Brakes

This vehicle is equipped with a Continental TevesMk100 ABS, traction control, electronic stability controland a hydraulic brake system with diagonal brakecircuit split. The electronic brake control module(EBCM) and the brake pressure modulator is servicedseparately. The brake pressure modulator uses a fourcircuit configuration to control hydraulic pressure toeach wheel independently.• Antilock Brake System (ABS): When wheel slip

is detected during a brake application, an ABSevent occurs. During ABS braking, hydraulicpressure in the individual wheel circuits iscontrolled to prevent any wheel from slipping. Aseparate hydraulic line and specific solenoidvalves are provided for each wheel. The ABS candecrease, hold, or increase hydraulic pressure toeach wheel. The ABS does not, however, increasehydraulic pressure above the amount which istransmitted by the master cylinder during braking.

• Hydraulic Brake Assist: The hydraulic brakeassist function is designed to support the driver inemergency braking situations. The EBCMreceives inputs from the brake pressure sensor. When the EBCM senses an emergency brakingsituation, it will actively increase the hydraulicbrake pressure to a specific maximum by turningthe pump motor ON.

• Intelligent Brake Assist: The intelligent brakeassist function is designed to provide limitedbraking to help prevent front and rear low speedcollisions. The EBCM receives inputs from thebrake pedal position sensor, wheel speedsensors, short range radar and ultrasonic sensorsto detect a collision. When the EBCM senses apossible collision, it will actively increase thehydraulic brake pressure to apply the brakes.

• Optimized Hydraulic Brake System: With the2.0L engine, the EBCM monitors the vacuum inthe brake booster with a vacuum sensor andcontrols a brake booster vacuum pump dependingon vacuum sensor input. It also has a hydraulicbrake boost feature which supplements the brakesystem to maintain consistent brake performanceunder conditions of low brake booster vacuum.Low brake booster vacuum conditions can includeinitial start up after the vehicle has been parked forseveral hours, very frequent brake stops, or highaltitude driving. The hydraulic brake boost system

activates only during a brake apply under lowvacuum conditions. In this case the electronicbrake control module will actively increase andcontrol the hydraulic brake pressure by turning thepump motor ON and the appropriate solenoidvalves ON and OFF. When hydraulic brake boostis active, a series of rapid pulsations is felt in thebrake pedal.

• Electronic Stability Control: Electronic stabilitycontrol provides added stability during aggressivemaneuvers. Yaw rate is the rate of rotation aboutthe vehicle's vertical axis. The stability control isactivated when the electronic brake controlmodule determines that the desired yaw rate doesnot match the actual yaw rate as measured by theyaw rate sensor. The difference between thedesired yaw rate and the actual yaw rate is theyaw rate error, which is a measurement of oversteer or under steer. When a yaw rate error isdetected, the electronic brake control moduleattempts to correct the vehicle's yaw motion byapplying brake pressure to one or more of thewheels. The amount of brake pressure which isapplied varies, depending on the correctionrequired.

• Traction Control:When drive wheel slip is noted, the EBCM will enter traction control mode. First, the EBCM requests the engine control module(ECM) to reduce the amount of torque to the drivewheels via a serial data message. The ECMreduces torque to the drive wheels and reports theamount of delivered torque. If the engine torquereduction does not reduce drive wheel slip, theEBCM will actively apply the brakes on theslipping drive wheel. During traction controlbraking, hydraulic pressure in each drive wheelcircuit is controlled to prevent the drive wheelsfrom slipping. The EBCM commands the pumpmotor and appropriate solenoid valves ON andOFF to apply brake pressure to the slipping wheel.

• Hill Hold Start Assist: The hill hold start assistallows the driver to launch the vehicle without aroll back while moving the foot from the brakepedal to the accelerator pedal. The EBCMcalculates the brake pressure, which is needed tohold the vehicle on an incline and locks thatpressure for a certain time by commanding theappropriate solenoid valves ON and OFF whenthe brake pedal is released. Hill hold start assist isactivated when the EBCM determines that thedriver wishes to move the vehicle up-hill, eitherbackwards or forwards.

