are better replaced with greys triad.

Thin lines below 0.75 pt should be defined as a single colour. This will allow avoiding inaccuracies related to matching in the offset printing process.

Printed elements on finishing paint backgrounds (e.g. metallic) must have the overprint disabled, i.e. must be selected in the background. We use trapping for this type of elements. This does not apply to bitmap elements, in which trapping is done by the client. A trap should have approx. 0.07 mm in thickness, enabled overprint and must be an enlargement of the printed element on the background.

Product designations

» The principles of applying barcodes, their scaling and acceptable colour schemes are strictly by the standards available on websites concerning EAN barcode specifications. Barcodes and QR codes cannot be changed into a bitmap and developed in CMYK, because there is a risk of a code reading error. It is also necessary to remember about the protective area around the code – the code should be placed on a white field, not directly on the graphics.

» The use of product designations is determined by the commercial law (Directive 2009/48/EC), the symbols are not subject to modifications or the scope of modifications is strictly determined.

» Small symbols and logos must be placed as vector objects. Do not change them into a bitmap.

Submission of files to Fabryka Kart

The PDF files can be submitted electronically (FTP, e-mail, link to the “cloud”, etc.) and in the form of physical carriers (CD, DVD, pendrive).Prior to file submission, it is necessary to: » Conduct a preliminary inspection of the file (Preflight – Adobe Acrobat PRO); » Check the file’s colour separation (Output preview – Adobe Acrobat PRO); » Check the overprints; » Check whether the bleeds of all elements were correctly generated; » Check the central position of the design in relation to the Trimbox; » Check the content, any display errors, printing errors, dangling modifiers, correct orientation of front and back sides.

Submission of files for verification and client’s acceptance

The PDF files are submitted electronically (FTP, e-mail, link to the “cloud”, etc.).

Files submitted for verification must be always viewed with the overprint preview enabled (Adobe Acrobat / Reader – Ctrl + K -> Page display -> Overprint preview -> Always).

It is necessary to check the colour scheme (CMYK, Pantone colour separations), format of parts, content (texts and other objects), correct overprint display (especially of 100%K black and white).

Fabryka Kart verifies the clients’ files on many levels and makes all efforts to notify the client about any errors, but the company will not recognise claims concerning products in which defects result from incorrect preparation of files for production.

Fabryka Kart is not liable for changes in graphics resulting from incompetent use of the overprint.

Fabryka Kart corrects small errors in files in exceptional cases. All corrections in files are made at the client’s sole responsibility.

Fabryka Kart does not verify the correct position or compliance with the law of the aforementioned and similar characters.

WARNINGRisk of choking on small elements. Please keep the packaging on account of information specified on it.

Bleed

We distinguish two types of bleeds: external and internal, also known as the safe graphics margin. We use bleed for all cut and punched elements (cards, tuckboxes, boxes, punchboards, playboards, etc.). The external bleed should be a min. 3 mm for cards, tuckboxes, boxes and uncovered edges playboards. For playboards with covered edges, the bleed should be a min. 20 mm. Internal bleed (margin) should be a min. 3 mm for all elements, except for playboards, where it should be increased to 5 mm.

Card designs

The PDF files for card production must be prepared in accordance with the above guidelines. Additionally, the files must be divided into Front Sides, Back Sides and decks, provided that the design assumes more than one deck. The file nomenclature scheme should be as follows:

Front Side Deck 1 name.pdfBack Side Deck 1 name.pdfFront Side Deck 2 name.pdfBack Side Deck 2 name.pdf

The number and order of pages in each file should correspond to the number and order of cards in the ordered deck. If any card is to appear recursively in the deck, it is necessary to use it in the file as many times as is the quantity of the card in the deck. An exception is the case when a single card is to be repeated in the entire deck (common back side). » Deck of 55 cards: Front Side name.pdf (55 pages) Back Side name.pdf (55 pages)

» Two decks, 55 cards each, with a common back side: Front Side Deck 1 name.pdf (55 pages) Front Side Deck 2 name.pdf (55 pages) Back Side Deck 1 and 2 name.pdf (1 page)

Card areas, format and types

When designing the cards, it is necessary to take into consideration three basic fields of graphics.Graphics field, safe margin and bleed field.

