of Assistant Research Officer on the staff of the Council'sRadiophysics Laboratory at the University of Sydney. Appli-cants should have graduated in science with physics andmathematics as major subjects, or in electrical engineering.

The salary range of Assistant Research Officers is from £356per annum increasing by eight annual increments of £18each to £500 per annum ( both nominal),' the first four incre-ments being automatic and the last four at the discretion ofthe Council. The present equivalents of these salaries aftercost -of- living adjustments are £378 and £522 per annum,respectively.

Minors who may be appointed to these positions will bepaid actual salary according to age, that is, at nineteen years£271 per annum, at twenty years £301. per annum. Adultswill be paid a minimum commencing salary of £378 per annum(actual ).

PROMOTIONS -- SECTION 50 AND REGULATION 109.

THEfollowing promotions are provisional and subject to appeal by officers to the Public Service Board, and, where consequent upon

another provisional promotion, shall be dependent upon the latter being confirmed. Appeals should be lodged, either by letter ortelegram, within fourteen days of the date of this notification, as follows :

(a) if the promotion is to be made in a State, with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector in the capital city of that State ;(b) if the promotion is te be made in the Australian Capital Territory, with the Public Service Inspector in Canberra, unless the

promotion is to be made to a vacancy in the Postmaster - General's Department, in which case the officer shall lodge hisappeal with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector, Sydney ;

(e) if the promotion is to be made in the Northern Territory(i) with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector, Brisbane, in the case of a promotion to a vacancy in the Department

of Trade and Customs ;(ii) with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector, Adelaide, in the case of a promotion to a vacancy in the Postmaster -

An appellant shall forward his appeal direct to the Public Service Inspector.Under Section 50 (7A) of the Commonwealth Public Service Act, the Board may regard an appeal as having been made against a

provisional promotion notified hereunder by any officers who, at any time within the time prescribed for lodging an appeal, are absent onleave for war service.

Where an officer desires to appeal against two or more provisional promotions a separate appeal should be lodged in respect of each.except where the pri visional promotions appealed against are to positions of similar classification in the same Branch of a Department, whenone appeal covering such provisional promotions will be accepted.

The grounds of appeal must be as prescribed in Section 50 of the Commonwealth Public Service Act, viz.:- -(a) Superior efficiency ; or(b) Equal efficiency combined with seniority.

PASS CONDITIONS.To pass the examination a candidatemust obtain at least 60 per cent. of the full marks in eachof Sections I., II. and III. of Natural Science, and in eachof Electrical Technology, Radio Technology, and Drawing andDesign, subject to the provisions relating to exemption fromre- examination.

EXEMPTION FROM ExAiuNATI0N: An Assistant RadioInspector who was so designated before 31st December, 1940,and who lias satisfied the requirements in respect of thesubjects of Radio Technology and Drawing and Design willbe exempted in this examination from the subjects of NaturalScience and Electrical Technology.

A candidate who passed in the subject of Natural Scienceat Examination No. 2106, 2194, 2295 or 2377, for promotionas Engineer, Postmaster- General's Department, will be eligiblefor exemption from re- examination therein. It should benoted, however, that the currency of the sectional pass gainedat any of the examinations specified will terminate on theexpiration of five. years commencing on the date of publication of the results of that examination in the CommonwealthGazette, unless the full qualification is acquired in thisexamination (No. 2426) .

A candidate who within the immediately preceding fiveyears has passed in a section or sections of Natural Scienceor in Electrical `technology, Radio Technology, or Drawingand Design, or the accepted equivalent, at the required stan-dard at a recognized university or an approved technicalcollege examination is eligible for exemption from re-examination therein.