Engine

Shown is a typical view of a 2.0L Turbocharged Engine— RPO LTG

Overview

Performance from GM’s Ecotec family of enginescontinues to advance with the 2.0L Turbo — RPO LTG,which is based on a generation of large displacementfour cylinder engines which are designed for greaterefficiency. The turbocharger generates up to 20 pounds(138 kPa) of boost and its twin-scroll design helpsoptimize the usable power from the engine, virtuallyeliminating turbo lag and helping deliver a broad powerband. It also gives the engine the rapid throttleresponsiveness associated with a higher displacementnaturally aspirated high performance engine.Electronically controlled turbocharger supportingcomponents including the wastegate and bypass valve, help optimize performance and efficiency.

Engine Components Description and Operation

• Engine Block: The sand-cast aluminum 319T7cylinder block is a superior refinement of previousEcotec engine block castings. It is dimensionallysimilar with previous Ecotec turbo block variants, while providing improved structural support, aswell as enabling greater control of noise, vibrationand harshness. The main bearing bulkheads, which support the crank bearings, as well as thecylinder bore walls have been significantlystrengthened to support increased engine loads.Refinements to the oil distribution system enableimproved oil flow throughout the engine and anexpansion of the coolant jacket, along with the useof cast-in-place bore liners, allows more precisebore roundness and improves the block’s ability todissipate heat.

• Rotating Assembly: The crankshaft is made ofdrop forged steel with induction heat-treated filletsand cross-drilled chamfered oil passages forracing grade lubrication characteristics. Forgedpowdered metal connecting rods incorporate alarger, forged I-beam cross section for addedstrength in this turbocharged application. Thepistons in the 2.0L turbo are lightweight castaluminum, which reduces reciprocating massinside the engine. This enhances efficiency andthe feeling of performance as the rpm increases. The tops of the pistons have a dish shape thatdeflects injected fuel. Each piston has its owndirected jet that sprays oil toward its skirt, coatingits underside and the cylinder wall with anadditional layer of lubricant. The extra lubricationcools the pistons, reduces both friction andoperational noise and bolsters engine durability.

• Rotocast Aluminum Cylinder Head withSodium Filled Exhaust Valves: The Ecotec 2.0Lturbo's A356T6 aluminum cylinder head is castusing a Rotocast process for high strength, reduced machining and improved port flow. Thehead is also designed specifically for directinjection. The 2.0L turbo head has unique injectormounting locations below the ports. Apart frominjector installation, the head has conventionalport and combustion chamber designs, both areoptimized for direct injection and high boostpressure. The head uses stainless steel intakevalves that are nitrided for improved durability andundercut to improve flow and reduce weight. Theexhaust valves have sodium-filled stems thatpromote valve cooling. At normal engine operatingtemperatures, the sodium inside the valve stemfuses and becomes liquid. The liquid sodiumimproves conductivity, promoting heat transferaway from the valve face and valve guide to thecooler end of the stem, where it more readilydissipates. This helps maintain a lower, moreuniform valve temperature, reducing wear on thevalve guide for better alignment and a consistentseal between the valve seat and valve face overthe life of the engine. The exhaust manifold ismounted to the cylinder head and is made of caststainless steel. It is extremely durable and deliversexceptional airflow qualities.

• DOHC with Continuously Variable ValveTiming: Overhead cams are the most direct, efficient means of operating the valves, while fourvalves per cylinder increase airflow in and out ofthe engine. This arrangement is integrated on thelightweight aluminum cylinder head. Continuouslyvariable valve timing optimizes the engine'sturbocharging system by adjusting valve timing atlower rpm for improved turbo response andgreater torque delivery. Both the intake andexhaust cams have hydraulically operatedvane-type phasers that are managed by asolenoid and directed by the engine controlmodule (ECM). The phasers turn the camshaftrelative to the drive sprocket, allowing intake andexhaust valve timing to be adjusted independently.Cam phasing changes the timing of valveoperation as conditions such as rpm and engineload vary. This provides an outstanding balance ofsmooth torque delivery over a broad rpm range, high specific output and improves fuelconsumption.

• Direct Injection: Direct injection moves the pointwhere fuel feeds into an engine closer to the pointwhere it ignites, enabling greater combustionefficiency. It fosters a more complete burn of thefuel in the air-fuel mixture, and operates at a lowertemperature than conventional port injection. Thisallows the mixture to be leaner (less fuel and moreair), so less fuel is required to produce theequivalent horsepower of a conventional,port-injection fuel system. Direct injection alsodelivers reduced emissions, particularly cold-startemissions, by about 25 percent. The highercompression ratio with direct injection is possiblebecause of a cooling effect as the injected fuelvaporizes in the combustion chamber, whichreduces the charge temperature to lessen thelikelihood of spark knock. The direct injection fuelinjectors have been developed to withstand thegreater heat and pressure inside the combustionchamber, and feature multiple outlets for bestinjection control.