In terms of the production process, cards can be divided into three basic methods of preparing the design’s graphics. Except for ornate cards, any other ones must have a border / margin in the same colour for the front or back sides. The front side frame can differ from the back side frame. The card cutting tolerance amounts to ±1 mm. » No-bleed cards (white border or no border);

» Full bleed cards (border or no border);

Tuckbox design

The PDF files for tuckbox production must be prepared in accordance with the principles of file preparation. The tuckbox designs must always be created based on the punching die grid delivered by Fabryka Kart. The punching die grid can be delivered as PDF or AI. The grid’s graphics are always in Spot colours and have the overprint enabled. Do not scale or change the colours or the grid’s overprint. The tuckbox production displacement tolerance amounts to ±1 mm.A folded tuckbox becomes a cuboid, we can therefore distinguish six main graphical areas. All grids of punched elements feature punching die lines. Cut line, crease line and fold line. Each of the graphics areas has its own safe margin and bleed. When designing tuckboxes, it is necessary to pay special attention to the bleed transitions between particular graphics areas. It is also necessary to pay attention to the transposition of the “Graphics area 4” bleed to the side wing. The bleed transposition is to nullify the risk of occurrence of a white cut at the point of tuckbox sealing.

Box designs

The PDF files for box production must be prepared in accordance with the principles of file preparation. The box designs must always be created based on the punching die grid delivered by Fabryka Kart. The punching die grid can be delivered as PDF or AI. The grid’s graphics are always in Spot colours and have the overprint enabled. Do not scale or change the colours or the grid’s overprint. The box production displacement tolerance amounts to ±1 mm.A box usually consists of a top and bottom flap. We build it from a cardboard with the thickness of 1.2 mm, 1.5 mm and 2 mm. The box’ grid consists of the following lines.

Cut line – box veneer cut line; Bleed line – minimum bleed line; Art box – boxes in which graphics are to be centered.

When designing the box, it is necessary to pay special attention to the transitions between particular graphics areas, veneer indentations on the boxes’ short sides and on side flaps on the veeneer’s longer sides.

The side flap and veneer indentation constitute the entire box after folding. Therefore, their graphics should be coherent.

Top flap

A box in which the graphics transition smoothly from the top / bottom to the side walls guarantees the best result. It is necessary to pay attention to maintain a safe margin (min. 3 mm) in all graphics areas and a correctly generated bleed (min. 3 mm).

Box insert designs

The PDF files for insert production must be prepared in accordance with the principles of file preparation. The insert designs must always be created based on the punching die grid delivered by Fabryka Kart. The punching die grid can be delivered as PDF or AI. The grid’s graphics are always in Spot line colours and have the overprint enabled. Do not scale or change the colours or the grid’s overprint. The insert production displacement tolerance amounts to ±1 mm.Box inserts are produced from cardboards with areal density from 250 g/m2 to 350 g/m2. When creating inserts, it is necessary to pay special attention to cardboard breaks and design the graphics in a manner that includes columns. The design must also take into consideration bleeds and safe margins (3 mm from each column and cut line).

Punchboard designs

The PDF files for punchboard production must be prepared in accordance with the principles of file preparation. The punchboard designs can be based on one’s punching die grids, however Fabryka Kart restricts the right to optimise the shape of the grids. The punching die grid must be delivered as PDF or AI. The grid must always be in Spot colours and have the overprint enabled. The punching die grid must be applied to the graphics. The punchboard grid’s front and back sides must be horizontal mirror images. We produce the punchboards from laminated cardboard with the thickness of 1.2 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm. The design must also take into consideration bleeds and safe margins (3 mm from each fold and cut line). The minimum distance between cut lines amounts to 6 mm. The production process always features displacements (during printing, lamination, punching). The punchboard’s grid displacement tolerance amounts to 1.5 mm. It is therefore very important to maintain min. of 3 mm of external bleeds and 3 mm of a safe graphics margin.

Very small elements in which it is impossible to maintain a safe margin inside the cut must be designed so that the punching die displacements do not have a substantial impact on the element’s final appearance.

The punchboard elements must be designed in a manner that nullifies the visibility of displacements. It is necessary to avoid using borders and edges that reflect the element’s shape. The displacement of graphics on the above elements is not as striking as in the case of the below elements. It is not possible to completely eliminate displacements in the punchboard production process.