• Cam-Driven High Pressure Fuel Pump: A highpressure, cam-driven fuel pump provides thehigher fuel pressure required by the directinjection system. The engine mounted fuel pumpis augmented by a conventional electricallyoperated supply pump in the fuel tank. The fueldelivery system features a high-pressure stainlesssteel feed line and a pressure regulated fuel railwithout a conventional fuel return line from theengine to the tank. Fuel pressure varies fromabout 750 psi (5,171 kPa) at idle to 2,250 psi(15,513 kPa) at wide open throttle.

• Two Stage Variable Displacement Oil Pump:The variable flow oiling system helps maximizefuel efficiency. Rather than the linear operation ofa conventional fixed flow pump, it is accomplishedwith a crankshaft driven oil pump that matches theoil supply to the engine load. The engine’svariable flow pump changes its capacity based onthe engine’s demand for oil. This prevents usingenergy to pump oil that is not required for properengine operation. An engine oil cooler helps

maintain optimum oil temperatures. It has a heatexchanger incorporated into the oil filter housing.Coolant to the heat exchanger is provided by theengine’s coolant circuit. The design optimizes oilcooling with a minimal pressure loss. During thecold starting, the system also enables fasterheating of the engine oil for an earlier reduction ofinternal engine friction.

• Twin-Scroll Turbocharger: An advanced, electronically controlled turbocharger with aunique twin-scroll design is used to increasepower in the engine. Each of two scrolls on theturbine is fed by a separate exhaust passage, onefrom cylinders one and four, the other fromcylinders two and three and virtually eliminatesturbo lag at low engine speeds, giving the engineimmediate throttle response associated with anaturally aspirated high-performance engine. Theturbocharger generates maximum boost of about20 psi (138 kPa). Because direct injection coolsthe intake process it allows the Ecotec 2.0L turboto safely operate at higher boost and a relativelyhigher compression (9.5:1) than a conventionalturbo engine, increasing both output andefficiency.

• Turbocharger - Air-to-Air Intercooler: An intakecharge air cooler enhances the power increasingbenefits of the turbocharging system. Theair-to-air intercooler draws fresh air through a heatexchanger, much like a radiator, to reduce thetemperature of compressed air that’s forcedthrough the intake system by the turbocharger.Inlet temperature is reduced by as much as 212°F(118°C). Cooler air is denser, which means moreoxygen is packed in the cylinders for optimalcombustion and consequently greater power.

• Cam-Driven Vacuum Pump: A cam-drivenvacuum pump ensures the availability of vacuumunder all conditions, especially under boost, whenthe engine produces the opposite of vacuum. Thepump is mounted at the rear of the cylinder headand is driven by the exhaust camshaft via aflexible coupling.

Both systems come ON automatically whenthe vehicle is started and begins to move. The systemsmay be heard or felt while they are operating or whileperforming diagnostic checks. This is normal and doesnot mean there is a problem with the vehicle.TCS activates if it senses that any of the drive wheelsare spinning or beginning to lose traction. When thishappens, TCS applies the brakes to the spinningwheels and reduces engine power to limit wheel spin.StabiliTrak® activates when the vehicle senses adifference between the intended path and the directionthe vehicle is actually traveling. StabiliTrak® selectivelyapplies braking pressure to any one of the vehiclewheel brakes to assist the driver in keeping the vehicleon the intended path.

Indicator Light Operation

The indicator light for both systems is in the instrumentcluster. This light will:• Flash when TCS is limiting wheel spin.• Flash when StabiliTrak is activated.• Turn ON and stay ON when either system is not

working. If cruise control is being used and traction control orStabiliTrak begins to limit wheel spin, the cruise controlwill disengage. Cruise control may be turned back ONwhen road conditions allow.

Hydra-Matic™ 6T50 6-Speed Automatic Transaxle

Shown is a typical view of the Hydra-Matic™ 6T506-speed front-wheel-drive, electronically controlled, automatic overdrive transaxle with an electronicallycontrolled torque converter clutch and a surgeaccumulator for the start/stop system. This transmission features Gen 3 upgradesimplemented to enhance efficiency. The pump hasbeen moved off-axis, which allows better sealing of thetorque converter, reducing pump flow demands andenhancing fuel economy. Additionally, the pump is nowa binary vane-type, which allows lower powerconsumption during times of lower flow demands and athigher engine speeds.• The transmission case material is made from die

cast aluminum.• Clutch-to-clutch shift operation.• Adaptive shift controls.• IX Gear Pump.• Ground and honed gears.• Stop/start technology supported by a unique oil

storage accumulator.

Torque Converter

The 3-element torque converter contains a pump, aturbine, a stator assembly and a pressure plate splinedto the turbine. The torque converter acts as a fluidcoupling to smoothly transmit power from the engine tothe transmission. It also hydraulically providesadditional torque multiplication when required. Thepressure plate, when applied, provides a mechanicaldirect drive coupling of the engine to the transmission.

Transmission Gear Ratios

The transmission has the following gear ratios:• First: 4.584• Second: 2.964• Third: 1.912• Fourth: 1.446• Fifth: 1.000• Sixth: 0.746• Reverse: 2.940• Final Drive Ratio: 3.230

Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check

The transmission uses DEXRON® VI transmissionfluid. When performing fluid checks, always refer to SIfor the Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Checkprocedure.

Buick Intelligent AWD (Active Twin Clutch)

Notice: When using a compact spare tire on anAWD vehicle, the system automatically detects thecompact spare and reduces AWD performance toprotect the system An AWD message may bedisplayed. To restore full AWD operation andprevent excessive wear on the system, replace thecompact spare with a full-size tire as soon aspossible.Buick Intelligent AWD (Active Twin Clutch) deliversgreater handling, stability and driver confidence bypreemptively and electronically splitting torque betweenthe rear wheels to provide additional control versus a50/50 split in a single clutch system. It provides:• Enhanced traction, stability and performance

during vehicle acceleration and cornering duringdry normal conditions.

• Optimal handling and improved traction in wet/snowy/icy conditions.

• Improved vehicle response when road traction isnot uniform, such as when the right side of thevehicle is on ice and the left side is on drypavement.

• Active Twin Clutch with active torque bias hasincreased capability to add stability across alldriving conditions.

• A fuel economy benefit is realized by not pushingtorque when it is not needed.

Towing the Vehicle— RecreationalVehicle Towing

Towing the Vehicle

DO NOT use a wheel lift tow truck to tow the vehicle.DO NOT dolly tow the vehicle. Only use a flatbed carcarrier. Do not lash or hook to suspension components.Use the proper straps around the tires to secure thevehicle.

Recreational Vehicle Towing — Dinghy Towing

Recreational vehicle towing means towing the vehiclebehind another vehicle, such as behind a motor home.Dinghy towing is towing the vehicle with all four wheelson the ground. To dinghy tow the vehicle from the front, with all fourwheels on the ground, perform the following:

Notice: Use of a shield mounted in front of thevehicle grille could restrict airflow and causedamage to the transmission.1. Position the vehicle to tow and then secure it to the

towing vehicle.2. Turn the ignition ON, and shift the transmission to

N (Neutral).3. With the transmission in N (Neutral), turn the

ignition OFF.4. To prevent the battery from draining while the

vehicle is being towed, remove fuses 29 and 32(Body Control Module) from the instrument panelfuse block. Reinstall the fuses upon reaching thedestination. The instrument panel fuse block is in the glovebox. To access the fuses, open the fuse panel doorfrom the passenger side by pulling it out. Toreinstall the door, insert the tabs on the top of thedoor first, then push the door back into its originallocation.

Front and Rear Tow Eye

The tow eye should not be used to recover a vehiclefrom an off-road situation. The tow eye is stored inthe spare tire compartment area.

To use the tow eye:1. Carefully open the cover by using the small notch

that conceals the front or rear tow eye socket.2. Install the tow eye into the socket by turning it

clockwise until it stops in a horizontal position. When the tow eye is removed, reinstall the coverwith the notch in the original position.

Vehicle Lifting and Jacking

Note: The use of a LOW PROFILE LIFTARMSSYSTEM may be required to avoid unwantedcontact with the vehicle's body and structuredepending on lifting equipment used. Refer to themanufacture's recommendation for theirapplications of low profile lift arms system for theirlifting equipment.

Vehicle Lifting - Frame Contact Lift