Display designs

The PDF files for display production must be prepared in accordance with the principles of file preparation. The display designs can be created internally, but Fabryka Kart restricts the right to verify them and make the necessary modifications. The punching die grid can be delivered as PDF or AI. The grid’s graphics must always be in Spot colours and have the overprint enabled. The display production displacement tolerance amounts to ±1 mm.The function of a display is to emphasise the tuckboxes or boxes. The dimensions of a display are directly related to the dimensions of unit packaging in which it is to be placed. The fold line between graphics areas 5 and 6 can sometimes be replaced in part with the cut line in order for area 6 to gain a part of area 5 (Example on the next page). It is also necessary to pay attention to the transposition of the “Graphics area 4” bleed to the veneering side wing. The bleed transposition is to nullify the risk of occurrence of a white cut at the point of display veneering.

Playboard designs

The PDF files for playboard production must be prepared in accordance with the principles of file preparation. The playboard designs can be created internally, but Fabryka Kart restricts the right to verify them and make the necessary modifications. The punching die grid can be delivered as PDF or AI. The grid’s graphics must always be in Spot colours, have the overprint enabled and must be a vector object. The playboard production displacement tolerance amounts to ±1.5 mm. The safe margin that must be taken into consideration when designing the playboard amounts to 5 mm.When designing the playboards, it is necessary to pay special attention to various net and gross formats of the front and back sides. We produce playboards with covered edges or uncovered edges. A playboard can include up to 4 columns (higher number of columns must be agreed with Fabryka Kart).

Playboards with covered edges:Net format: we design the playboard’s front side in the target format, whereas the back side is reduced

by 5 mm on each side, e.g. two files are designed for a playboard with the target format of 300 x 300 mm – front side 300 x 300 mm + bleed and back side 290 x 290 mm + bleed.

Bleeds: front side – the bleed must amount to min. 23 mm, back side – the bleed must amount to min. 3 mm.

Playboards with uncovered edges (cut “sharp”):Net format: we design the playboard’s front side in the target format, e.g. two files are designed for a

playboard with the target format of 300 x 300 mm – front side and back side 300 x 300 mm + bleed.

Bleeds: front and back side – the bleed must amount to min. 3 mm.

Playboards with covered edges must be designed so that the safe margin’s graphics smoothly transition into the entire bleed area (a total of 28 mm). It is also necessary to remember that the playboard’s back side safe margin will be directly linked to the front side’s bleed. The linking point is at around the seventh milimetre of the front side’s bleed. It is therefore important for the front and back sides’ safe margin to be coherent in terms of colour. Playboard designs with uncovered edges do not require coherent colours of margins and bleeds, because they are not linked to one another.

Assuming that the background of our card is the same for all cards in the deck, we can use the master page and apply the same background to all cards simultaneously. It is necessary to remember to maintain the safe margin (3 mm).

Using the corner rounding function, Object -> Corner options...we apply the required radius to the graphics’ corners.

On the model page, we can add many elements that will be applied to all document pages.

It is very important for the graphics to be centered in relation to the net format as best as possible, because even slight displacements can be visible after the deck’s cutting.

When designing the elements that are based on the punching die’s grids, it is necessary to remember that the grid must always be placed on the highest layer and to check the “Transparent background” option during its placement (Ctrl + D).

Markers:Only cut lines, no other ones. Type: default Thickness: 0.25 pt.Displacement: no smaller than the bleed size.Bleed: If the bleed is defined in the document, we check the “Use the document bleed settings” option. If not, it is necessary to define the bleed manually. No less than 3 mm.

Colour: Colour conversion: Convert to target location (keep values) Used when the design includes CMYK elements or other colour spaces (RGB, LAB, not Pantone). Only then the CMYK colours will not be converted by the below profile and the elements in other spaces will be converted during file exporting to CMYK.

Convert to target location Used when we intend to change all colour values in the given design (aside from additional colours), e.g. when we want to reduce inking. It is however necessary to remember that all objects such as: text, vector and bitmap graphics or tonal transitions will be converted. After such conversion it is necessary to check the design very carefully in terms of colours.

Target location: we recommend the use of the ISO Coated v2 300% profile

Profile enclosing principle: Do not enclose profiles.

Paint manager: this menu allows for converting spot colours (Pantone, etc.) to CMYK and to alias one spot colour to another spot or one of CMYK.

Miejsce docelowe: zalecamy użycie profilu ISO Coated v2 300%

Reguła dołączania profilu: Nie dołączaj profilów.

Menedżer farb: to menu pozwala na zamianę kolorów dodatkowych (Pantone itp.) na CMYK oraz na nadawanie aliasów nazw kolorom dodatkowym.
